1)As a rule, what is a good amount of RAM to have in OS X ? (internet, powerpoint, excel, digital photography, some DV)

I would recommend a minimum of 512 MB. Even more if you can afford it. Usually you can get a better deal buying RAM from a 3rd party like crucial.com, but lately Apple has lowered its RAM prices, so if you are buying a 800 Mhz iBook, it is probably easiest just to get the RAM straight from Apple (and not much more expensive).

2) Is Applecare a good idea? How much do PB's and ibooks usually cost to repair, as far as common problems go? (I know a 3 year warrenty is the safest bet, but I'm on a budget)

Well, many Platinum credit cards, and also the BLUE card from AmEx, will double the warranty for free. So if you are using one of those cards, then I wouldn't bother with Applecare, since you can already get a 2 yr warranty for free anyway (in fact, you may want to look into getting a BLUE card just for this purchase...when my iBook battery died 1.5 yrs after purchase, AmEx replaced it for me w/no hassle at all).

3) I am a student, and use powerpoint a lot. My college doesnt have Keynote on any of its Macs (2:1 mac: pc ratio :)), so I have never used it. Is Keynote equal to/better than Powerpoint?

My friend briefly demoed Keynote to me - it looked quite capable (if nothing else, the visual effects are much better than Powerpoint!). I used to have to use Powerpoint at work, and I hated it, so I can't imagine it could be much *worse* than Powerpoint! =)

Thankyou to everyone who has offered thier advice and experiances! This (and several other forums here) have been really helpful. Right now, I think I am gonna go for a 12 inch 800mhz G4 iBook w/ combo drive, 640MB, and a 60GB HDD. Most of you seem to like Keynote, so I think I will give it a try (if its anything like the other Apple programs I've used, I'm gonna love it :D ) I'm still unsure about Applecare, so I am gonna take advantage of that one year grace period and see what happens....

Once again, thanks for your help!

apple care is a better deal for you don't forget as you're a student. I would never pay full price but as a student the price looks much more appealing

cheers
