I agree, it does seem very tight! However, if they announce it in France at the end of September with a "In stores next week" headline it would certainly generate quite a frenzy. I reckon there's enough awareness about this product from the US launch to minimise the need for a long lead time.

Here's hoping!

God I hope so! Is there an event scheduled in France at the end of September?

I just want an announcement, and I want it soon!

I don't mind the 24 month lock-down, so long as if the 2G iPhone comes out after a year and is significantly better than its predecessor, I can buy that iPhone and keep going with my contract, rather than having to start a brand new one.

As with the Paris Expo, it does seem perfect, I went on their website and Orange (One of the European networks) will be there on the 25th. Does anyone know if Steve will be giving a keynote as there is no info on the website.

Cheers.

Also has anyone seen this?

Yeah, but it's all good and well getting it unlocked, but I want to be the first person to lay my hands on my device, if they sold the software then great, but I wouldn't pay $800 for it to be fondled and used before it even got to me.

I would question where they have access to a software unlock!

If you look at the Hackint0sh.org forum you will see a large number of people about to turn into an angry pitchfork wielding mob at the lack of software update.

I am one of them!! My iPhone is sitting in front of me looking very pretty. Will be even nicer when it works as a phone!

When is this upgrade going to happen? As it will be good for my Blackberry.

U seems clear to me that the 8gb iPhone will be £269.

if you look at the price off off the 16GB iPod Touch in the USA; $399 and £269.
And then look at the 8GB iPhone that is also $399.

For the iPod touch 399 translates to £269.

I think you're right. The 8Gb iPhone is the same price as the 16Gb iPod Touch in the States - there's no reason to think it will be any different in the UK, giving a price of £269 for the UK iPhone.

My guess is the contract will be a minimum of £35/month for 18 or maybe 24 months.

If it's £269 AND £35 p/m sounds a bit outragious to me.. I'd say £30 P/M tops

I hope you're right, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Apple are going to want to include unlimited data in their tariff, so it's going to be tough to get the price down. Looking at O2's current 24 month contracts, £30 per month gets you 600 minutes and 1000 texts, but it includes only 1Mb of data.

If Apple can convince O2 to include unlimited data for £30 (and maybe reduce the number of minutes to 450 to match the cheapest rate in the US), then that would be a pretty good deal. I think £35 per month is more realistic, but Apple can achieve amazing things, so let's keep our fingers crossed!

But that £30 is also subsidising the cost of the handset over the time of the contract. With no subsidy, the monthly charge for calls should be lower - the £15 Simplicity tariff plus a data charge (£15 to £20 a month) would be more reasonable.

There's no way I'm buying an unsubsidised handset and then paying a 'subsidising' tariff. I'd rather have a free 'fashion' phone and the iPod Touch.

Good point, although there is still some element of subsidy - it's rumoured that the network could be paying up to 10% of the monthly tariff to Apple.

There is an O2 "Simplicity" tariff for £20 per month giving 400 minutes (just 50 minutes short of the lowest US iPhone tariff). T-Mobile appears to be able to supply an "unlimited" data tariff for £7.50 per month (although it seems to be actually limited to 10Gb in practise).

If O2 can provide a similar data tariff, and you allow a few pounds for Apple's cut of the tariff, maybe they'll be able to manage a £30 per month tariff. I hope this is the case, but my bet stays on £35 per month. I'm trying not to set myself up for disappointment :D

Don't forget the iPhone price in the US probably includes some subsidy. Depending on O2's deal with Apple it could be a little less or even more (250-300).

I'd say £35 is the minimum the contract over 24 months will cost. More likely £40.

I think a bluetooth Touch with a camera style HSDPA phone (K850i, N95) to tether to is the ultimate setup. However that BT-enabled Touch is unlikely in the near term. Which is a massive shame (maybe possible for N95 with wi-fi tethering?).

In the UK only T-Mobile seem to have a decent tether capable data rate at £12.50, T-Mobile network coverage for 3G isn't as good as, say, O2 or Vodafone. Even at cheap rate a decent contract package is £37.50.
