My 3GS doesn't rattle when I shake it either.

It rattles when you tap it on the back next to the camera or if you drop it from one hand to the other from a distance of around 1-2 inches.

I have been able to replicate the rattle with every 3GS I have ever picked up.

Is your iPhone working properly? Yes. Why do people look for problems?

Sounds like my issues is indeed a different problem then.

Because if whatever is rattling causes something to not work on my phone a year a day from the day I bought it I'll be SOL

It's probably the "auto focus" camera. Try "tapping" next to the camera lens to verify if in fact that's the noise your hearing. If it is, then it's normal to hear this. The 3GS also has this sound.

After some discussion in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/955164/ I have been able to rule that out. Going to the Apple store in an hour so We'll see what they think it is.

Just checked & mine rattles, never dropped or anything. I doubt anything is wrong with it, just the way it is.

I dropped my phone twice (wearing a bumper).

My phone doesn't rattle; however, the bumper causes a rattle (even before dropping the phone).

mine rattles too, didn't yesterday, does today. Never been dropped or anything and only a few days old.

It sounds as though its coming from the top of the screen by the camera.

This has been covered in past threads. Some iPhone 4's rattle, some don't. The ones that do, it's not the buttons, maybe it is indeed the camera. But I also know that there are iPhone 4's that don't rattle, because I have shaken them myself :)

Also, I have noticed that when I shake mine up and down the rattle is more pronounced than in other directions. This seems to me to rule out any kind of autofocus mechanism.

I took it to the Apple store today. The genius I got seemed more knowledgable than most and in fact had someone shadowing him, so I assume he was a trainer, lead, or supervisor or something. He dismissed the lens making the noise right away and said that noises in the iP4 more likely can result from a loose speaker grate or vibrator. He took it in the back to hear it more clearly. He came back said he wasn't sure exactly what it was but confirmed it wasn't the lens, speaker, or vibrator. He put a note with the SN about the rattle so if it becomes an issue it will be documented and they will swap it out for me. I was very happy as I actually didn't want to swap it out since everything else works fine, and now if it causes problems in the future I'm covered.

My 3GS does this and (in my case) it's the silent switch that causes the rattling. If I hold it while shacking the phone there's no rattling.

Does your iPhone 4 rattle when you gently shake it?

I hear a slight rattle, like the sound of a loose screw, when I gently shake my iPhone 4. It comes from the speaker end of the phone. Does anyone else hear this?

Lol about an hour ago i noticed my HTC Incredible (dont hate lol) did the same thing. It has a very very slight rattle at the top. My OCD kicked in a little and it has been bothering me. Then i saw this post. So weird lol

I get no rattle at all unless the bumper is on, in which case it's the sleep button on the bumper.

Mine comes from the top right by the hd camera. I only hear it when i set the phone down on that corner.

I have a rattle also, coming from the rear camera. I can only hear it if it is set down on the counter or if I tap the back of the phone with my finger.

I thought maybe mine was bad but I checked 15 phones at my local apple store and everyone of them did it and they all sounded the same.

That's exactly what mine has. Glad I'm not the only one either.

The accelerometer is solid state, the only parts that move within it are microscopic. The 3Gs has the same problem. It's the auto-focus camera's lens moving about.

that was my theory but did not want to sound stupid. I figured the lens has to be able to move foward and back to focus.
