Partition the drive

I think stores are getting rid of 4gb ram laptops because there is only one MacBook Pro with 4gb ... I checked 3 stores online, same laptop with the same 4gb ... Seem like the standard ram is 8gb now... I even checked Apple Store canada, no 4gb ram, only 8gb and up

I will do the external drive because in case something happen to the pro ... At least my docs and pics are saved on the external drive

On the external drive partition it and have 1/2 for time machine backups this will give you a current backup of your whole system and can be really useful.... . The rest can be used for any media you want to keep I'd reccomend at least 1TB.

Yes 8gb is the least on all new rMBPs, have a look at refurbs on the apple store too all the same benefits and a few hundred dollars off.

As the poster above me mentioned, Macs have an automated backup solution called "Time Machine." If you designate an additional hard drive (or partition) to act as your Time Machine drive, OS X will make backups of your system once every hour, slowly deleting backups as they age so that you have a daily backup, then weekly. The weekly backups are not deleted until the hard drive starts to become full, at which point the oldest backups are deleted to clear space for your new backups. It's a very nice feature that makes backing up effortless. It makes moving between Macs very easy (you can just "migrate" from your Time Machine volume), and in cases of hardware failure or file corruption your files are still safe.

I believe Windows created a similar solution around the time of Windows 7, but I don't know much about it.

Not a fan of refrubs ... In the back of my head, I'm always going to think when it going to break/die

In the case of Apple, the refurbs get a brand new topcase and battery and get a second lookover from the QC department. They're not simply repackaged and stuffed in a box. They are as good as new and carry the same warranty as a new unit, and are eligible for AppleCare, same as a new unit.

You have nothing to fear/lose by going with an Apple refurb. Plenty of people on these forums have and plenty of my friends as well.

A Macbook prospect

There is a retina MacBook Pro 13.3", 2.6ghz, 8gb, and 128 ssd for $1250 at Canada's futureshop and best buy Black Friday sale

Regular price at canafa Apple Store is $1400 ... Is it a good deal or wait at another time like Xmas?
