Thinking about this, it makes sense. It must have been a nightmare for Apple to stock every possible combination as a distinct SKU as they did at launch. Keeping this to two or three core models, and making all the bands available as an extra, dramatically rationalises this.

Also forcing people to buy a combination they wouldn't have probably purchased and then sell them the band they actually wanted in the first place...

It would be nice to have the option to build the Apple Watch during the checkout process with choices of what bands you want, casing, accessories, etc. Samsung had something similar I believe with a Watch combination.

But given Apple's history, that's a very slim possibility. But I also understand the difficulty behind giving the consumer the possibilities of doing this, but none the less.

Motorola had it as well I believe - would be pretty great if Apple had it and yes it's more cumbersome but if anyone can, they can

This used to be an option when the Series 0 was first released. That is how I purchased my watch and strap.
