Just started keeping a journal (never done so in my whole life). Found the app Day One and it's brilliant. Simple yet effective.

Also the dev is planning updates to support iCloud, Full Screen, and Photo's.

Can't wait!

Nice find. I am about to begin a new long-term research project and I have been meaning to start a journal to document my progress and this seems like it would be a no-frills solution.

As for my app recommendations: Graphic Converter (neat, simple graphics tool), Scrivener (great word processor for writers), and Dropbox. As for professional applications, I think Acrobat X Pro is a must for anyone who consistently deals with text PDFs.

Why not use Scrivener since you already have it. It will allow you to do what you want, plus much more, all the way through your writing phase.

I know, but I think I need to keep a separate journal. I need to just sit down and reflect on what I am doing and where I am going and if I am in the same app where I work, I think I will feel constrained by the work I have done and the journal is supposed to be more philosophical. Does that make sense? I just like the idea of having a separate journal that I can read on its own to track how my ideas develop, people I talk to about my project and stuff like that. I don't know. I am terrible at journaling, which is actually a liability in my field :s

That’s alright, most of us are not that good at it either. We just pretend... :D

Two directions I might suggest. I used Circus Ponies Notebook for about two years as a strict journal/diary. It worked well and has an automated index of every word. However, even with just text it was close to 3 MB; I didn’t even think about adding photos.

For longer approach, I began experimenting with Tinderbox last December. It has a steep learning curve (and a high price), but the potential for research is far beyond even one user’s capability, as the developer notes. After several start/stop intervals playing and trying things, I finally plunged ahead and started several projects using Tinderbox. The first was to develop seminary curriculum and include all class notes, assignments, bibliographies, etc. and summaries. It has worked very well and expands as I improve, modify. This is a huge project, yet the TB file is only 0.4 MB.

Then about three months ago I began using TB for daily journal of meetings, appointments, summaries, project notes, etc. It worked very well. So about a month ago I went back to Notebook to see if that would be better. It just doesn’t measure up to the flexibility and power of TB; after two weeks I transferred all those Notebook pages into TB. I am very glad I did.

If you like tracking patterns or connections in your notes and journal, TB is unmatched. I am probably only using about 1/10 of 1% of the potential of TB. But it has been a solid investment for me. The key is to start using it, just making notes, then learn about the deeper stuff as you learn and as your data grows.

Just some thoughts from an old codger...

Is file size really an issue with terabyte drives these days? I use Circus Ponies Notebook for class notes (as an instructor) and keeping track of student projects. One notebook, for Senior projects, is 281 MB. It works just fine. It was virtually impossible to keep track of things before. Now there is a page for each student and their project history with all reports, meeting notes, and correspondence in chronological order. Photos, too. Even with it's complexity, I've had no problem synchronizing it between my MacBook and iMac with Chronosync (I could use DropBox as well), and never lost any data.

(It sounds like Tinderbox is storing links to files stored elsewhere in order to keep the size of its files down.)

Yes, I know. Another factor is that I couldn’t access anything in Notebook for a while. Made me uneasy if I couldn’t. Never could resolve why, either. As both pastor of a congregation and president of a seminary, I need something rock solid and reliable (TB, Scrivener, Mellel, Accordance are my main apps for that very reason).

No, the links are stored within TB.

Thanks for the tips. For what I am doing, we're strongly encouraged to keep traditional paper journals (since when we're in the field we may not have access to electricity or it might be unsafe to bring a computer due to risk of theft), but alas I cannot read my own handwriting  Also, my area of research focuses on a part of the world where I can safely employ my gadgets in the field without it being seen as intrusive or distracting. (I'm an anthropologist)

Here are my fave mac apps for now:

1) Caffeine (otherwise the constant dimming of the screen drives me mad)
2) Scrivener (crucial for working on my thesis)
3) Notebook (absolutely fab for keeping digital notes)
4) Dress Assistant (a digital inventory of my wardrobe... bec I have way too much stuff, I actually forget what I own)
5) iScrapbook (totally fun and a fraction of the cost of doing it the traditional way)
6) Transmission (for downloading movies and songs)
7) VLC (for playing those downloaded movies)

Try onyx imstead of cleanmymac, also icleanmemory (free's used ram, paid app on macappstore)

lockscreen (paid,macappstore)

mplayerx and vlc (if you wanna play any video files these 2 make it possible, both are free)

xld (converts any audio file into a different one, free)

One app that I would not recommend, based on the number of complaints that have been posted in this forum and elsewhere, is CleanMyMac. As an example: CleanMyMac cleaned too much.

Exactly I recommend onxy instead

thanks guys i havent encounted any clean my mac problems luckily.. thanks for the heads up! it just got appzapped:D
In most cases, app removal software such as AppZapper doesn't do a thorough job of finding and removing files/folders related to deleted apps. For more information, read this.

The most effective method for complete app removal is manual deletion:
You may want to use this method to search for "CleanMyMac" elements that remain.
