Here's what I think... They get rid of the black box, and release a small HDMI dongle/receiver that picks up AirPlay from your iPad. On the iPad you have a new TV app that has everything and more the old Apple TV had.

The iPad IS the new Apple TV!

That is an awesome idea. Doesn't explain why they'd discontinue the Apple TV 2 though, since not everyone is going to buy an iPad 3 immediately - or ever. They'd miss out on a lot of sales by discontinuing the set-top box.

Then in that case, Apple might as well unveil new Airport Extreme and Time Capsule models with 802.11ac, which should really benefit 1080p streaming in home networks.

Is wifi ac even ready for a mass production like what the iPad would demand.

If this actually came to fruition, I would be elated!

There's no incentive for Apple to turn two revenue streams into a single product. There will be separate ATV3 and iPad 3s

A dongle as the Apple TV wouldn't work. You need at least 4GB of flash storage just to be able to support the cache for streaming any 1080P video and the OS that runs the media GUI.
Also the dongle would need an optical Toslink audio port out for people that use sound systems for the 5.1 audio. There isn't enough saturation of HDTV's with 5.1 speakers to keep the dongle from not having the port.
Also you would need a mini-USB port for servicing.
It could be built into a television set though.

I think we will see the same black puck with the Apple A5 SOC in it.

As far as "true 1080P" video this might not be the case. a two hour video that is 1080P @24fps takes up a good 6-10 GB of data and would require a beefy broadband connection. Apple wants to get this to the average consumer with broadband so I'm going to guess 1080i.

They may offer something along the lines of what Amazon does with HDR or HDX video for a premium price.

Anyone else think the thing "you have to see" on the invite was the apple tv, and to touch is the new iPad?

I was at the genius bar's in both the Trafford Centre & Arndale Manchester stores yesterday and in both of them, the staff were taking off the Apple TV's and re-arranging the other stuff (Magic Mouse etc.) to cover the empty space.

They were also removing a large lot of Lacie Drives... odd

I actually think some part of the new apple tv will be a big surprise

As long as they dont 'accidentally tweak' airplay to stop the new iPad HD working on the current get Apple TV I'll be fine. I know what they are like tho...

No.

"You have to see me" = Retina.
"Touch" = Unknown....too obvious to mean the iPad screen.

I hope the new Apple TV supports either BT High-Speed or at least a basic 802.11 ad hoc mode. So for example one could stream media directly from their iDevice while at a hotel or meeting room.

+1

Combine that with Siri for the new iPad and then you have a voice controlled TV. :)

Wait. Isn't that what the current Apple TV is already?

Your retina screen theory is even more obvious

The Apple TV is a family geared device though, your idea would place a huge dependency on the iPad and create issues for families if the iPad owner was out. It also massively complicates things from a storage perspective since even a 64GB iPad will struggle with too many films.

Besides, the Apple TV is already pretty cheap so I can't see what advantages your proposal would bring to customers? iPad owners might save about $50, everyone else is probably worse off and those same iPad owners need to use their iPad to store content to view it on TV, drastically reducing space for other things. Besides, airplays already an option to the existing hardware.

Apple TV or....

With the possible release of the new Apple TV, imagine that...

Apple TV with stereo airplay enabled (airplay to two or more speakers), controlled from an app on the iphone/ipad...
Apple TV as a gameconsole (Apps), with bluetooth controllers.....
An Airport extreme/time capsule like thing, that works as a itunes directory.. Download & steam your movies (Full HD) to apple tv (and Ipad HD) from the Airport...

bye... xbox/playstation, mediacenters...

and the crazy stuff.. DVB-S & DVB-C in Apple TV.... and Apple relases a 40 inch display..

Now the real question is how quickly we can install XBMC on it.

Yup! Hope it's not long for a jailbreak.

just curious here, but why XBMC instead of PLEX?

Both have their merits.

XBMC is a nice all in one solution that let's you bypass the need for a computer/server doing transcoding and play media directly from a storage location like a NAS.

But Plex is great as well, blends right into the Apple TV UI, and works beautifully on iOS. Great when you're using it on multiple devices.

I think PLEX just added Direct Play as well in the 0.10RC (not that I'm trying to get you to switch but just so you know). It makes it much easier of the MacBook (at least from the lack of fans spinning.)
