Well, first of all, there is no date set for the iPhone yet, and September is just a rumor. The only real date we have is "fall", so it could very well be out in october. Your provider may also bump up your upgrade date a month if you ask nicely. Then there's always the option of forcing your sister to pay the difference.

Really? Did I miss the announcement from Apple that said a new iPhone is coming out this fall?

Some people need to get it into their thick heads that the next iPhone might not come out until next year.

Oh, if we are going by analogies, when I went to Georgia Tech, I knew more females who knew how to drive gearshift than males.
I wanted to drive a gearshift...then I found out it was pretty useless without the rest of the car.

Right. iOS5 will come out without a new iPhone, and they will wait almost 2 years to release a new phone. And they will expect to retain some nonzero portion of the market share. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. There are only so many Apple sheep out there. The 4 is still a good phone. Over the next year, not so much.

oh gosh. OP this is exactly what has happened to me. I currently have a 4 year old phone from alltel which is now merged with verizon. My sister dropped her brand new phone in the toilet and used my upgrade so the soonest is in another year. But I think the whole switching upgrades (while convenient) is a bad idea. I mean, I am now not on contract and am using a dumb phone...wouldn't it be better if they a) gave me the deal b) locked me in 2 years c) locked me in $20+ data plan...they'd be making more money, so I don't see the point in making me pay the whole price. The 'full-prices', texting, and capped data plans are just a lot of income from thin-air (literally) for these companies, not to mention horrible customer service from verizon...if only phone companies were like apple. :D

I'm not saying they will wait, only that when people post that there is a going to be one in the fall, have no idea. Apple has already changed up the release time frame, so who says it will not be a Thanksgiving to Christmas release?

As for the Apple sheep, I love my iPhone4, and will not be upgrading unless it has some huge upgrades from the IP4.

My mom tried to convince me to join the family plan. This justifies my refusal. My parents and brother got two 3GSs and the 4, respectively. Considering how bad my parents are with technology, I can see them blowing my upgrade if they dropped their phone.
OP, since the next iphone isn't likely to come out until the release of ios 5, which will be between Sept-Nov, an October upgrade won't kill you. Besides, maybe you can use some guilt to screw with the stupid sibling.
FYI, some people are naturally klutzy. My iphone has managed to slip from my hand, in its otterbox, into my recycling bin a number of times. My hands aren't greasy and the case has an outer rubber shell. People can say the case is bulky, but I'd rather have an intact phone that isn't cracked.

iOS5 has been officially announced to be released in the fall. Therefore, there will be a new phone in the fall. And Thanksgiving to Christmas is mostly still fall.

And the sheep comment does not apply to people without upgrades available. It is to people who would purchase an iPhone4 over better phones (sgs2 for example) because its an apple.

Also, you said you were following the rumors carefully. If that were true you would have known for a long timethat there would No new iPhone this summer and fall would be the launch time. Have an Oct update isn't a big deal. Yes, your sis should have asked you first, but it's not a big deal. She gets what she wants iPhone4, you get what you want iPhone5.
The only problem I see is Shen she breaks her iphone4, she will use the other upgrade to get a new iPhone4. Then u will be really screwed.

You are right that my parents pay the bills, but I do have a job and go to college and buy all of my own things.

My suggestion then would be, when the next iPhone rolls out, transfer liability of the account to your parents, then open up up your own, new account.

They use your upgrade? They lose your discount.
