I think there were a fair amount of "Rev A" issues (as there were with the Rev A MacBook Air in 2008 and the original MacBook Pro and MacBook in 2006), but the "reporting" seemed a bit over the top. I'm perfectly happy with my 13" rMBP. It was manufactured in October 2012, and the fan is whisper quiet, the screen is excellent, and I haven't noticed the kinds of bugs people are reporting on the forums. I'm sure they are real, but I don't think this is nearly as widespread as you might think from reading the article.

Anyway, Apple apparently made some under-the-hood changes to the 2013 models, so they likely identified the source of some of the bugs.
Apple changed IO, SSDs, bottom cases and logic boards in 2013. SMC and SSD bugs are fixed through software.Unless ghosting was caused by the SSD and bottom case...

They also introduced a new LG screen but those have problems too.

Basically we have to wait for a real update later this year for some poblem solving to occur.

I personally feel that the article has blown things way out of proportion, it will undoubtedly get the attention of the public i guess.

"Apple’s 13-inch Retina model isn’t free from the issues, with reports of the same image retention issues, fan speed, and more"

Can anyone enlighten me regarding this quote, I wasn't aware the 13 inch suffered these problems, and what is meant by more?

"More" is for drama and the 13" does not have fan issues. Any of those (15") were fixed in the recent SMC update. IR is a valid complaint but not as widespread as they claim.

Not lying but naive. Discussion forums by their very nature have a disproportionate number of problem threads no matter what the topic.

I think this issue is amplified by the price more than anything. They're not cheap, so for $2,200 to $3,800, I think people expect them to be pretty much problem free. I know I would.

I got the early 2013 15" rMBP. I got a Samsung Screen and SSD. I have had no IR issues. It is my first MBP and it seems like every so far is ok. I got Apple care just in case. I can sympathize with those who forked over a lot of their hard earned money and expect a product to work perfectly with out any problems.

The rMBPs are not the only ones that have issues! My brother bought a mid 2010 15" MBP, it had its logic board fail 3 times. The third time the Genius Bar quite rightly said it would not repair the unit and would have to order a new late 2012 MBP for him. So he ended up getting a brand new replacement. I call that excellent customer service. So Apple needs to step quality control and deal with its dissatisfied customers.

Are there any 13" screens with image retention problems?

Is there anyway to find out if it's LG or Samsung on a 13"?

There are definitely IR problems on the 13", but unfortunately Apple has disabled the terminal command to find out the brand of the screen for the 13"ers. You still can for the 15" though.

Yes they do. Also, from other threads I've found, there's a new LG panel on the 2013 models.

Not in every 2013. I just got a 15" two weeks ago (after the small spec bump refresh) and it has the same first-gen LG panel- SJA-1. Not the new SJA-2. Guess what? I had zero ghosting for the first 10 days and now I have it. Going back tonight and hoping for a Samsung...

Good luck.

Unfortunately (for Apple) there is now legitimate competition for the the ultra-premium laptop in the form of the Samsung Chronos 7 laptop. I just spent a half-hour at the local Best Buy using one. It has a very similar shape and size to the rMBP 15, impressive build quality, and other than a lack of SSD it is a more powerful laptop than the Mac. Of course, no Retina display either, but it does have a stunning Samsung display and in day-to-day usage I can't really say I can tell much of a different with the Retina display unless I'm pixel-peeping - in which case I'm going to be using my 27" Apple Cinema Display anyway.

Oh yeah. And it's $1200. As an OSX user I am a little miffed that I need to pay a $1000 tax. We're not comparing MBPs to old giant plastic Dell laptops any longer....the Windows guys are catching up fast and Apple releases a super-buggy rMBP? Tim Cook needs to wake up and smell the coffee.
