if it does run Mac OS on a A18 chip I wonder what the lifetime expectancy is... but also it would mean that the current M1's can be supported a lot longer than any previous intel chips?

I don’t think there should be concern with A18 chip because it won’t have the overheating problem that the 12” intel MB had, unless the new MB has a design flaw with the chassis. Given the several performance woes of the 12”, I am confident that Apple has made sure not to repeat course with the new MB. I think the biggest stumbling block with the new MB is going to be the typical fat margin Apple price. Couple that with the false expectation from YouTubers and Apple nerd sites, as is the case anything that doesn’t have “Pro” in the name, and the new MB will already have 2 strikes against it in the eyes of many potential buyers who prefer strangers do their thinking for them. The latter is going to happen no matter what. What I hope we don’t see if the former, as Apple could have a real hit on their tech hands if the price is well under the price of the MBA.

Agree!

The lower cost of putting in "iPad guts" into a MB is a fantastic idea!

Less heating, less parts, no need for fans, etc....

It should outlast a typical MBP or MBA!

As for acceptance, I can see the "Pro" nerds will say awful things about the A18 MB.

Just like the recent release of the 17 Air which a lot haters stated disparging & negative comments about Apple's release of a thin, light, durable iPhone.

Time to find your Flak jacket. There is definitely going to be incoming mortar rhetoric and passive aggressive grenades tossed towards anyone showing interest in and or buying the boring, subpar new MB.

Yes, many people will judge it on their needs (or what they think they need), not the needs of the purchaser.

I have higher end devices where I have a need for it, and low end where I don't. I'm really interest in the cheap MacBook. It won't have anywhere near the power of my M4 Pro Mac Mini, but I don't plan on using the MacBook for the intensive parts of my work. Many people won't have those high end needs at all. Not worrying so much about carrying around a much more expensive laptop will be a positive to some.

I did a longer rendered update for my MacBook concept with the new colours somewhat based on todays rumours. I'm sorry that pink may not be an option!

Main reason why I never got a macbook in the past was due to the price point. I don't need the highest end chips and stuff. I just browse the internet, do basic tasks like minor photo editing, answer emails, some very light gaming.

Agree & same here - have many high end Macs for different missions....

Love my current but aging 12" i5 Macbook - perfect for lightweight travel internationally and it's my media source while on a long flight.

If this new MB sporting the A18 comes out, I will be the first to grab it - hoping it will have at least 16GB of RAM for AI....

New colors looking very nice indeed, but I would pretty much bet against them doing the 2 shades anodization, trying to keep manufacturing costs as low as possible.

I think your renders look great with the paler keyboards, but could be a little more than Apple is willing to take on.

You're very correct about the two stage anodization! The same thought did cross my mind as I was specifically removing things like magsafe to make it more budget focused. I just quite liked the keyboard tray having a different colour and - err - I wondered how many people would actually notice.

Someone suggested that the lid and body could be different colours, which would somewhat achieve the same two-tone quality, maybe I should try that.

Loving the color choices !

Intentionally mis-matching the colour of the bezels and keyboards is diabolical of Apple. 😉

I guess they did it with the base iPad but its keyboard was optional. I never expected it on the same actual device. I can instantly imagine some company selling black key skins.

Still, it comes in pink and is $599. It'll sell fantastically. All the reviews will undoubtedly be praising it the same way they did the M4 mac mini.

I ordered the citrus Macbook.

I use a an M4 MBA, but took advantage the Mac Mini Black Friday deals and a Studio Display deal on Woot to upgrade my setup at home. I’m really only using the MBA for travel now. I’d feel better about travel and couch browsing with the Neo, just as I enjoyed the rMB (bought in ‘21 on eBay). Something about taking a $1k+ device where it can get beat up makes me nervous,

I disagree. The surround of the display is being seen as part of the display, just like on an iPhone, iPad or existing MacBooks and appears black.

The keys however are colour matched to the chassis of the laptop.

Yeah I understand where you're coming from, I guess it's just unexpected because it's the first product they've ever made with colour matched the keys. It doesn't help that the very first image I saw was the silver one - white keyboard and black bezels - which re-enforced to me that they intentionally did this to to upsell some people to an Air.

I think the blue one at least in the product shots feels the most harmonious. The harsh lighting they had in the demo spaces didn't do them any favours, the pink one looked white and the keyboards all looked washed out, even the blue. They could have gone a bit harder with the aluminium colours (well at least the pink) perhaps they're playing it a little safe.

I do like that citrus colour though!
