Yea, there have been reports that 3nm TSMC is not ready for high volume production until eo year 2022, so not for the next iPhone, so, 4nm would the the step in between…
And yes, it’s naming conventions mostly and Intel is going into the Angstrom nomenclature already…

Dang, was hoping to pick up an M2 Max using 3nm next autumn or winter. You think the performance and battery life are good now...

Yeah, articles referencing nm process should have a disclaimer saying it's just a generation name and not referring to a physical dimension.
While true, 99+% of the folks reading wouldn’t understand physical dimensions either, and the entire semiconductor industry is referring to these node names, so unless something changes there, why should articles refer to some other names or “disclose”??

More efficiency... I thought that wasn't a given? I thought about a decade ago we got to the point where smaller features was leading to more leakage

Nice! It’s just getting smaller and smaller. Even more space for the battery.
Smaller nodes does not mean smaller chips, they will stay the same or even grow cause more functionality is offered, requiring more transistors thus little impact to overall chip size

Just imagine when data is transferred over the internet using quantum entanglement. Instant transfer of data to a device. Waiting for downloads will be a thing of the past.

There is very little that can get me excited about new iPhones going forward apart from folding design. Seeing the new folding Samsung phones shows me that they are the future, we just need someone to work out the kinks such as thickness when folded, visible seam in the middle of the screen, etc.

The seam is a feature, its how you know where to fold it
