it was a combination of things. first, someone (prob a combo of a few hedge funds) were selling large chunks of the nasdaq qqq, so a ton of shares hit the market. also, an analyst came out with weak forecasts for BIDU (high flying chinese google) and thus everyone applied the "sell now, ask questions later" logic. huge sell off, then once people realized that nothing really had happened except the BIDU news, people started to pile back in at a sharp discount.
