i think your thinking to much into it. just make sure its turned on and if you message someone with an I device it will go to them as a imessage and if not it goes as text. it is much better than a regular text for a number of reasons.

So it only works for people that has IMESSAGE ONLY?

Thanks guys. Signing out and back in on my iPhone some how added my phone number to my iPad and macbook. Everything seems to be working as expected now!

No, it works to communicate with people who have activated iMessage. That could include people who only "text" through iMessage, like those with a Mac running Mountain Lion, those with an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone running iOS 5 and above. But they have to activate it on their end too.

I use iMessage everyday since it came with iOS 5. My friends have iPod touches and wifi only iPads. We can only use 200 texts messages which isn't enough. Most of the time we are on wifi. So iMessage keeps us in contact without using an IM messenger or Facebook messenger. Since you asked if its worth it or not. I will say if you have many friends with an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or a Mac on 10.8+, it is completely worth. You can text each other for no cost and plus you can make a group chat so you can talk to all of your friends in one group instead of switching to different chats.
