Given the interest/fascination many people have with Apple, I'm amazed that these (mostly pretty old and officially sanctioned) photos are all that can be found.

Their security, including employee policies, seems to work from this point of view. There are probably more pictures of the inside of NORAD or the Kremlin Bunker on the internet...

Man, I would give an arm and a leg to be able to visit Johnny Ive's design studio.

With this approach it would cost you your head to pop to the factory in Maranello or say a Raytheon facility, or any other much more interesting place than this stuffy, asexual, steril, dead and spooky computer gadget manufacturer. And to work at a place like this? GTFO!

And you'd pass up the opportunity to meet the best industrial designer of our times? Heck sure his work environment is a little in exciting, but it's realistic and it would help you understand part of the genius that is Ive.

Really old photos

I'm surprised no one has commented on this photo...

Just goes to show how old this photo is. That's Rubinstein in Blue ("father" of the iPod, and father of HP Web OS). And of course that's a much healthier Steve second from right.

No Forstall, No Eddie Cue, heck not even Tim Cook. Yup, this is the pre-IOS era.

Those look like Nanos near Rubinstein. I wonder what those long ruler-with-magnifying-glass things are.

Looks to me like a audio test room rather then a wireless test room. Those sound/echo dead rooms are common for testing speakers and microphones.

Within the apple regime of some twisted idea of dictatorship, despite their attractive and hugely known few dozen designs due to the nature of mass distributed product - never in my life! There are more interesting places with a much better climate where better art meets much higher technologies.

Do they even have a cafeteria named after Dieter Rams?

The atrium reminds me a little of my alma mater's (MTSU) library atrium.

Those are the best pictures I could find but if you've ever been there you'd know what I mean.

Reminds me of the BA HQ at Heathrow sort of. Loads of plants around the place, very bright. They also have like a place to get your haircut and as far as I remember a gym and stuff. It seemed more like a mini town, the floor was like like stone I think with water going around the place.

That's a rather tasteless comment.

Huh. Didn't realize anyone would take offense to that.

My only point was that this is an old photo showing him in healthier days (not much different than saying "hey look Bruce Willis still had hair" or "they still used white iMacs"). No malice meant or implied.

Anyway, to each his own.

<edit: thanks DoctorQ, saw your post after I wrote mine>

Lucky to have visited

I've been lucky enough to have visited the Apple campus. The first time I went by myself, it was a trek. I was visiting San Francisco, and took the nearly 1 1/2 hour Caltrain ride to Cupertino, then another 30 bus ride to the Apple HQ itself.

The second time, a buddy of mine that works at the Apple campus took me there, and past the entrance to the lobby. I got goosebumps as he pointed to Steve Jobs' office right off the lobby overlooking the entrance.

The Company store is awesome. You really want to buy everything, although most of their clothing runs a size small, so try on before buying and taking home. It's a beautiful campus, so the new one being planned and built soon, is going to be amazing. The area truly is gorgeous, but expensive, and I would literally sell a kidney to live in SF. It's such an inclusive, diverse, liberal city: I'd move there in a heartbeat to get away from the repressive south.

That reception photo is either a few years old now, or they're so tight at Apple they give their receptionists 6 year old machines :D

Actually, when I was there about a year ago they used older iMacs.

The check-in process was really cool though, instead of writing down your name and who you are meeting with on a ledger, they had an iMac set up with a custom application where you put in all your info...

And the mugs! I'd love an Apple mug!

I have one, I went in 2008 and had a snoop around in the atrium and the courtyard in the middle.

Also went to the shop and got a mug, a couple of t-shirts (my favourite being the one with "I visited the mother ship" on the front and an apple logo on the back) a couple of notepads, some pens and stuff. Was a cool shop.

Really surprised to see a Bomb Shelter pic get out. From what I was told, the CNC mill in the back has been replaced with an enterprise version Objet Connex, multi material 3D printer and a top of the line SolidWorks site license. This has to have been around 2005 before Rubie jumped to Palm to make the rejected iPhone concept the Palm Pre. The Bomb Shelter has the ability to fabricate everything needed for an Apple product sans a semiconductor die to try out different concepts. They are doing well. Love to see how it is now. Oh, the pic is staged with the place cleaned up. CNC's make a lot of shavings that get a life of their own at times. Interesting mix is forged metal, ABS plastic, solder and searing smells there. The ventilation is good but you can still smell prototypes off the mills. FYI, the odd items are flex rulers from a supplier.
