I am the owner of just a Series 6, but I have 5 non-OEM bands and I can say watch bands is one of the areas where Apple makes the biggest profit margins.

Some bands are made cheaper than others, most of them are just Chinese knockoffs, but I'd have to disagree based on my own personal experience. You don't have to go OEM to have nice, secure bands.

I have a bunch of Apple Watch bands both OEM and aftermarket. Probably c few dozen of all sorts starting from the Apple Watch 1 to the Ultra. For the most part, I prefer OEM, but some of the aftermarket bands are great as well. If I were to provide one criticism for aftermarket bands, it's that the attachment is sometimes loose or rattles while the OEM straps click in solidly.

How is it possible that resellers sell these for a fraction of the original price on Apple's website, if Apple never has any promo on these items?
There's a variety of reasons, but most of the time it's because the color gets discontinued and stores need them gone to make room for the next set of colors. For example, Best Buy has Dark Cherry, which was a Fall 2021 color, for $24.99 right now depending on store availability.

Is it because they are used?
Used bands can be one reason they're resold cheap, but they're still Apple braded, so they keep their value when you resell them. I have over 100 OEM bands and I'd say a good majority are used off eBay and other secondhand sites. As long as you clean them when you get them, I don't see why you wouldn't wear it any less than you would a used shirt.

The value in OEM bands even when used is just another reason to stick to Apple imo. I have some colors that are hard to find and could even be sold for far more than I paid for them if I were to drop them now.

How can you be 100% sure they are OEM ?
Knockoffs are cheap. This means there are a lot of small differences between them and the real bands that these companies just don't bother to accurately recreate. There's a large thread in the watch accessories forum called How to detect fake versus genuine authentic OEM Apple bands that goes over pretty much everything you need to know to discern fakes from real Apple branded bands. Even if you're still unsure about authenticity, you can reply with pictures of the band there and any number of collectors will reply and give you their thoughts. If you collect these bands, you pick up on what makes them fake and authentic pretty quick.

There's also a thread for Discounts & Sales on OEM bands where deals often get posted. We've started to see some Ultra bands get listed for as much as 60% off retail just from people who ordered the wrong size.

If you want OEM, I highly advise watching this thread and checking sites like those I mentioned. You'll get bands for far less than retail.

I want to like the Alpine band, but I just can't get it to fit me right. It's either one loop too loose or one loop too tight, but not just right on my wrist. Of the Ultra bands, so far, the Ocean band fits me the best and is the most comfortable, but I got a Nereides Rugged strap off Amazon that's very comfortable, and the legacy OEM straps are comfortable also.
Hmmm -- I probably should drop by the Apple store and actually try on the alpine band. I assumed that a large one would fit, but maybe it will end up one loop too loose or too tight. Didn't realize that might be a problem. Thanks for the heads up!

You can get wildly different results, but price is a decent indicator of quality in my experience with 3rd party bands. I bought a cheap milanese loop from Best Buy ($10) and it was falling apart a bit and visibly losing its coating within a month. I bought another milanese loop from affinity bands online. Spent $50, and it's still in really good shape. If you look really carefully, you can see a couple of the links have gotten slightly distorted or misaligned over the years (invisible unless you're looking closely).

I use the L with a 190mm or so wrist, on loop 6 casually and when I surf on 5

But the Ocean band happens to fit my wrist like a glove so I picked up all three .
I surf in mine and not convinced the ocean band end will not pull out, the trail loop maybe ok depends on how strong the velcro is, the nike velcro I wouldn't it got weaker over time, had a UAG velcro and it was good.
You do get a perfect fit with the velcro bands.
The alpine is vey secure.

I’ve been a scuba diver all of my adult life and a search and recovery diver for half my adult life. The Ocean band is familiar territory for me and not unlike the bands I already use for heavy dive work so I’m not that worried it’s not going to hold up. One of the downsides to my line of work is that I dive in some nasty environments including water polluted with petroleum products and I can’t wear fabric bands at all. The rubber bands hold up the best and don’t get soaked in oil.

Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of: lugs that don’t slot in quite perfectly and rattle. That would annoy the hell out of me :)

Yeah, Trail band would be the best for fit, but boy is it ugly. :) I have the Sports loop for my Series 4 and it’s essentially the same thing. And yes, it is ugly, but very comfortable and works :)

The Trail band is almost identical in construct to the legacy Sport Loop band. I have used the Sport Loop on the Ultra and while it is comfortable, I’m going to say it’s no more comfortable that the Ocean band. The Ocean band has become my favorite Ultra band and that’s pretty much how I wear it daily. I wore the Alpine loop one day and couldn’t wait to take it off. It was either too loose or too tight all day long.

I picked up a large alpine loop today. I have 8 inch wrists so I probably could have got by with a medium. Either way, it’s extremely comfortable. Because the band is a lightweight polyester, it does make the weight of the watch more noticeable as opposed to the ocean band, but ever so slightly. There is slight flexibility and the loops are just as close together as the slots in the OB. I found it pretty easy to find an appropriate loop to hook into. No issue with “to tight” or “too loose” for me, but it certainly doesn’t flex as much as the ocean band does. The large sized band gives more material to work with and maybe it was just enough to have the flexibility to be comfortable, idk.

Jerk.

Just kidding! I'm DYING to get my hands on an Ultra with orange alpine band. Congrats!
Yep, same here.....and thus I ordered one. And then I saw a green one available locally so I tried that and knew straight away that this was the better colour for me!! Cancelled my order for orange and went green!
Orange will slowly become grubby and look dirty. Green on the other hand will just become a darker green.
Also it stands out less which I think is good. Especially since I travel a lot around the world for work and a bright orange strap might attract the wrong people in even worse places!

I've yet to try a link band that even comes close to Apple's Link Bracelet.
Well, my blue woven nylon band did outlast a third party band bought a few months later. So there’s that.
I mean for the prices you can buy OEM bands on eBay, Mercari, OfferUp, even from stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Amazon through their sales, I see no reason to go for knockoffs. I've gotten OEM sport bands for less than $15 a piece, leather for $20, and even link bracelets at $80. You don't need to go OEM, sure, but if your reason is price, then you should look literally anywhere but Apple's website.
For someone with picky skin, non-OEM may as well be the only choice going forward. I never understand why apple never made another woven nylon band, but so far that’s the only material works with my skins. It’s not about price, it’s about availability.

I’m confused. How are you afraid of the ocean band coming off? You do know that the second titanium clasp is removable right? You can then place it through the hole of BOTH the tail end and a hole on the primary end wherever they meet up making it nearly impossible to come off. Unless of course the band rips altogether. That’s the whole point of the band. It’s hard to explain in words but it’s like a locking mechanism for your band. The clasp is not just designed to move up and down to slide the end into. The clasp is supposed to slide into the hole on your tail end when engaged in water sports.

Ok didn’t know that, in the photos it just looks like it works like a band that comes with most divers watches. I got mine with alpine so haven’t tried the ocean yet.

Well, I assumed that was the case. I’ve been looking for photos showing that but I’m not seeing any. I could be wrong… but I don’t see why that wouldn’t be possible. That would make it a pain to take off - so you wouldn’t always do that, but it would certainly the most secure band available. Just double clasp it when doing water sports. Let’s see if someone with the band corrects me.

So anyone have recommendations for third party Ultra watch bands? I know there are plenty out there but which ones are reputable? I don't want a band that suddenly breaks and the Watch falls off -- a Watch that was $800 of indulgence. =)

No you don’t need OEM. I bought an alpine loop from eBay £20 and it’s great quality. I buy all my watch bands from eBay as they’re overpriced and I can’t tell the difference.
