What is your concern? How does the commercial show it being used?

To me, iMessage is amazing. I would say 80% of my family members and friends have iPhones, and iMessage has made it very easy for me to communicate with them. I rely on iMessage more than phone calls because I get zero signal at work. It's free and reliable.

It's also allegedly got end-to-end encryption, no character limit, better quality media attachments and dead simple to use.

And you can see when delivered, read and when they are replying.

I don't see any downside to using it.

    ----------

Wow that's cool. Thanks for the info.

    ----------

Now once I decide to use iMessage do I also have to do the same settings to my iPad and iPod?

I like iMessage but for the life of me I can't ever get them synced between my iPhone and iPad (something I thought was supposed to be fixed with ios 6)

Only you can decide is it's a waste of time for you. No one can decide that for you.

The only downside I see is that if the servers go down... but you can always send as a text message then.

I love the ability to send via my MBP and iPad.

That's strange. Messages between my iPhone and MBP stay synced. Is your iPad setup to receive at the same addresses and phone numbers as your iPhone?

This is my favorite part. I like being able to have the option to sit down at my laptop and continue my conversation from there.

How do you add a phone number to the iPad? I can only do my email address.

I thought so. My iPhone phone number won't show up in imessage on either my ipad 3 running ios 6 or my 2012 MacBook Air running 10.8.2. I am confused as to how to get it to show up. All my email address have appeared just fine.

Is your phone number listed in your Apple ID account?

If so, try turning off iMessage on your MBA and iPad, restart devices, and restart iMessage.

If that hasn't resolved the problem:

    On your MBA, open Messages>Preferences>Accounts
You will see a box labeled "You can be reached for messages at"
Your phone number should appear in the list - make sure the box is checked

    On your iPad:
Settings>Messages>Send & Receive>You can be reached by iMessage at:
Your phone number should appear in the list - make sure the box is checked.

    Good luck!

Where do you check that? iTunes?

My phone is not showing up on my iPad 3 with iOS6 either, and it cannot be added to it. It only accepts additional email addresses.

Thanks in advance. Your post was very helpful.

Very weird. One more thing...on your MBP, go Messages>Preferences>Accounts. Log out of your account and log in again.

For some reason, you also need to LOG OUT of iMessage on your iPhone and then log back in (Don't just turn off the switch) to get it to register and kick your number to your other devices.

It's not as if you lose something if iMessage isn't great for you, or if you don't communicate with many (or any) others with an iDevice. The OS does the thinking, determining whether the other party's device is available for an iMessage, or needs a traditional text.

I much prefer iMessage for its flexibility over SMS/MMS, but I don't have to toggle between them, I just say what I want, and the OS takes care of the rest. Best of both world.

i think your thinking to much into it. just make sure its turned on and if you message someone with an I device it will go to them as a imessage and if not it goes as text. it is much better than a regular text for a number of reasons.

Ok... figured it out. I went back to this link and looked at my account.
My number was not in the "mobile number" field. It was in the Home Number field.

Then, I had to log out of iMessage (on my iPad and MBP both) and log back in. The mobile number was added along with the email address as an address to receive messages.
    Woohoo.

I knew there had to be something I was missing or doing wrong.

Your number doesn't need to be on that website for it to work. I just checked and mine isn't on there and mine has worked fine since day 1

You just have to play a log out and in game with them.
