Here's what I think... They get rid of the black box, and release a small HDMI dongle/receiver that picks up AirPlay from your iPad. On the iPad you have a new TV app that has everything and more the old Apple TV had.

The iPad IS the new Apple TV!

I never thought of this, but WOW, it makes everything so very simple!

Could Apple TV have Siri installed on it? Could they still do that for $100 puck? Would they need an audio pickup on the remote? Could your iOS device serve as a siri controlled remote for your Apple TV? That really doesn't seem like it should require much programing to accomplish.

I'm hoping for better performance on NBA TV. The picture is much better when I watch that on my computer than when I use the hockey puck. Also there are some pauses with the hockey puck. HD doesn't make much difference to me because my living room projector is only 720p. But I've got a bedroom TV that is 1080p and so there might be some visual improvement there.

If they can keep the price at $100, this stays an impulse level buy and one that I don't mind being on a frequent upgrade path.

Well if it has an A5 I'm taking for granted it will have 512 megs of RAM... Oh wait, you mean more storage... I'm doubting that, since Apple seems to "pass thru" a premium price for their flash storage.

What's the "TC" and why is it loud with a fan and a HDD? And what does that have to do with the Apple TV, clearly the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S don't need fans or hard drives to live happily with their A5 SoCs (and of course they are more cramped than even an Apple TV).

no, I mean more memory (it's not storage in this sense) to buffer high bitrate files. without that memory, high bitrate 1080p won't really work regardless of a CPU bump.

i don't think they're more cramped than an ATV2 and they don't run at 100% for 2 hours on end (and if they do, they get extremely hot in my experience).

On the bright side, 2% of US Apple Retail Stores have Apple TV in stock. :D

I can send you some from Germany, if you want. There are piles of them available in all electronic stores that I visit. Apparently nobody buys that stuff here.

I bet that hdmi dongle will cost $100

I rather have the apple box ,not everybody has an iPad

119€ kinda sucks compared to 99 USD. There's a stack of them in the Frankfurt Apple store.

The #1 new feature I want to see is the ability to d/l apps. This has been a rumor since ATV went iOS so I hope it happens this round. But if there is only one model doesn't look good since I'm sure they can't sell a 16GB ATV for $99.

I'd be very interested an SDK provided for developers. I think you'd see all kinds of cool apps come up, including new and clever co-op apps that utilize ATV and iTouch devices together. And for the few of us that have the ATV and our main computer in the same room, a way to do some controlling of the ATV with our Mac.

There's already leaked talk about Mountain Lion being able to mirror a Mac to ATV over wireless (and I presume Ethernet if it's all wired up). I wonder, however, if it will require this new ATV.

I must be missing something, but why is apple cutting this generation atv? I'm surprised because in their smartphone market, the 3gs, 4, and 4s are all sold alongside each other.

Does that reflect their confidence in the upcoming release, their prowess as they don't want to water down their tv market share with multiple products, or just a minor improvement?

I suppose the fact that this, historically, has been a hobby for apple should also be taken into account...

Your suggestion doesn't make sense. The Apple TV is so cheap already, it wouldn't make sense to offer a cheaper model. Offering cheaper iPhones is Apple's way to compete with Android's cheaper phones. Apple doesn't need to compete in the same way with the Apple TV. Plus, I think this next Apple TV will put the current one in he Dark.

Just ordered 3 Apple TVs for pickup March 9th

As is the case w/ 98% of the stores, my local store in Reston VA shows a March 9th availability for pickup.

I figure why not order now and presumably be higher up the list to pick up the new ATV on Friday? Seems better than waiting for the official announcement, when all the in-store pickup orders will be flooding in.

We'll see if it makes a difference.....

I'm really looking forward to an iPad 3/HD and an Apple TV 3 with full 1080p AirPlay mirroring! This is the only reason I haven't gotten an Apple TV yet. Please don't disappoint on Wednesday.

At 100$ (or 120$ canadian even with the dollar at the same value as the USD), it was a no brainer.

My current aTV will go in the kids room. Who needs 1080p for Spongebob of Netflix?

Even without kids, plug some speakers and it because a little music box for the kitchen, etc.

Are you single? Because otherwise if an iPad, iPhone or iPod becomes a requirement at home for :apple:TV functionality then those mobile devices become immobile devices. You can't take an iDevice that is the new :apple:TV out with you if others at home want to watch some :apple:TV. You can't take the "good remote" that is your iDevice out with you if others at home want to use the :apple:TV.

:apple:TV needs to be it's own self-contained toy with no dependencies on iDevices. Then those with iDevices- single or not- just have bonus functionality. If :apple:TV depends on an iDevice then :apple:TV becomes as asterisks product...

:apple:TV3 Only $99*

*(at least an additional) $199 for an iTouch remote is required if you don't already own an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to dedicate as an :apple:TV remote.

I think this is excellent idea! Thank You! I'm going to order now. I suppose you can always cancel, so there is no risk. I do wonder if there will be different memory configurations with prices such as $99 - $149 - $199

Hey I bought apple tv 2 in dec .. Can I still return it to apple?

Also wtf macrumors? I thought you said apple would just be making a proper television this year and wouldn't bother with apple tv 3 .. Thats why I bought apple tv 2 ..

So the "have to see" is the Apple TV, and "And touch" is the iPad then. I'm sure someone else has already said this.

Too bad, I was hoping for some exciting new feature to justify the "And touch" sentence fragment.

Popular in my house. I have one for every TV. Cut the cord almost 2 years ago.

That sounds cool, unless you have a single tv...

We have two TVs (big ass plasma for the adults and small lcd for the kids). If this Apple TV 3 rumor pans out, then it will be one for each TV. The kids will still use the DVDs until scratched beyond recognition... (I don't want to rip non-Pixar or Dreamwork family DVDs: waste of hard-drive space!).

I have cut the cord in 2004. Came back for 2 years when my wife was on maternity leave, then cut again when we moved 2 years ago. Replaced with an aTV2.

1080p should make a big difference to sales. Running at the native resolution of Full HD TVs should improve the picture. Scaling is never perfect.

There is also the psychological aspect to it for many people. Why buy something that is a lower spec than the TV?

No, you're out of luck. If they had released it a couple of weeks after you'd bought it you might have been able to return it but not after 3 months.

There's a big clue in the name of the web site. A product is only official once Apple has announced it. You can use the information posted on here as a guide to help you with your purchases but MacRumors can't be held responsible if the rumours don't pan out.

Hmm. How about you just sell it.

As soon as there is an Apple TV that can run XBMC @ 1080p, I'm sold. Most sane people use XBMC for their HTPC setup. If you haven't seen it, simply head to XBMC.org and check out the interface on your PC. You'll see why I'm excited.

If I can get XBMC, Siri, and the rest of Apple TV for $99 bones, then all l I have to say is: Holy crap balls Batman.
