It occurred to me as I scrolled through all the posts expressing excitement or dismay about a possible 5.5" iPhone; that I would prefer a 5.5" iPod to compliment my existing iPhone.

I personally don't need a phablet. I prefer a smaller footprint on my phone. However I do read a lot on my iPhone (comics, iBooks/kindle, Newstand) and while it is functional, a slightly larger screen would be convenient. And an iPod touch would be less expensive but just as functional as an iPad. In addition, it would be unnecessary to upgrade a line on my wireless plan.

I dunno. Just sort of thinking out loud.

I would like that too but it may draw customers away from an iPad mini. I would love to add cellular to the iPod Touch

It wont be able to make calls just use 3G, like a cellular iPad mini

I hate to go all Jim Dalrymple on this, but...

Nope.

Apple will never add anything in between iPod touch and iPhone, because that would cannibalize iPhone sales and quite likely kill a good chunk of their profits in doing so.

That is never going to happen.

Agreed. I think if Apple does introduce 2 sizes of the iPhone (4.7, 5.5) then the iPod touch will only get the smaller size.

Adding cellular data seems redundant to me. That's why I have an iPhone after all.

I wasn't suggesting a 5.5" iPod touch as a replacement for the iPhone. But as a compliment to the iPhone. A less expensive option to the iPhone/iPad combo.

No it isn't. It would be closer to a small cellular iPad than to an iPhone. It still wouldn't be able to make phone calls without internet access.

That doesn't make sense... At that point, it's just software restrictions keeping it from calling- so, there would be no point in price difference

Reason why Touch is behind in spec 2 years from Iphone is so that people would still buy Iphone.

U can expect an A6 Ipod touch upgrade but i dont think 5.5 touch will happen. It would kill Ipad mini's already declining sales. Apple is quite a mess lately because their pricing strategy is messed up. Only Iphone stablize throughout the year. Ipad 4 is replacing the 2 at the 2 price, Ipod touch released ridiculous 229/ 16gb no back camera and squash it after like 3 months for a cheaper 16gb with camera????

I only bought a touch because of its incredible cuteness. Bigger is less cute. I'd only ever buy another touch if it was smaller, thinner, faster, had more storage, or lighter. And I'll buy another iPhone when it's the size of the current Touch with better specs than the 5s.

So you can buy an iPad with cellular, jailbreak it and then use it as a phone. I'm pretty sure that's impossible. Don't you have to buy a data sim for the iPad?

I don't think Apple would care if you bought an iPod Touch instead of an iPad mini... especially if they price it at $299. Also, adding cellular to the iPod touch literally gives you an iPhone without an earpiece...

It's all starting to blur isn't it? But for good reason: it's all just bits and bytes and data. Big Phone doesn't want us to figure that out.

You don't even need to JB it. My daughter often uses her (cellular) iPad mini for phone calls. Just received one from her tonight, to my land line. The app TextNow allows that.

I have the same app on both my iPad and iPod Touch, but just haven't used it because I carry a prepaid cell phone. She doesn't.

The iPad could technically make calls, but as it's a whole different form factor- that's a whole other issue...

But you have to pay for credit on a service like textnow right? And it sends it over cellular network. So you have to pay for two services?
