id rather buy a Mac Mini and use that extra $500 on an iPad 2, bam 2 birds one stone mobile and i have a dedicated computer hooked up to my TV

This is exactly what I was describing to a friend recently of what i'll most likely be doing in 2-3 years when my 2009 MBP goes away.

I can it now, a Mini connected to my HDTV, with a wireless Apple keyboard and trackpad on the nearby couch....and of course an iPad 4 as my main day to day. Serious. Once I get my own place, this is the route i'll be taking. By then i'll be out of university and will not need a MBP as much anymore. The wireless keyboard connected with the iPad would be more than enough.

How do you plan to connect your MacBook based HTPC to your TV? Most TVs don't have a mini display port so adaptors are needed, while the mini has HDMI built in. But if all you want is a media PC, the current mini is likely to be fine anyway.

With a $7 HDMI to mini display cable.

If the 2011 Mini won't boot SL, then the 13" MBP will be my new Mini...

I've got my Black MacBook with lid closed hooked up to a 24" display. Works beautifully...
