Apple should put a current A series chip in there and give it an updated Siri. Also they should allow you to play any iOS or iPad os game that supports controllers regardless if it’s optimized for Apple TV. I can run any iPhone app on my iPad, it’s not a serious problem and it will make the Apple TV much more a potential up-starter in the console market.

dont most TVs have this an app?

Why even sell it even for $99? I saw 50 inch tvs for $200 on Black Friday. I also bought 3 55 inch Hisense tvs with the Apple TV app for $280. Samsungs are not much more expensive than that.

I think the technology is pointless now unless they make it a video game system somehow.

I have 3 of the latest ones because of a cable promo but even when the $150 one came out it was outdated and way way over priced.
Issue is some of those TVs - especially the older smart ones - aren’t fast. Their interfaces are outdated, antiquated and generally laggy. That’s where a streaming device can make up some ground with an end user.

The Apple TV app is already on my LG and is installable on all modern tv’s.

What use does a seperate Apple TV has for modern tv’s?

Televisions have become advertising and tracking machines. You can mitigate this by never connecting your television to the internet and using an Apple TV to connect to your ott services and local media libraries instead of the televisions os

On a side note, I continue to be grateful that the 2013 Apple TV’s still work for mirroring my iPads. I was half-expecting compatibility to have broken down by now. 😛

$99 will be a great price. Possible for Apple to do this and have new features only on a costlier/$129 model. One with camera, if at all released, will be much costlier.

Smart TVs are cheap because they are subsidized by ads and data collection/telemetry. Apple isnt selling your data to subsidize the aTV by contrast.
I have LG OLEDs Smart TVs and what I can tell you from my experience is that the OS is fast, very responsive, and I don’t have the problem of having undesired advertising. Actually the transition from ATV to our LGs was very smooth and seamless.

The current 4K is doing very nicely here. I suppose I could move it to the spare room, to replace a FireTV Stick, if the new model is any good...

But, camera? Why? Luckily the Apple TV sits behind the sound bar and the camera would only see the back of the sound bar, if I didn't cover it up... Putting the camera "in" the Apple TV seems a dopey move, they are usually behind TVs or inside cupboards etc. Having an external camera would be a better option, it could be put somewhere where it makes sense...

They can't be making a penny at $99 with a more powerful chip. It would be insane value.

What about $99 for A18 chip version and $199 for Apple TV Arcade with M3 or even M4?

Mac mini shows you what the price of a little box with M4 inside would cost. The structural differences between Mac Mini and AppleTV are not so great to rationalize that it is the other $300 in your price example.

This hypothetical M-series AppleTV for gaming would have to be close in price to Mac Mini. And then, the big gripe would be "might as well buy Mac Mini for much great functionality"... which happens to be the best path right now to a M4 "AppleTV" device.

The best hope for a gaming or pro AppleTV with M-series chips is for Apple to revive the Front Row app... which was basically the AppleTV UI for Mac. A Front Row 2 for modern Macs would allow those craving a much more powerful AppleTV to get it by buying something between a base M4 Mac Mini and a Mac Studio Ultra or even Mac Pro. Run Front Row 2 on it and there's your gaming AppleTV.

I can't see Apple making a hardware variation of AppleTV "pro" as Apple's pricing would naturally be higher and perhaps the principal gripe now is relative pricing vs. all other little TV boxes priced much less. BUT, I can easily see a Front Row 2 revival to sell more Macs to be used in this way. The AppleTV UI runs on a very close sibling architecture of M-series now. It should be pretty easy to make it a stand alone app for Mac if Apple was willing.

And since they'd probably prefer a Mac profit over the AppleTV profit, their prime motivation is in place too.💰💰💰

I don’t see the need of an Apple TV device anymore. I used to have 2 of them some years ago, so me and my family used to use them every single day when my TVs were just dumb flat screens connected to the cable provider.

Now we have all around the house different smart tvs that already integrate internet capabilities, and already have the most popular streaming platforms/apps (Netflix, Prime, NFL, Disney and many, many more), even we have Apple TV+ already installed in them.

