The new Dell looks to be a solid business class workstation laptop.

Windows XP fixes what Apple refuses to comment on, so Apples golden days are over IMHO.

God, those are the ugliest things I've ever seen...

Windows XP fixes what??? Are you serious? Windows XP is better than OS X? LMAO...Now that's hilarious...

Oh, and don't forget...this is the year for LINUX...LMAO...

So? When your MacBook Pro is lagging behind the Dell in pro work, what will be on your mind? Looks or performance?

I don't want a notebook that looks like a turd, but performance IS more important than looks, thinness, and light weight in this area to a significant extent.

I wouldn't go that far…

With iPhone OS and multi-touch set to explode across Apple's handheld devices and notebooks, it could be said that, since the Intel transition, things are just getting started.

It'll get really hot with two Hard Drives, Quad Core and that much Ram.
Still, i'd like those specs in a MBP!

The danger of posting innovation from a rival company and rival operating system on mac forums always seems to attract the same calibre of responses-anti. It is clear that the spec of Dells new laptop is "amazing", I am a 100% mac user but have no negative reservations for Windows or products from Dell, HP and Acer. It is surprising that people with more mac products and experience than me still post them type of comments.

Incredible specs for a laptop.

I'm betting it will run over $6,000 for a close to maxxed out model.

The technology whore inside me is intrigued and impressed.

My keyboard mistypes the first letter the infamous "ELP" issue, happens in OSX 10.5.4 Win XP does not.To do extended typing bought an external keyboard, should have bought an Imac in that case.

Airport drop outs consistently, whereas parent's macbook does not, nor does my older G4 powerbook. On my $2500 MBP, the bootcamp partition again no drop outs.I showed this to my reseller and they thought I was kidding, I got the last laugh.

I love OSX and Apple, BTW just sadly disappointed in them.

There are always "unsatisfactory" and "unacceptable" experiences within any company and Apple won't be an exception in the computer world. I have a complaint ongoing with Executive Relations because I don't think I should get those "vertical stripes" every so often after shelling out the most I've ever paid for a computer but the person who is dealing with it is probably "the best" representative from a company I have ever dealt with. My unfortunate experience doesn't put me off Apple because I own other products that are "perfect", as long as the "problems" are sorted then I don't have an issue with Apple.

You're on an apple enthusiasts forum... what do you expect?

Maybe some maturity? Both operating systems have their pro's and cons. We can all sit on here and talk till no end about Apple products in a positive way which I take part in myself but when it comes to the continuous anti Microsoft and other type of comments it becomes annoying, it isn't needed.

That IS impressive!! Although i've got reservations.. I know you're saying you don't want comments on size and power consumption but these are integral to mobile computing!

Think about it.. At the end of the day, creating a good laptop (or any mobile computing solution for that matter) is about carefully judging the balance between power and portability.. I'd love a laptop this powerful but I can't help but think that given the sheer physical size, weight and power consumption of this proposed beast, it would be unusable as a mobile device.

When you add together; 1 x quad-core CPU + board w/ 4 SO-DIMM slots + 1GB graphics card + 2x HDD RAID + 17" you end up with one the unwieldiest 'mobile' behemoths to grace God's green earth!!

I mean it's powerful! there's no denying that but when you have to drag it around on a wheeled trolly with a back-up generator to ensure the battery doesn't conk-out after an hour, it's hardly what i would consider 'portable'... more 'luggable' :D

I think those who would buy this generally use the laptop in one place at a time, but also moving it from one place to another every now and then. So a desktop would be too heavy and bulky but a regular laptop is not powerful enough.

Lol, the whole time I watched that little trailer with the fake movie green sign beforehand that saids for dells eyes only (was thinking damnit I have apple eyes! @_@) I was thinking over and over in my mind.. but it doesnt have osx..

After every little introduction about want more memory? I was like yes.. but still no osx.. want quad core? I was like yes.. but still no osx.. and it saids it can run 2x 30" displays.. and I thought to myself cinema displays..?? oh wait.. still no osx... damnit, apple needs to make a similar portable but with osx!

Apparently Dell accidentally leaked their new Precision line and I have to say as far as professional laptops goes I'm very impressed.

Quad Core Processor
16Gb DDR3
2 500Gb Hard drives in RAID
Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M

And from Electronista:
"A jog wheel is also unique to the design and lets video editors scrub through footage or 3D modelers dial in specific settings more accurately than with a trackpad."

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/...en/precision_concept_jumppage?c=us&l=en&s=gen

And I don't wanna hear: "But it doesn't run OSX" or "But it's not one inch thin"

I'm just surprised at what's even capable in this laptop and I'm sure it'll be very expensive and thick and battery hungry, I just wonder if Apple will take some cues from this, at least for MacBook Pro line.

Lenvo W700 just released. SAME specs. Man, come'on apple get with it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5B108 Safari/525.20)

maybe the new Mbp will be up to spec. I hope so for those of us who need a powerful moblie audio/video workstation

TRUE

whys people saying its ugly, sure its a bit thick in the body but it doesnt look to shabby if you ask me. looks very understated and solid.

i like that you can power 2 30inch displays with the lid closed....thats bad ass

They've also apparently released a Latitude model that has 19 hours of battery life.:eek::eek:

it should defenately be interesting to see what Apple has up their sleeve, these in this thread computers are awesome.

I'd suggest it's aimed squarely at a consultant type who drops in to a customer, sets up their laptop in the corner and proceeds to do some heavyweight workstation type work on it, and really only needs portability between car and desk at either end.

And it might well hit the target very well. There is a market for that kind of thing out there, perhaps not a big one, but it's there.

Still wouldn't want one myself - put aside the whole Apple v. Dell thing for a moment, that isn't even what I'd choose from Dell's site if I had to get a Windows PC from them... but for someone else it'll be a solution to all their problems.

Fully configurable, streamlined and gorgeous. Just think of the options:

Think we might disagree on the gorgeous part. And the streamlined.

* Dual-core? No, YOU WANT quad-core processing power.
* 8GB memory limitation? Forget that, YOU WANT more.
* Storage. A few hundred Gig? YOU WANT a Terabyte and RAID.
* 17" screen? Yes, but YOU WANT 100% Adobe color gamut RGBLED.
* 512MB of dedicated graphics memory? No, YOU WANT more.

Don't ****ing tell me what I want. And what the **** is RGBLED?

Stop WANTING. It's coming soon.

Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of your whole marketing scheme? If I stop wanting, I won't buy your product. And again, quit telling me what to do.

Really sh*tty advertising they've got going there.
