I'm just wondering: When did 'twice as fast with improved hardware' become an 'incremental upgrade'?

Because the case looks the same?

Honestly, a compass and Nike+ are useless for the majority of people. It comes down to a new camera, and faster phone.

Honestly, a 5 Megapixel Camera, and LED flash are useless for the majority of people. It comes down to a BETTER phone with most usability, while keeping it affordable.

"One More Thing..." Next upgrade should come with a dildo so that when you're all alone, and bored, u'll know what to do! ;)

Considering that Apple will implement the new multicore ARM processors with a dedicated graphics chip next year....yea it is incremental.;)

The doubling of the processor, ram and graphics is FALSE. You expected doubling of each, Apple didn't quite deliver that far.
While the amount of RAM and processor speed is unknown, we can extrapolate that its a significant increase. We definitely do get better battery life.

...Also, if a 3G user wanted a video camera they could just jailbreak.
And you would not get 30fps VGA quality with built in trimming on Cycorder, and obviously richer video software officially down the road which can easily make use of the faster processor. Speaking of JBing, we can now do more with the increased RAM and processor speed. More backgrounding is always better.

Next year will be better. Don't worry.:D
It always is, and people always complain about what it doesn't have.

"one more thing"...next upgrade should have the dedicated graphics chip as well as the arm processors. THOSE will truly make the iPhone faster and allow it to view HD content (especially with its new OLED screen).

Sweet, new processor type to make our current software unrunable at native speeds without a rewrite. Emulation of legacy code always makes a device run its software faster.

Thank god we can at least watch HD content on a 320x480 screen.

why the heck people got so excited when last year Apple added 3G and GPS... and changed from Strong Aluminum Back, to a cheap-looking crackable plastic back?! and they didn't even go above the 8GB/16GB that they started with! (put aside the 4G)! didn't change the cam! didn't change performance!

while this year, they doubled the CPU, RAM and graphics; they built-in a Compass, Nike+, Voice Control; AND they added auto-focus, white balance, and macro to a newly revamped 3.2 Camera (w/ video) !!! AND they upped the storage to a staggering 32GB!! AND they put an extra coating on the screen to evade smudges and fingerprints! and all in all it's a 'greener' iPhone!!

I've been saying this since yesterday. 3G --> 3GS is a more significant upgrade than 2G --> 3G. Once you stop thinking of the iphone as a phone and start thinking of it as a mobile computer that happens to make phone calls, you'll understand why.

The doubling of the processor, ram and graphics is FALSE. You expected doubling of each, Apple didn't quite deliver that far.

Stop trolling. Seriously, just stop. Nike+ was a much-requested feature and if you don't get the uses for the compass, your loss. Also, you're glossing over the doubling of capacity (arguably the most significant change) and voice commands. Finally, you either forgot the faster 3G or lumped it in with "faster phone" - either way, you're disregarding a significant upgrade.

As for doubling of processor/RAM/graphics being false... source?

Exactly. And the difference is going to become more and more apparent as devs start making apps that take up large chunks of space (already started to happen) and have requirements that the 3G can't handle or handles very badly.

HA! The process doubling is easily seen as false since Apple didn't even announce the specs! If Apple truly upgraded it that much, don't you think they would be lauding the fact? Why would they keep something so big so secret? Instead, they just said "magic". That's why. Don't be so naive.

Do you have a source to say otherwise, other than the millions of hopeful rumors by people like you. I'm not trolling, I'm a realist. I suggest you live with the fact that the upgrade was not what you dreamed it was.

As for the 7.2 HSDPA, AT&T hasn't even rolled those towers out yet. They stated 2-3 weeks ago they wouldn't start until the end of the year and finish in 2011. By the time it becomes even remotely useful a new, better iPhone will be out.

So no, I didn't "gloss" over any facts. I simply stated the truth about them, not some fanboyish dream. ;)

"one more thing"...if the 3G to 3GS upgrade was SOOOO much bigger you would have thought apple would have come up with a more revolutionary name than 3GS....as in not simply a small addition to the 3G (like it is).

Its a phone, not a computer. Most people don't even know what processor and how much RAM is in the existing phone. They could say we now have 300MB of RAM no one would really know how good that was. However, people can relate to it being twice as fast. Magic is a great way to present it to anyone with a sense of humor.

And those of us who upgrade now will take advantage of them in the second year of our contract. There's always a new phone, but at least this one is future proof against those towers. As opposed to 2G vs 3G.

Too bad your arguments rely on half truths.....

like the underlined, the towers need a simple upgrade, not to be replaced.

And as for the processor, you think it might have to do with all the bitching people were doing about Apple underclocking previous processors? Maybe just a bit? My arguments just as good as yours because its logical, yet has no actual evidence.

Wtf

If you compare the change of hardware between the iphone vs iphone 3g, it is a lot less significant:
- 3G added
- New case

Compared to iphone 3g vs 3gs:
- High speed 3g
- New innards to dramatically improve performance
- 3 megapixel camera
- auto focus
- video recording
- voice control
- digital compass

Just cause the case design hasn't changed doesn't mean it is not a 'real' upgrade! The Mac Pro has had basically the same body since 2007!

I have waited for 2 years for my Verizon contract to expire and I now have less than a month to go.

Many people seem to think a 'real' iPhone upgrade will come next summer. How likely is so?

I was thinking about getting the $199 3GS, but if above is true, I will just get the $99 3G and upgrade next year.

Huh? This is a real upgrade.

And yours rely on what truths? Still don't see any reasoning behind your OPINIONS!

and harry(whatever) you forgot GPS. If you want to go into specifics for each thing such as auto focus, megapixels you could talk about google maps directions instantly, GPS in apps, 3G only apps etc. See you can carry either upgrade us much as you wanted.

Whatever, it doesn't matter. You know what you're getting and whether you actually want to believe your false hopes is your prerogative.

I'm not even buying an iphone, Im just demonstrating how neither of our posts have anything credible other than loose logic to support them, yet they still are both valid and contradict each other.

In the simplest terms, apple has done something to speed up the phone, thats the only fact we have.

and the only thing I wanted was a glowing apple on the back!!

no, just kidding.

I am SO gonna buy the new iPhone as soon as it's released.

technology will move forward, but I hop on the train rater sooner than later.

I think no one knows how the next iPhone looks or when it's due.

I for one was hoping for an OLED screen - now that would have set this iPhone apart. But it is what it is and there is no guarantee next years update will see one either. If you have a need for the new phone's features or was an original iPhone purchaser like me, then moving up to the new model makes plenty of sense. If you upgraded last year and already have a 3G phone then the new OS upgrade will make you feel like you've got a new phone. Either way it should be a win/win for all! Or look at it this way, the iPhone sure beats the hell out of the Pre or anything else that's out there for the same money.
