But I know from personal experience that it's often hard to try to use a language you're learning in its country of origin; soon as you open your mouth, the locals can hear you're American, and they are either quite rude to you (France) because they choose you as a target for everything they don't like about your country's politics, or decide that you've come all that way and spent all that money just so they can practise their English with you (most other places).
I find the French are in the main extremely welcoming to foreigners trying to speak their language. From experience, only in Paris are they rude about it, and you should hear what the rest of the French think about Les Parisiennes :p

I would like to know how many of these Europeans that are stereotyping us Americans have actually been here :p
At least for the Brits quite a few of us. For instance I've been to California twice, and Nevada, Florida and Hawaii each once. Not managed New York, New England or The Lakes yet, each of which I want to visit, but there's plenty of time for that once Bush is out of office :)

In the church another (or maybe the same) group of americans loudly stated "Now THIS is how you pray, y'all." :D Bless!

In Notre Dame cathedral there are ropped off areas for people to use for quite prayer. There are BIG signs, in several languages, near the ropes saying not to enter unless you are using it for prayer.

Last time I was there a large family of loud, large Americans moved the ropes, surrounded an old woman, who was obvioulsy praying. and then proceed to take about 100 photos of group shots.
Me and my mate just stood there in total disbelief. When the they had finished my mate stopped the dad and pointed at the sign.
The dad just shrugged and said "I'll do what I want, I'm American" and strolled off.

Oh, I love Les Parisiennes! I found them very friendly.

American arrogance and stupidity aside, it's important to remember Brits act like complete wankers all over Europe frequently. I feel sorry for those that live in Euro party towns for having to put up with our mindless drunk football loving morons and their skanks every summer

Americans are just an easy target because there's so bloody many of them :p

Stag and hen nights *shudders*
THE most embarrassing thing to see whilst abroad is a bunch of pissed up slappers or knobends dressed up swearing at the locals!

*ahem*

No correlation there. It's perfectly possible to like football and still be able to appreciate a good Merlot without necking it, urinating on a pavement and starting a fight

I was in Venice last week and went to visit St. Mark's. Liek any tourist destination that is a Cathedral there were many sign asking for quiet and no photographs. We went to have a look at the alter screen (very ornate) and a small group of French tourists just plouged in with there cameras and began taking shots. If that wasn't enough one of their groups mobile phones rang, and instead of looking suitably mortified and turning it off she answered and began to have an conversation.
I was completely blown away by this lack of respect and just glared at her until she moved... only to another corner of the cathedral to carry on her converation.

Moral of the story? There are wankers from every country, no exceptions.

:D I think I'd agree with that statement.

The other thing, people complaining about "stupid" remarks that Americans make, well, what about language? As in, for all we know, other tourists could be making the same sorts of statements/ questions but simply in a language you're not able to understand. :p

Thanks petal ;)

Let's not get started on the French eh? ;) :p

Nowadays, it is bad taste to have good manners :(

True! There are soo many drunk Brits and Australians (the worst) in Munich right now. And the Italians are coming this weekend (holiday), oy....

I must be reading that wrong.

...Europe's population density is 289 per sq. mile, while USA's is 80 per sq. mile.

Meh...I spent about three seconds looking that up, and I didn't even click the google link to the webpage. However, my point still remains.

Not really - the figures you quoted were the reverse of the actual ones.
How so? His point was that major cities in the US are more spread out than Europe. Citing the wrong figures doesn't make that less of a fact, does it?
