Hey! You guys are missing the point of this post. I'm angry because of Apple's low brow tactics to take people past their 30 day return period. You guys keep harping on the "return your phone now" angle. No, I was waiting to see if Apple's patch would make a difference BEFORE returning the phone.

This Beta clarifies the fact that they never intended to put out patch before the 30 day return period was over. Just like the original iphone, they have screwed the early adopters again.

hey, I DON'T LIKE GETTING SCREWED!

You still fail at reading. Apple's press release stated that the patch wouldn't help anything. It was only ever going to change the picture of the number of bars displayed. If a call dropped before, it will still drop now.

There's this thing in software development that we refer to as testing and quality assurance. It's generally done to try to releasing buggy software. A beta release is often part of this.

I'm 100% certain the engineers would love to release an update as soon as possible to take off as much heat as they can, but you don't release it before you're confident in the quality. All part of sdlc, not some underhanded conspiracy.

And in any case, theres no promise this fixes your issue. For that I guess you're back to "live with it or return it."

What's up with all the reading comprehension posts? The issue at the time of Apple's statement was the DEATH GRIP. Yes Apple's statement was about fixing signal bars, but their implication was that this would alleviate the reception issues.

How the hell do you start talking about ORANGES when our entire conversation was about APPLES? Like I said before, no one was complaining about their signals being overstated, Apple came out the blue with that.

You guys keep quoting that misleading Apple statement like it's gospel, to Apple **** about signal bar overstatement and FOCUS on the real problems with your iphone 4.

Clearly everyone failed in their school comprehension exams. No 'fix' was ever promised.
Did they fail their comprehension exams? Or did their attention-spans fall short of what is needed to be seen as a competent human being presented with instructions/information?

Admittedly similar effects, but different root causes.

I think you're missing an "avoid" somewhere in that bolded sentence :p

Excuse me, but I didn't join this forum to get personal with you guys so keep the personal attacks to yourselves. I joined to discuss issues with my iphone.

THANK YOU.

I did that in a 90 page thread two weeks ago. I'm not searching for it.

Now that I’m home, I’ll do it (my bolds):

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see. MY NOTE: Pretty much what the beta is showing us so far.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused. MY NOTE: In other words, we’re doing nothing for you.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. MY NOTE: Pretty much telling those with problems that if it wasn’t clear above, Apple doesn’t care.

We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Apple

I hope it’s all clear now. I could’ve removed some bolding, maybe, but didn’t want someone to miss an important point. Bottom line: bar fix, so you know your actual bars, and nothing else. People with phones that work your bars will be less strong; people with phones that don’t work, Apple doesn’t care (i.e., hold it differently, get a case or bumper, or just return it….that seems to be Apple’s message, not mine).

Thank You Aggie, finally someone who ACTUALLY saw that release for what it really was. These guys keep telling ME I didn't comprehend the statement. I don't give a darn what my signal bars look like, let's FOCUS on the real issues.

Is there any way to take the above post and staple it to all new members foreheads through their computer screen? I know I'm fairly new, joined around iPad launch time, but am tired of the senseless Apple bashing. They made a silly mistake, ooops, bad things happen sometimes. I'd say they are offering any and everyone the opportunity to remedy their situation with a case or by returning the phone.

We aren't far off from these kids in here, saying how they hope the antenna issue gives Steve Jobs cancer. Come on folks, it really is just a phone. There will be a brand new one with updated features in a year. And we'll be lining up to buy it. Not to mention we might have 4G service from AT&T, Apple might get after them and force them to be a better company to keep iPhone exclusivity, better camera, no antenna issues, etc, speculation, etc.

A minor issue with your iPhone 4 is really, severely trivial. Try living in a country that isn't one of the 15 wealthiest in the world, where iPhones are an unthought luxury. Honestly, screaming and crying about your iPhone's reception, just because you won't even try to work around the issue, is one of the most arrogant, conceded, spoiled things you can do. No wonder most of the world hates and pities our country.

edit: The post above Dell's that is. I don't think any of us have trouble reading english Dell, I had/have zero confusion about what Apple will do to remedy the situation. (NOTHING). Still rapturously enamored with my iPhone and it's reception. My case is tough and sexy, and my screen protector's are crystal clear and durable. Ohh look at all my iPhone 4 taboo's, hope someone doesn't accost me in the streets for obscuring my "stunning piece of engineering", guess my phone will just last longer and work better than all the stubborn folks.

it seems that you're still hoping for the antena issue to be resolve and as we all know, it can't be fix by a patch or software fix. On Aggie's post, not at any part they are saying to fix the antena issue. They just basically admitted that there's an antena issue, but they found something else which is the BAR isnt calculating right for the right signal. So they are saying. F the antena issue and will lure all of us by fixing the Bars.

Make sense now?
