A year later, Antennagate Revisited.

So, have you accepted that fact that your phone sucks as a phone (be honest with yourself :)) and are just riding the remainder of your 2yr contract?

Do you think the iPhone 5 will be a redesign partially because of the antennagate?
As you can see by the responses to your post, speaking the truth about your personal iPhone experience is risky business.

There are far too many living in denial, or sequestered behind the walled garden of Apple. Any post that fails to praise the almighty iPhone is met with great hostility & hatred.

Unfortunately what is lost on most, is their attacks speak volumes about them, and do nothing for Apple.

It's generally best to take these elements into consideration before posting as one would do in a non Apple forum. Honesty and candor are assets that are not understood here.

Screw the antenna they need to fix the proximity sensor.

I went through *2" phones before I found one without the sensor issue. Still one problem with the sensor is that I generally, when dialling a number, put it on speakerphone until the person answers. If I take it off speakerphone and quickly put it to my ear the sensor never goes off. I either have to do it slowly or I have to "reset" it by removing it from my ear and then putting it back.

As regards the antennae, I used to use it with a case and that made the issue moot. However, I got tired of cases, be it leather or plastic covering up the beautiful design (I do not drop my phones) and have for several months used it naked. I do, however, hold the phone with my left hand and if I want to avoid problems I have to hold it with my fingertips. I adapted.

That said, the antenna clearly has problems as Anandtech's articles have shown and the sensor problem seems to be hugely variable, irrespective of the production date OR *year* of manufacture of the phone.

In regards to those saying there is no problem. Why would we (people who own the Iphone 4 and are Apple people) make this complaint falsely? Why would many of us say we love the phone but have these problems. Why would we not experience this problem with our prior phones.

You don't have a problem so it does not exist. I owned a Ford Pinto and never had a problem with it. I owned a G4 wind tunnel but it never made any noise for me. Must have not been true. Both these statements are true but the thought never crossed my mind to disbelieve the problems others where having.

Exactly. Some of us just managed to find an iPhone 4 that doesn't have too many problems. :D

Well why would we who don't have a problem state that falsely as well?

There are reasons such as cognitive dissonance. However, all it takes is some people having the problem for there to be a legitimate problem - the existence of some who get lucky doesn't mean much.

I live in an area with really poor coverage. So yeah, I've experienced many dropped calls. Still love my iPhone but you better believe that I'll be switching to Verizon once my contract is up.

And the antennae issue is real. It's just a design flaw. To say "well you are holding it wrong" is BS, people, c'mon. If you have even a shred of knowledge about product design you know that statement is BS.

I thought they relocated the antennae for the white iPhone? Which IMHO is equivalent to admitting there is a design flaw LOL

I think most people with this problem have no issue with you are anyone else stating your phone is ok. It's the "my phone is fine so this antennae/proximity problem is overblown, a lie ,or does not exist statements that are irritating.

Actually the real problem stems from Apples success. They can get away with what others could not. Steve abuses it all the time.

It will be interesting to see just how many years it will take Apple to learn how to build a good phone.

Hi,

One pf the first things I checked out when I received my ip4was the death grip, and true to the reports when you bridge the gap on the antenna band the signal drops.

Im right handed so im not affected quite as much.

Resolved by using a rocketfish silicone bumper.

To be honest I would use a bumper with or without the signal drop issue anyway.

My ip4 actually holds onto signal better than some of my previous handsets.

In regards to the view that some defend their handset/product to death well Its natural to defend ones own opinion but thats all it is...... an opinion.

Well I agree with you and something3153 then. There obviously is an issue-anyway I was always sure the next model won't have the same attenna, I'll bet money on that.

People, there are always phones with problems and it also depends on the reception. Just because some had those problems, I believe it's not Apple's fault, since I own a 3G, 3GS and 4 and never had reception issues, ever!

If you have problems, go to the store you bought it from and ask for a replacement, because pointing fingers and not being right is wrong.

I never bought the iPhone 4 because of the antenna issues. I was eligible for an upgrade and ready to buy. But once I heard of the antenna issues. I had to test it out myself. Surely, all friends phones and iPhones in apple stores all had the antenna issue when you bridge the gap on the left side of the phone with your skin. It would go from full on 4-5 bars to 1. To me it was more of a moral issue that Apple would sell such a product with such a blatant design flaw, and only to tout the very design of where that flaw is in the presentation keynote. I'm crossing my fingers for a redesign of iPhone 5 to get rid of the antenna issue in iPhone 4... but then again, maybe I shouldn't, because crossing fingers while holding your phone may cause antenna issues with iPhone 5.

I've had my iPhone4 for more than a year now and I've never dropped a single call, not even on somewhat remote islands. If you get dropped calls, blame your operator instead.

A bumper is a good idea simply for protecting the phone in case you drop it, which you will most likely do at one point. There are so many bumpers and cases around you'll most likely find one you like.

I've never had a problem, and I have had my phone nude since December. People often ask me about it and try to have a dig but to get the signal to drop I have to completely wrap my hand around the bottom, which would be completely impractical to make a call holding it in such a way. So I hold it in the same way I have always held all my other phones.

This is my third phone. The first one had the antenna problem plus a bad home button. I took it back and got a new one. The second one would stop recognizing the sim card. Took it back and got a new one. This one has a bad proximity sensor problem. I have it in a case so the antenna is not a problem anymore. I was hoping the software updates would fix the proximity problem. I'm updated to the newest IOS and it's still not good. I have learned to live with it. Funny thing is, the first phone did not have the proximity problem. The second one didn't work long enough for me to check it out.

Before this, I had a palm 650 smartphone. I didn't have a data plan on it. Very rear for that phone to drop a call. Without the case, my Iphone, in my house, will drop calls. The Palm, used in the same spot in the house, didn't. That's how I judge that it is real problem (for me).

All that being said. I really like the phone. My wife has a 3G, and she loves it. She has witnessed my problems and doesn't want to upgrade to a 4 yet, although, she loves the speed of the 4 :)

With all honesty, I do have a slight problem with mine. If I have really weak service and touch the "dead spot" I will drop to no service. Having my huge hands doesn't really help the situation, but I deal with it.

Sorry to hear that, Like I said, some have problems, some don't. I was real lucky with my both 3GS and 4, no problems whatsoever and love them both! My previous phones rarely had problems too, since I updated their firmware too, but all in all, I stand by what I said because I never had problems. The ones who have or have had have their opinion, and I respect that :)
