Yeah. "Apple can do great things" but they are best at propaganda. Apple has actually followed Samsung lead here but if you read tech news one would think that Apple made a "revolutionary" innovation here. Samsung put low-power sensor hub from Atmel in Galaxy S4 way ahead of Apple and for exactly the same reasons (more information here) and nobody payed attention.

Sensor hubs are nothing new in smartphones, my note 2 from a year ago has one, its just apple marketed and evidently utilized the sensor hub to provide a better experience rather then just throw one in.

Apple just do what they do best. Take an existing idea, refine it to a comfortable user experience, rehash it as something new and revolutionary and sell it to the masses.

That being said, it's not belittling apple, far from it, what they're doing takes a lot of hard work. To often I see great inventions made only to be shelved due to poor execution or being ahead if their time. What apple does should be commended.

Nope.
A constantly scanning phone will drain by up to a 1/3rd
Most people that complain about poor battery life should be complaining about bad network signal. I was on 02 3g in the Uk and it was shocking. On EE LTE and I am getting at least 2 hours more a day.

WiFi scanning is also a big drain in the scheme of things

"Only a few people use exercise apps."
What you mean to say is "I don't use exercise apps because I am geek"

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE USE THEM!!! It's massive industry. Everyone I know uses them. Cycling apps, Running apps.

I suspect the dynamic wallpaper and motion wallpaper might suck 1% max.

1) I am never in an area without 4G.

2) I turn wifi off when I'm done using it.

3) I'm 170 pounds, 5'10'' and naturally toned. I don't use exercise apps. I also actually do exercise too, because *play on words here* I'm not a nerd; who would need an exercise app to get outside and be healthy.

4) Interesting that that's the case for you, but as far as I know (I'm in college) no one uses them.

But with everything you've said, thanks for trying to appease me with all those situations that don't apply to me. Next time you think that everyone's conditions is the same as your own, don't be a jack ass about it also.

I didn't right away, because I'm a sucker for cheap 3D effects like that. I swear I spent a good half hour doing nothing but tilting the screen around.

...but the moment I killed the effect, iOS7 started performing exactly like iOS6. All it took was just changing that one thing, and suddenly I'm liking the update a helluva lot better.

Yeah dude, that's a big effect lol. I'm glad you like it. My gf updated and immediately hated it. After a couple days she's going to switch back (at least for a while). I know one of my friends also can't stand it. Too much white, and also the pastel theme.

But it seems like it's a great update and actually has better battery life if not very similar than before. I'll be honest I'm probably going to jailbreak and get rid of the theme after I see what some other dev's have come up with. Might even be an iOS6 theme for iOS7 ;)

I'm sick and tired of all the straw men who say EVERYTHING Samsung has ever done bad because of the obvious bad things they have done.

Wait... nobody said that.

Lots of people upset at these straw men all the same :)
…You don't seem to know what the phrase "straw man" means.

Cue fanboys who will buy the iPhone despite the fact that it has Samsung-made parts and then bash Samsung endlessly using pejoratives like "Scum$sung" in 3,

2,

Here you go: samedung meeee-too copy-cat no life 'innovate'-what-I-see-has-already-been-done company.

Next samedung innovation? Convergence of colors: galaxy gold.

Hmmm....designed by Apple, built by Samsung. Is that the A7 chip or the Galaxy line?

Both.

The whole Samsung v Apple, Android v iOS debate is really quite stupid to be honest and is really just a way for fanboys to show how blinkered and stupid they are. I am a lover of technology and have no blind loyalty to either side. Both companies make fantastic products that appeal to different kinds of people. You just have to choose which one meets your needs.

My wife and I have lots of Apple products (iMac, Macbook Air, 2 iPad's) as we love the beauty and seamless integration of them. However, when our iPhone 4 contract was up for renewal, we didn't think the 4S was worth upgrading to so we decided to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3. Our thinking was that in the event that the iPhone 5 was a must buy, we could sell the S3 on for more money than the 4S. I must admit that it took a day or two to get used to Android and not being able to use iTunes to back everything up etc. but after we got used to it, we both fell in love with the S3 and decided that for our needs, it was a much better phone than the iPhone so never did upgrade to the 5. My biggest concern on the S3 was that it would be too big but honestly, once you go to the bigger screen of the Samsung, you're never going back to the small screen of the iPhone......

Anyway, I then upgraded to the S4 and again, I love it. The technology in the phone, the fact that you can install a micro SD card, replace the battery etc. was what won me over. Android is also now very stable, smooth and a much better OS than iOS is for those people like me that like to play around and customise things. I'm an IT guy by trade so Android brings out the inner geek in me. I love the widgets, the customisation settings etc. etc. I was also quite surprised to find out that the music player quality with Poweramp on the Samsung blows the iPhone away. You can customise all the equaliser settings and with a decent pair of headphones, the quality of sound is amazing. I'm surprised nobody ever mentions this. I know you can do some of these things with jailbreak but it's not the same. However, I also have an iPad with iOS 7 and for me, this is perfect as I use my iPad for surfing the net, watching movies and reading books. Would I buy an Android tablet? No as I don't need all the customisation options for how I use my tablet as it's for a very specific purpose whereby on my phone, I love to tinker.

Now, my wife has had a love hate affair with Android. She loves it's customisation but hates the fact that it's not so simple to use as iOS. She's constantly asking me to show her how to do stuff and gets frustrated that she doesn't know how to copy photos into our iPhoto gallery, sync music etc. which is so easy on the iPhone. Therefore, I have been thinking about whether to buy her an iPhone 5S to make her life easier so that she can just 'sync' and be done with it.

