I also think many are forgetting about the home button. Making a 10.5 with even thinner bezels would push out the home button and I highly doubt Apple is going to do the whole under screen home button and steal potential thunder away from the iPhone later this year. So the home button will likely remain and be the new buttonless style in the iPhone 7.

Either way it makes the most sense that the 10.5 iPad ( if it happens) will be a slightly larger form factor overall. Bigger screen needs a bigger battery, etc. Especially if it will be a higher resolution 326 ppi screen.

I hope the 9,7 ipad pro drops in price and replaces the Air 2.
I just bought my 9.7 pro for 450 with the target sale, only 50 above the air 2 price. I do not think that the new low end model will have a Smart Connector or Pencil abilities.

:::snip::: Why would anyone be convinced to switch from a 9.7 to a 10.5"? Thats 0.8". When it comes to a smaller phone screen thats a lot....but an iPad? Just doesn't seem right.
Getting back to this particular question... It's usually not about getting people to switch. Most people don't retire their gear before it's lived out its usefulness. For someone ready to replace an older iPad, they'll take whichever size is available and makes sense for their needs.

I agree, the difference in size alone may not convince someone with a year-old iPad to trade up, but I don't think that would be one of Apple's primary marketing considerations. They're more concerned about getting the people with 3- and 4-year-old iPads to trade up.

There's the question of whether the 9.7" and 10.5" display sizes might both be available; say an Air at 9.7" and a Pro at 10.5". If they are, then I think the outer dimensions become the key factor. If they have the same outer dimensions, then "more screen in the same size package" becomes a selling point.

The in between size is actually perfect because people can get the portability of the 9.7 with the same screen resolution of the 12.9, albeit in a smaller screen.

Some 12.9 users think their iPad is too heavy
Some 9.7 Pro users think their iPad is Too small for a pro device.
The fact that you can get two full sized iPad apps on a 10.5 in split screen is a difference maker.

MacRumors seems to assess that the Pro models will still be 9.7 and 12.9 inches and the new 10.x model will not have the Pro moniker. I don't agree but it's an interesting theory.

Okay this has officially been said too many times here. How does an awesome new tablet detract from the upcoming awesome new phone?

It's not hard to see if you think about it. A fantastic new design or feature that gets everyone excited will be old news 6 months later. And since iPhones sell considerably more units and generate more profit than iPads, that's where they are going to want their shock and awe. When's the last time that a new feature debuted on an iPad before the iPhone, except where it's something that relies on the larger form factors, like splitscreen multitasking.

They want the initial hype to be for the iPhone. I, however, doubt the 10.5 screen will be edgeless. That won't be until 2018 IMHO.

The 12.9" iPad Pro screen has a horizontal length which is the same as the vertical length of the 9.7" iPads. This is also reflected in the resolution (2048x2732).

The 10.5" iPad Pro screen will have a horizontal length that is equal to the vertical length of the 7.9" iPad (mini).
This will allow it to have the same resolution as the larger iPad Pro while having the pixel density of an iPad mini (326ppi vs 264ppi). I have been saying this since the rumors began in August but only became apparent to a lot of people when an article was written about it.

The new 9.7" model will be a replacement for the iPad Air 2 and will become a low cost 9.7" model and if they update the mini then it'll have similar specs to this (that could happen in Q4). The final lineup with be a small iPad, a large iPad, a small iPad Pro, and a large iPad Pro.
It's possible that in the future, if they reduce the bezels on the 9.7", it could act as the replacement for both iPad mini and (9.7") iPads as they did with the 12" MacBook.

I don't think they're bumping the Pro 9.7 down to the low-cost model. That's just going to piss people off.

I don't mean the 9.7" Pro, I mean the rumored new 9.7" iPad which will act as the iPad Air 2 replacement. Apple have discontinued models with the next refresh in the past, and this could be the case with the 9.7" Pro. But the successor to the 9.7" is the 10.5" Pro.

That's exactly what they are doing and why would that piss people off?
People that paid 600+ for a device with a Pro moniker and then they find out it's now 400 dollars and is not a "Pro."

I can't think of one instance Apple did anything like this - it doesn't seem like them.

Doubtful. The iPad Pro is too expensive for education. They will make a cheaper, 3rd air, or risk completely losing the education market to chrome books.
I agree. I'm doubtful about it even having a smart connector. Think about the #1 difference between the air line and the Pro line - the ability to use Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. I simply do not see them blurring the lines between the lower end and the high-end.

I am guessing Apple see 8in tablet like Mini is dead and Apple give you 3 different size of your choice. Apple hate to sell 2 tablets.

Hmmm...guess you didn't read the latest iPad rumors on here yet?

