I'd love to see Apple offer this line up:

Iphone 6
Iphone 6 plus
iPod Touch 6 (4.7")
iPod Touch 6 (5.5")
IPad mini
IPad Air
Ipad Pro (the rumored 12" laptop/ipad hybrid)

Yup. That would pretty much cover things. :)

Personally I don't have an iphone. I travel a lot and hate contracts. I currently have an iPad mini with AT&T unlimited data plan that I'm grandfathered in on. I also have an iPod touch 5th gen that I use as my camera to shoot pics for my travel blog. I make & receive calls on my iPad mini all the time using my google # or other apps like txt now etc. I don't hold it up to my ear lol...but it works fine. I can also use my iPod touch to make calls when near wifi.

I would love a larger iPod touch with cellular. Then I could ditch the iPad mini and just carry one device when travelling. They could call it the ipad nano. Ha. Ha.

I was thinking about buying an unlocked 5.5" iphone 6 without a SIM card...and just putting my iPad mini AT&T unlimited data SIM card in it for data only...but I don't think that'd work.

At the very least however, I hope the iPod touch 6 comes with a better 8mp camera on par with the iphone, cause I mainly use my iPod touch as my travel camera now.

I'm in the precise same boat regarding all your points above. I'm waiting an unlocked T-Mobile iPhone 6+ to arrive, then will experiment with swapping in my unlimited AT&T iPad SIM. Further thoughts on this subject:

i think apple messages app rules, but i can't send txts to some bozos near me who refuse to buy apple. if only the apple messages app came with a number for those people who text that way

Then it would be an iPhone.

I love the apple eco system. My one beef is that all this cool stuff only works apple to apple. I have family and friends that just can't afford to use all plle devices. If there were something like an android app that could send a txt or face time call to an apple id it would be awesome.

It would probably push more people to apple products, but as it stands now people have to make a choice; cool apple features or cheaper android devices that won't work within the apple eco system.

There are many of these in the App Store. Maybe you should look.

I'm assuming that the iPod Touch will become obsolete. It seems so because once I hopped on the apple bandwagon, the iPhone and Touch were updated and released side by side. I' thought the same would happen here but it didn't. AND I noticed that with the iPhone they jumped from 16gb straight to 64 and created a 128gb phone for the first time.

I would like to see a 5.5 Touch created, although at this point, I wouldn't get it. With my "phablet" I am elated. I leave my iPad mini at home now and now, I can enjoy my games and movies. What I'd like to see now are more magazine apps for the 6 plus. The display would look great, now!

The iPod Touch won't become obsolete. That is ridiculous. Not EVERYONE wants an iphone. The iPod touch will be updated. It wasn't updated with the iphone 6 as usual, because Apple didn't want anything to take away from the iphone & iwatch announcements.

Mark my words, the iPod touch will be updated. Most likely in October alongside the new iPads. In fact, I think that is how Apple plans to market the future iPod touch...as a sort of ipad nano. It may even come in 4.7" & 5.5" sizes.

The iPod touch is very much still relevant. There is a market for it. It's evolving. It's not just for music anymore. Its for gaming, Web browsing, emailing, taking pics, watching movies...and yes, even making calls with. No, it's not a phone. It could be a gateway to the iphone for some. But for others, it is a phone replacement. I use my iPod touch 5th gen for making calls all the time!

I believe Apple will make the iPod touch 6 slightly larger, with a better chip and camera. I'd be shocked if they gave it cellular capabilities...but if Apple markets it as an ipad nano...it just may well get one.

We shall see soon enough. The iPod touch update is coming.

Regardless of whatever Unicorny devices people are wishing here, in all probability we might not get an iPod Touch upgrade this year or for all it matters the following year and so on.
We would be very lucky if Apple releases the iPod Touch The VI at all. And if they do, its highly likely, from a purely business point of view for Apple to release a 4.7" device, with no Cellular option, it's getting the Motion Coprocessor though, very very likely.

Seriously nobody needs a 5.5" iPod Touch. If you want a bigger display, buy an iPad Mini. This would be perfect for you.

The iPhone 6 Plus is nowhere near the same size as the iPad mini. The two are not in the same universe.

The iPad mini is much closer in size to the full-sized iPad Air than it is to the 6 Plus.

Honestly, wouldn't it be better to simply use iPad(or mini if you don't like the full size tablet)? For content consumption, the bigger the better.

A 5.5" iPod sounds ridiculous. For media and games, the iPad is more suited, for running and sports the itouch and smaller is perfect. A 5.5" iTouch would be a middle ground suited for a a very select few.

The only iPod Touch announcement will be the availability of a 128GB model. You heard it here first. ;)

If it does get updated...it'll get more than that. It'll at least get a chip upgrade. Aint no way Apple would update a new iOS device and leave the A5 chip in there that probably won't be able to run iOS 9 next yr.

