Most of the other children were taken away after their second birthdays.

This doesn't quite make sense. If this woman only wanted to keep one child, then she shouldn't have been pregnant every single year. She was allowed to keep several children for two years or more, during which she probably have no way of knowing when/if they'd be taken away. Therefore, during that two year period, it makes no sense for her to try to get pregnant again, seeing how she already had a child. If she only wanted one child, she should have a two year break between most of her pregnancies. Seems like she wants more than just to keep one child.

As a species we're screwed if the educationally subnormal like this woman continue to reproduce at such high rates, whilst the more intelligent, career minded people reproduce much much less. We're headed for a place we have a diverging species of moronic spongers, and educated providers.

I'm not sure what the answer is - I can't think of one that I find morally acceptable.

Aside from the sad story, this made me laugh.

I am at a loss for words.......

She keeps pumping them out. Amazing.

Alcohol and smoking issues. Amazing x 2.

What are these people thinking?

At least child services is removing her kids.

Physical pain? I should imagine that after 10 they just fall out. The 14th is probably braced against the sides of her womb in case she sneezes too vigorously!

Edit: Oh my god she lives about three miles away from me!

This story just reinforces my (some say controversial) plan of mass sterilization of council estates ;)

The government considered putting contraceptives in the drinking water but then realised it was pointless as they would float to the surface.

It's a shame that eugenics has such a bum nazi-related rap. Stories like this (along with things like Home) however can only serve to increase support for a modern-day reconsideration of it.

I think we can probably all agree that a mid-pregnancy smoking and drinking educationally subnormal moron producing more than a dozen kids that by default have to be taken off her for their own good is what can be described as 'a problem'.

But I don't know how to fix it.

Any suggestions? Eugenics is off the board - that's just morally reprehensible.

Beyond education, there may be no way to fix it. There are always going to be cases which get through the gaps in any reasonable regime.

Agreed. Entirely deserved bum rap because its crap pseudoscience.

I think you're giving too much value to human life. We are approaching 7 billion people on earth, but it should be at less than half of that in order to manage a degree of sustainability and equality of living standards. There has to be a point at which governments act on this. Sadly it's such a vote loser (given that as a species our main objective is to reproduce) that that day will be a long way off.

If someone plans to needlessly and recklessly reproduce then i would suggest that it is their governments duty to sterilise them.

I understand the civil liberties argument and the ethical concerns, but common sense and the greater good should outweigh this.

Unmetered reproduction should no long be an automatic right.

I value human life the way I do because in being forced to decide between life and death for others, I have learned that individual life has value, whether that is one person or 7 billion.

How did you arrive at this reckoning?

Needlessly? Who needs to reproduce, and how do we select those who need to from those who merely wish to?

I'm not sure how. It might have been through watching HOME or maybe an article somewhere. Here is an article from Ecofuture that deals with it though.

As for "needlessly", perhaps "unnecessarily" would have been a better word? Of course, as with any species, we need to survive by reproducing, but it's far from necessary to have 14 children, wouldn't you agree?

Ultimately overpopulation will inevitably become one of the most pressing issues that we face, especially when eminent figures such as David Attenborough start the ball rolling.