Looks more and more like we're getting two iPad Pro's focused on split screen multitasking, and two iPad Pro's for portability.
  • 12.9" & 10.5" iPad Pro @2048x1536, A10X, SC, True-tone, AP2, SK2, Camera, 4 Speakers, Form factor redesign
  • 9.7" & 7.9" iPad Pro @1536x1024, A10X & A10, SC, True-tone, AP2, SK1 & No SK, Camera, 4 Speakers
  • 9.7" & 7.9" iPad/mini @1536x1024, A9X, A9, Tru-tone

The only thing that I'm wondering is which one will be the flagship device? Will it still be the 12.9" as it will probably be the most expensive (like it currently is) or will it be the 10.5" with the bezel less design and no home button? It will be interesting to see what Apple does.

The other thing is what other features will it have, they need to give people a reason to upgrade. For example I have the 12.9" iPad Pro at the moment, if all Apple are going to do is add the true tone display, a better processor and upgrade the camera, it's going to be difficult to justify the upgrade to the iPad Pro 2, even tho I would love to get a 256GB iPad Pro.

No I read news somewhere Apple is thinking about dropping Mini and 9.7 is replacing Mini. We will wait and see at Apple event next month.

I would be sad if that were the case since that would mean the iPad "mini" would then be at least a half inch wider (in portrait orientation). I already wish the current iPad mini was slightly smaller so that I could palm it comfortably. This would make palming it even harder.

This is latest rumor:

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/02/20/ipad-pro-march-event-128gb-iphone-se/

In terms of the iPad Pro lineup, the report claims Apple will announce new 7.9-inch, 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch, and 12.9-inch models. The 10.5-inch model may not ship until May, while the other sizes are said to ship in March.

If the report is accurate, it would suggest Apple plans to refresh the iPad mini 4 with a new 7.9-inch iPad Pro model, update its existing 9.7-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, and introduce an all-new 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which is widely rumored to feature an edge-to-edge display without a Home button.

The one thing that doesn't make sense and is a bit worrying is all the reports that for both iPhone and iPad, the redesign is only for part of the lineup. If you are going to have an all new design, it should be across the entire line of "new" devices.

Giving only the 10.5" iPad Pro a new updated design will only give a reason for thos that want smaller or larger screens to just sit and wait it out until those screen sizes also get the new design treatments.

Same with iPhone. Having only the one model with the new form factor design doesn't maximize sales.

If they want a real boost for their Q2 numbers, they roll out all the iPad Pro models with the updated form factor design.

If they want a meteoric explosion of sales, they will do the same thing for the iPhone 10th anniversary. Completely wow everyone by giving the new and exciting form factor i all the screen size flavors. They would see sales like they never could have dreamed!

Most products with a larger screen like the Mac and iPads typically have anywhere from 1-3 inches in screen size difference. Why would anyone be convinced to switch from a 9.7 to a 10.5"? Thats 0.8". When it comes to a smaller phone screen thats a lot....but an iPad? Just doesn't seem right.

My guess would be they're going to make that the new "small pro" and dump the 9.7.

Or.......the rumors only have it half right and they'll keep the 9.7 and just shrink the bezel. In turn making it even lighter and more portable.

Guess we'll find out soon but just wanted to start a discussion on why people think a 0.8" is such a big deal on an iPad when in reality.....I really don't think it is.

#1. Few people remember the Dell Venue 10 a 10.5 OLED Android tablet. Why is this important. It had an amazing OLED LG display. More on this later.
#2. As Apple is doing by eliminating the Home Button and Bezels on the iPhone 8. They can get a 5.8" size display in the footprint of a 4.7" iPhone.
#3. So Apple partnered with LG and said make us a ton of 10.5" OLED displays So by eliminating the Bezels and Home Button on the 9.7" iPad Pro you can fit a 10.5" OLED display in the Same space. Since OLED displays can be much thinner too and lighter.
#4. What will happen to the 9.7" Model ? Nothing it will simply be called the 10.5" Because that's the Current size of a 9.7" IPad Pro is 10.5" it's just taken by Bezels. No one will support having 2 SKUs of such similar size.
#5. OLED is Huge until you see and use an OLED display for a while you just can't go back. To washed out LCDs or even worse Non-IPS LCDs.

It looks like they are going bezeless with the phone and an iPad (I think they got the idea from a Bond movie. They need to resort to this now :D )

No seriously, we've been seeing this in si-fi movies for years. Sort of like....inevitable.

Anyway, might be one of those things were you have to see it, then you suddenly have to have it.
And considering the cost of these things, this is a mixed bag, no? :D

OLED is better than LCD for most things, not all. But you are stating the obvious.

And the Dell Venue as an example? Samsung has had the tech in their tablets for a few years now.

We probably will have to wait until 2018 though to see it on the iPad. I doubt the factories can produce enough displays on the scale Apple would likely need right now.

But I would love to see me proven wrong if they unveil something this year.

See my only problem with it is that I love my 12.9" iPad Pro and I'm not sure if the 10.5" will be a significant drop in screen usage. If not I may opt for the 10.5" iPad Pro with the bezel less and no home button design.