For running you've got the iPod nano & shuffle. Makes no sense to run with an iPod touch even. But a 5.5" iPod touch does make more sense. More portable than a ipad min and big enough to play games on. Perfect size actually. The iPod touch is less of a music device now.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I don't think a 5.5" iPod Touch would happen. There's a price curve that's U shaped. You get tech big enough and it's more expensive, somewhere in between it gets slightly cheaper, and then when it's small it gets expensive again. Take, for instance, the lineup from last year: the iPad Air (A7) at $499, the iPad Mini (A7) at $399, and the iPhone 5S (A7) at $649. To get something similar to the iPhone 6 Plus (A8) at $749, even if you cheap out on stuff and don't have celluar radio, NFC chip, etc, it still is really hard to get the price down to a level where people would buy it. Maybe an A7 with a cheaper screen, no Touch ID, N wireless, less advanced battery, etc could get down to $399 with a slimmer margin, but it would be tough and I doubt they even mess with it.

I don't think they would do a 5.5 inch touch because the price would either be the same or more than the iPad mini. A 4.7 inch touch would be perfect although I am happy with the form factor of the touch 5.

After testing an iPhone 6 today, i think 4.7" would be useful and pratical. 5.5" is very huge.

I checked out the iphone 6plus today too. It is big. And the curved edges make it very slippery for one handed use(I dropped it on the table twice). But I don't think its too big. Especially for a portable gaming/web surfing device.

I could see either a 4.7" or 5.5" iPod touch selling well.

Nobody knows but Apple. Guess we will find out soon enough.

It occurred to me as I scrolled through all the posts expressing excitement or dismay about a possible 5.5" iPhone; that I would prefer a 5.5" iPod to compliment my existing iPhone.

I personally don't need a phablet. I prefer a smaller footprint on my phone. However I do read a lot on my iPhone (comics, iBooks/kindle, Newstand) and while it is functional, a slightly larger screen would be convenient. And an iPod touch would be less expensive but just as functional as an iPad. In addition, it would be unnecessary to upgrade a line on my wireless plan.

I dunno. Just sort of thinking out loud.

I agree! I have a 5s and I have NO intention of upgrading to a 6+. If they make a 5.5 inch touch that costs less than an iPad, Ill probably get one to go with my iPhone :D Just something for media consumption :)

I would imagine that if they were to do a 5.5" non-iPhone iOS device, that they'd made it a product in the iPad line rather than the iPod line. Line it up so that it becomes the iPad nano and making the line-up look like this:

5.5" iPad nano
7.9" iPad mini
9.7" iPad Air
12.9" iPad Pro

I could see the iPod touch, if (in the unlikely event that) it's updated, gaining the 4.7" screen. But somehow the 5.5" one, especially with the iPad-like software tweaks that set it apart from the 4.7 and smaller iOS devices, seems more apt for the iPad family than the iPod family (especially when the latter has always prided itself on being small).

Well, we finally got our iPod Touch update and it looks like we'll have to keep holding out hope for that 5.5" screen.

To me, it's not as much about it being less expensive, although that's a bonus, as it is about having something I can palm in my hand. To me, the point of a secondary iOS device is to relax and be comfortable while consuming. The difference in comfort between using a device that you can palm (a 5.5" device) and one you can't (an iPad Mini, at least not comfortably) is night and day. I tried a Mini for a couple weeks and couldn't stand it because of this. It was just too big to palm. Had to return it. To me, a smaller screen would be well worth the sacrifice, because it hits a better balance of relaxation vs. screen real estate. Plus you can't stuff an iPad Mini in your pocket. Being able to pocket something is a huge portability advantage that the Mini doesn't hit.

And not everyone wants or can get a 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus phablet. Personally I have a 5s and I have no intention of ever going bigger. To me, a phone and this device have very different purposes.

I see a 5.5" iPod Touch working for three groups of people:
- Those (like me) who love their small iPhones and want a secondary large as possible handheld/pocketable iOS device.
- Those who don't have an iPhone and want a large as possible handheld/pocketable iOS device. Think elementary/pre-teens who don't yet have a phone but want a good-sized gaming/communication device that they can stick in their pockets for portability. Or think Android or non-smartphone users who also want a large handheld/pocketable iOS device.
- Young kids (toddlers). A lot of parents use their iPad Mini or even their iPhone to entertain/educate their toddler. But parents need their phones, and iPad Minis are unwieldily for small toddlers to use on their own. A 5.5" iPod Touch (in a good protective case) would be perfect for them to go at it on their own.

Not to mention it would be slightly cheaper than the iPad line.

This article writer is in the same boat (although the article is old):
http://www.imore.com/bigger-ipod-touch-engineered-even-more-funness

So buy the phone but don't buy a contract.

New they are so much more expensive! So I'm considering buying a used iPhone 6 Plus to act as a big iPod Touch, but used is so much less fun and so much more worrisome than new...

If they just took the existing iPodTouch5 and bumped it to A8, 1gig RAM, and 128GB but left everything else the same, especially the form factor, I'd be pretty happy and buy one. I have about zero interest in moving from my 5s to a iPhone 6(+), and the aWatch repulses me, yuck.

You got your wish! And I agree with you about iPhone 6(+) and aWatch.