This is one of the great things about competition....we as consumers can pick and choose the products that we feel best suit our needs. Different products are better for different people. Would I recommend a Samsung S4 to my mother? No. I'd tell her to go buy an iPhone. Both are great phones but both are actually aimed at slightly different audiences and can happily co-exist. Hell, the competition makes for better choice for us consumers and avoids a monopoly situation which would be bad for all!!!

Chipworks site is "offline" due to traffic.

Do we know what color 5s they tore down?

I wonder if TSMC and Samsung are both making A7 chips and maybe the gold phones have the TSMC chips which could be why their supply is more constrained...

Just a wild theory...

Give me a break! Samsung is only manifacturing what Apple have designed and is milking Apples money. Gee.... the world must be a better place now.

Samsung is still a shady company and it will be for a long time.

If you thought Samsung made just about everything, bet you didn't know they also make fracking cranes too! The question is, what doesn't Samsung make?

Samsung Construction is one of the largest developers in the world. They have built many famous skyscrapers including tower 2 of the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

All copied from Apple, notice the sharp corners on the building? Obviously copied from the Macbook designs

You have no idea what your talking about.Samsung and arm worked close together building the big little arch and apple hired Samsung's head engineers to help them built the chip.

The fab plant also is built around the whole process

There is a simple difference here - software. Apple has added CoreMotion to iOS meaning any 3rd party dev can use the sensor array provided by the M7 without much battery drain. There are a ton of developers targeting only iOS that will find innovative ways to use this hardware.

Samsung on the other hand added this to their phone, added a crappy pedometer app and called it a day. No third party devs will take advantage of it, so no services like Nike+, FitBit, Moves, etc. which will eventually get support on iOS. There are zero developers targeting Samsung Galaxy S4 specific android.

So basically the feature will be used by a few, and forgotten on the S5. The same thing happened to the fingerprint sensor included on the Motorola Atrix. Mediocre hardware, mediocre software, forgotten years later.

No.

Try critical thought.

If they make NOTHING you want & you own NONE of their products... What could you POSSIBLY have to complain about?? You haven't been subjected to them AT ALL. What kind of a weirdo would complain about somebody ELSE'S things.
"Damn, I hate my neighbor's Jaguar. I mean, I don't own one... never would. Have no interest in them. Have ZERO experience with them. Anyways, I'm going to go post my hatred for Jaguar & complain about their shoddy craftsmanship (that I've NEVER experienced) on a Jaguar forum."
You do realize how stupid that sounds, yeah?

You have two different but similar issues here. I'll use your Jag as an example.

1. "I don't own one... never would. Have no interest in them. Have ZERO experience with them." as you said. In this frame of mind you are 100% correct.

2. "I really want one but at their current price point or current feature set, or something else is just tipping me over the edge so I can't buy one but I hope they fix these issues so I can buy one." This is constructive criticism. And something companies look into as they expand their marketshare.

I think you see the difference here.

Or Apple is Samsung's depending on how you look at it. Sure, Apple has the popular product that use the chips, but Samsung makes the chips that make Apple's popular products go.

You'd think that if they could find someone else to do it, they would. But they keep delaying the transition...and delaying it...and delaying it.

A lot of the animosity comes from the lawsuits, I'm sure. Samsung has been a reliable supplier for Apple for years. I think it got personal with Steve Jobs. Tim Cook wasn't about to end the lawsuits, particularly when his counsel rightly told him Apple had a winning case.

At the end of the day, we don't know Apple's plans. TSMC is rumored to be making the A8. Maybe Apple is planning a transition. Maybe they used negotiations with TSMC to get a better deal with Samsung.

Here's some good advice. Enjoy the product(s) you use. Regardless of who makes them or what parts are inside. If the product works for you and you enjoy it - let that be the end of it.

Seriously.

I really don't trust sam$ung. They'll probably put crap components in there to get people on $4(see what I did there?)

Was mostly a joke. I'm sure samsung will put the correct parts in, but they're a competitor. So it's just not a good idea to have your competitor manufacture your parts.

That might be hard since some doesn't makes screens and to date chips. Samsung, LG and others are indeed competition but also good suppliers.

RE: Samsung

Samsung was the main focus of a DRAM cartel which was in operation between 1 July 1998 and 15 June 2002. It involved a network of contacts and sharing of secret information, mostly on a bilateral basis, through which they coordinated the price levels and quotations for DRAMs (Dynamic Random Access Memory), sold to major PC or server original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the EEA. DRAMs is a common model for "dynamic" semiconductor memories for personal computers (PCs), servers and workstations.

In late 1999/early 2000 I worked for Apple when we were releasing the first generation iBooks. We sold out of them the first week and could not fill orders for the next few months. Samsung claimed at the time it was due to a Taiwanese earthquake which killed more than 1,700 people and injured more than 100,000, which dried up the DRAM supply. It turns out that was not the case. Samsung used this disaster to put a world-wide choke hold on DRAM prices

Six years later in October 2005, Samsung pleaded guilty to fix the price of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. Samsung was fined $300 million, the second largest antitrust penalty in US history. They also paid hundreds of millions of dollars to other countries in their lawsuits as well.

If you want to support a company who uses deadly global disasters to gouge international companies and their consumers then by all means support them with blind eyes and mouths open. Plus I shouldn't have to mention they have had to pay millions of dollars to other countries for violations of labor rights laws and hiring children.

But then again it's all just business, right…
