A single image changed my mind about buying the MacBook

Well illustrated point, but let's put things into context. Not every user requires a large number of peripherals. There are many users who rarely or never use external devices. To some, portability and other factors play a much more important role.

The target audience for the ultra-portable computer isn't someone with ton of external gear and the photo is clearly exaggerating a problem that doesn't really exist. Apple certainly offers other products that will better fill the need for the use of large number of external devices. RMB isn't the product intended to fill this need.

They made a point, sure. But what's the point? Don't buy a machine that doesn't fit your needs?

I was thinking about upgrading my MBA to a MacBook but after considering EVERYTHING I got to this image (The Verge). Sorry but I cannot agree to this.

Thank you for sharing this. I was also on verge of MacBook vs. MBP. MY observation is that the image you shared can be taken as both pros and cons. Wen you have these many cables attached to even MBP, it will surely look messy, in fact even worse because not all ports are on same side. Indeed, I find this more useful as all ports are on one side. Secondly, situation to connect all these at one time is perhaps once in month. For remaining 29 days, I would be pretty happy with the single port. Not to forget the battery pack that you can use to charge the laptop. I am leaning to MacBook . Just my two cents.

So what your saying is the Macbook will NEVER have more than one USB-C port because of the headphone jack? I find that hard to believe.
No, what I said is that I see no place to fit a second USBC port without changing the physical design to make room for one unless they replace the headphone jack.

If you do see a spot on the current chassis, please point it out.

I'm guessing you have never heard of or looked at the HP Spectre they seemed to have figured it out. You will be amazed.

Here yeah go two possible locations...

How will you open the screen lid since it occludes both of those locations?

Also -- Comparing a 13.3" Spectre to a 12" Macbook is akin to complaining about the Miata having no rear seats and offering up a VW EOS for comparison. The Spectre 13.3 screen makes the whole thing substantially wider and deeper, thus providing lots of space for additional ports. Now if THAT had only one port we'd have cause for complaint!

You wouldn't. You're 100% right. There's a reason they didn't do it that way. They could have fit way more if it wasn't tapered, but that would kill the weight and thickness benefit over the Air and MBP. I like it fine the way it is. I bought a hub but find that I rarely use it.

You win! It will never have another port. Your right the lid blocks it..
Ha. ;) It's not about winning, it's about being factual in our assessments.

While I doubt the current design will see another port, that doesn't preclude Apple from changing the design in some manner that then allows for it if they feel the need for it.

I'm not sure how they do so without making it physically larger, but one thing I've learned is never say never. ;)

My guess is when the rMBP's are eventually updated, they will be shrunk in size/weight enough that those truly needing more than one port will be satisfied choosing an rMBP instead. (most... Apple clearly doesn't seek to please EVERYbody, so there will always be some left unhappy)

Rumor iPhone might be losing the 3.5mm jack and requires an adapter.

rMB could also ditch the 3.5mm jack and replace that with another usb-c

I would hope Apple is planning to add a 14" MacBook to supplant the 13" Air while also maintaining a strong enough performance distinction from the 13" (or 14"?) redesigned Pro expected this fall. A 14" MacBook may very well include an additional USB-C port. Apple would certainly have the room for it.

Agreed, albeit it may be that they're able to slim down the MBP13 enough to take this spot. One possible lineup may be 12" rMB, then a rMBP14 and rMBP15 both taking design cues from the rMB, but adding higher TDP processors (and fans), as well as more ports since the large chassis would allow such easily. It may be difficult to have product differentiation having both a MB and MBP at the 13.3/14 size unless the rMB12 price were cut substantially.

Where much of the angst seems to come from is everyone's been left hanging. The current MBP designs are begging for an update, the product lineup is a mess, and it seems pretty clear what would make sense for Apple to do... yet we're still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

No doubt about that. I get that Intel's chip roll out has something to do with that, but this delay is getting pretty long in the tooth (no pun intended?). As far as the lineup is concerned: 12" and 14" MB's, 14" and 16" MBP's, all with retina screens, SSDs, and USB-C/TB3. MacBooks are for the consumer or for max portability while the Pro uses more powerful processors and discrete graphics (unlikely, that). Seems like a straightforward path to me, but hey, I'm not running the show.

OP here. Thank you all for your valuable insight. I've learned a lot about everything Apple (computers, forums, Apple fans, Apple fans moods, specs, and so on).

PS: Still not buying : )