So honestly, to me I don’t see what for I would need to have a separate device to do what already my TVs do.
Hand your remote to your wife and tell her to turn on paramount plus which you get for free with deals. Then switch to Netflix with your fifty button Sony Lg Samsung remote. If she doesn’t spike that remote in your eye because of course these smart tv UI are crap and aren’t wife approved, you will get a gentle loving FU. That’s why there’s simple and fast Apple TV. All women hate smart tv remotes.

She doesn’t have any problem using the remote. I don’t know how well or not work another brands, the true is that with our LG smart TVs we are more than ok 3 years ago since we bought them, and as I said before, we haven’t missed our ATVs at all. In the contrary, using the streaming capabilities of ours LGs is much better because we only have to use the same remote of the TVs and we don’t have to use a second one (the one of the ATV).

Among other things LG scans for all network devices and reports back to LG. They also report detailed viewing data, app usage, various edge metrics, user information, etc. That’s all monetized and sold to various data brokers including adtech companies, ISPs, the ad arms of social media companies, etc. You may not see ads directly on the TV but the data is tied to you and used to target ads on other platforms.

Taking the ethernet port off of the Apple TV is disgusting.
While I agree I’d be curious what metrics Apple has for that decision, it didnt come from a vacuum. I would absolutely be willing to bet that most AppleTV users only use wifi. I wire mine, all of them, but most folks dont run cables for pretty much anything these days, wifi for everything. Most cheaper streaming sticks dont include ethernet either, it’s where the market is.

That means Apple can sell a cheaper model that appeals to most folks and upsell to those who want the port.

It’s annoying, but it makes sense from a business perspective, and I’m honestly just happy they have a model that still has ethernet at all - and the difference in price isnt huge enough to bug me

It’s funny the Apple TV when it launched was unique because no TVs were smart and they gave it smart capabilities now almost every TV off the shelf has Apple TV and airplay built into it so there’s no need for an Apple TV anymore unless you need ultra high-performance to run specific apps on the Apple TV. It’s become a niche product once again. It started out as a niche product and it will die as a niche product.
Even if it has super low sales, and I’m not convinced that it does honestly, they’ve been popular as gifts this Christmas I know (hell, I bought one for my in-laws because they wanted one after using mine) it’ll stick around as long as Apple is still pitching a privacy focused ecosystem that integrates will all your other gear seamlessly. I dont see it dying anytime soon personally

The cheaper sticks that don't include Ethernet sell for like $20. The Apple TV is $100 more than that. There's no good excuse.

You could see the value in a privacy led marketing approach for Apple TV, could be the same for certain HomeKit applications such as door bells and cctv cameras too.

No adverts, more privacy. Will apple decide they have a case with their profit margin requirements though?

A18 (even if binned or downclocked) would be the ideal cpu for apple intelligence on a device that could be used as a HomeKit hub.

Even A17 pro would be usable.

Price cuts could be supported by cheaper ram and storage forecast for next couple of years.

IMO it makes way more sense for Apple to reduce the current Apple TV 4K to $99 (maybe even a redesigned Apple TV 4K "slim") while introducing a new Apple TV that is more expensive and has additional features.

What additional features are needed to stream video?

Even at $99, it's triple the price of the Chromecast, and every TV has all the streaming apps built in now, what's the point of chasing this low margin market in 2025?

Exactly why I am surprised that Apple would want to continue to compete in this space. Nobody is buying apps for tvOS so there is no revenue generated by it, especially since Apple has released their TV app for most other smart TV platforms at this point.

It better include an ethernet port

A $99 Apple TV doesn’t interest me as it will certainly not have an Ethernet port. I am currently using a 4K streamer device (replaced Apple TV HD) that came with my Internet service after getting a 4K TV this fall.

I decided to hold off getting the Apple TV 4K as I figured a new version was coming soon. Ethernet is a must for me as Wifi is not always reliable where I have the device. This will be an automatic buy once the new Apple TV is announced
