Funny, it seems like this number keeps going up. At first people said "You're OCD if you return 3 iPads.". Then it was 5 or 6. (I finally got a decent one after 5). Yesterday it was 12. Today it's 15.

Seems to me that as long as there are people who are getting good ones and people getting bad ones, the people getting bad ones will continue trying to find a good one.

Of course, its subjective. Do you think the AVERAGE Apple consumer is going to return an iPad because of one or even a few dead pixels. I seriously doubt it. It's all in your head dude. :cool:

I think it's the same line of thinking that leads many Americans to sterilize their homes with harsh illness causing chemicals due to an irrational belief that microscopic germs are plotting against them.

There is no official limit, and I don't think I ever used the term OCD at all, because I'm just getting sick of people throwing that around.

It depends on the situation. If I got 10 iPads in a row that all spontaneously combusted, I would obviously return each one until I got one that doesn't explode, or I would just give up and get my money back.

If I got 10 in a row that had one dead pixel, after a couple of returns, I would probably either chalk it up to one of two things: Either I should just expect any given return to have or develop a dead pixel, or I should call it quits and get my money back.

No LCD, company, or product in general is infallible. It's fair to put Apple up on a pedestal for their design, innovations, and ease of use. It's NOT fair to put them up on a pedestal for manufacturing that no company can ever achieve, at least not at a mass production level. And even if these things weren't mass produced, you would still find LCDs with dead pixels.

Good luck to those of you who are on your 8th iPad and finally found a "perfect" one. You will go through the roof when you find another dead pixel six months from now.

As someone stated, if the problem were as widespread as 12 defective iPad's in a row, Apple would have a MAJOR problem on it's hand and it would be MAJOR news. So far it only appears to be a big problem on MR. Someone finding problems on 12 iPad's in a row cannot be satisfied.
 
Since the introduction of the iPhone, when the floodgates of mass consumerism opened, Macrumors has become nothing but a way to complain and make ridiculous threads that waste everyone's time.

It doesn't make sense, I agree. But as someone who went thru 5 to get a decent one (which is STILL not as nice color wise as my iPad 2), logic tells me that the "flaws" people are returning multiple iPads over are more widespread than anyone realizes, and that those few who are seeing these flaws have a heightened sensitivity that others do not. And I am coming around to thinking that flaw is a misnomer for much of what people are seeing...many of the complaints are simply the byproduct of a new, imperfect technology, compounded by over production for a world wide simultaneous launch.

As a photo retoucher, it took me a VERY long time to be able to see the difference between a couple of points of color one way or another in a photo. But now that I do, it's glaringly obvious when I see it. And there are those who see minute color shifts equally as acutely with zero special training.

Just like some people have innate perfect pitch...
 
I have a few posts on here about my dead pixels and have had 12 different iPads from 2 different apple stores.... They have all had some kind of defect and I have finally got one that I'm happy with even thought it has a dead pixel.... If you can see a dead pixel easily then it is more than likely 2 or 3 together (I have had this) but I have also had single dead pixels (like my current ipad) which are very hard to spot, and cannot be seen with normal use, you have to look hard for them..... My advise (which has now changed) is: your never gonna get a perfect iPad so just enjoy it like I am now instead of stressing over little things like I did....

I'm sure everyone will take your advice and listen!:rolleyes:
 
I think that if a person is returning more than 3x of the same item to an Apple Store, the manager or senior Geek (somebody with authority on behalf of the store to make decisions), should then open the 4th at the store with the client, put the device through it's paces and if it passes the basic preliminary tests, the client gets the iPad (if they agree with the assessment) under the agreement that they do not return the product barring a serious defect or unserviceability of the device. If the client Does return complaining about a cosmetic issue, then they be refunded their purchase price and shown the door.

I don't think that would be unreasonable.
 
You can always have it exchanged 3-5 months from now when quality control goes up or when the Ipad3 starts to use the IGZO screens.

If they freak out that much over a single dead pixel, what do they do when they inevitably get a scratch on the screen? Pop an Zanex? :eek:

No, because I would have caused the scratch, where the dead pixel was there when I bought it..

I am just dumbfounded by this and others who report 6 to 12 echanges.

Why can't you inspect these devices in the store before you leave?

No, I went to the first store twice and ended up getting a refund..... Then 2 weeks later I missed not having an iPad and went to another apple store.... First one from this store had a few dead pixels together, so I returned it next day and the next one had a massive particle under the glass, next one had some dead pixels together in the corner which I was happy to keep, but when I showed him he said he would open another and that's the one I have now.... 1 dead pixel on right hand side of screen, very hard to spot and can't be seen unless you look really hard.... Had it a few days now and I've never noticed it...

Can I also point out to anyone that thinks that I'm making it up?????? Or that I'm imagining these dead pixels... I don't think the apple staff would open iPad after iPad unless they could see the dead pixels/ particles under screen/screen defects themselves... Funny, I never had this much problem with iPad, iPad 2, 3GS x 2, 4 x 2, 4S x 2, iPod
 
Yes there is something you're missing (and it's not you're fault).

Apple has a long history of hyping products to unreasonable, astronomical levels. When a company spends years brainwashing the public about their "Magical & Revolutionary" Powers... well you get the picture.

Fueled even further by an outrageously liberal return policy, things get out of control fast. Apple sucks the OCD types in, then drives them crazy as the reality hits, that even Apple cannot live up to their own self crafted image.

Totally agree, if I took an iPad with a dead pixel back to the apple store and they said "it's only 1 dead pixel, we won't swap it" then I would accept this and carry on with my life, but when I know in the back of my mind that they will swap them out till the cows come home I'm gonna keep on going.... But in the end I did stop because I found an iPad that was acceptable...

Don't get me wrong I really like Apple.

That said, I thoroughly detest how they hyped the product line with such outrageous language, year after year, during the reign of Steve Jobs.

Hopefully Tim Cook will settle things down to a reasonable level.

A great deal of American advertising is overly hyped and rather misleading in many cases. Yet no one has taken it to the extreme that Apple has.

Not only that, but it's a fact that Apple builds great products, and in my opinion, simply doesn't need to hype them like they've done. Most non-tech types I know, are already aware that Apple = Premium Quality.
 
That's true tho, I saw the iPad keynote and honestly it was a little off putting, its was almost as if they where really bad actors trying to seem super exited. It just didn't feel natural. It was too much, the kind of excitement they showed would have been appropriate for the first time introduction of the iphone. The iPad 3 was merely a revision of the iPad 2. Instead of saying something like: here's what we've worked on to refine the iPad and really get the best out of it, the tone was more like OMFG this is the most amazing and insane thing we have ever done! Its so different and super duper amazing, with this ipad you will be able to do more than anything (iPad 2 does the same thing.....) and saying things like it had better graphics performance than a PS3 SO AMAZING AHHHHHHHH... it just started to sound stupid IMHO

Obviously this will cause a lot of people to expect much more that is even possible from a production standpoint. Just my opinion :eek:
