Would be interesting to see how the factories used by other companies compare.

Maybe Samsung/HP/Dell/HTC.. would like to invite journalists to a tour of their factories?

I wonder if this will uncover anything. I doubt it, seems like it causes a big enough stir to get ratings but not provide any more detail than we could get from a website like this.

Also I agree with others - uncover Apple, but do it to Walmart and all the other big players that have shops in China.

Sounds like Iraq and North Korea tours to me. This won't reveal much, other then how much the employees LOVE working for apple and sing songs while they work praising the work environments, benefits and pay. LOL

Well I think the shot in this preview of workers running to get a chance to audit for a job at foxconn doesn't lie.

Pretty much.

This should be American employees. (I know the cost argument..just saying...) What was the last Apple product that was assembled in the USA?

Already seen the report, have you?

Nothing like an open mind.

Absolutely nothing...

No one is blaming Apple, but if Apple knows what's going on and still contracts Foxconn then it is a major concern for Apple buyers, stock holders and so forth. They are the most popular tech company, and that title will come with more responsibility in human rights and the environment.
Especially with Apple's huge profit-margins and cash lying around!!!

It sure doesn't look like the horrible working conditions that some people seem to think it is.

For a U.S. middle-class worker, it doesn't look like a fun job, but it's just ignorance to think that workers in poor countries can just jump to U.S.-level wages and conditions.

I like how the media tries to point to Apple and make people blame Apple. You can blame Apple for using Foxconn, if there are strange work practices, but you can blame a bunch of other major electronics people as well. Apple doesn't own Foxconn, it pays them to make the product.

There is this ignorant perception that Apple manages, owns, controls, and whips slaves down in the Foxconn building. If you follow the media, you'd think Steve Jobs is resurrected and eating the food denied to Foxconn people by their evil Apple overlord.

Hey. Work laws are different in different countries. Get used to it. This isn't McEarth.

How very true! And the same people that complain about the working conditions would not be willing to pay $2,500 for an iPad...because it would cost that much or more if it were manufactured in the U.S.

According to the video, there are lots of people who have traveled to Foxconn just to get a chance to work at the factory and make $1.50 a day. The pay must be competitive in that part of the world, otherwise the people wouldn't be lining up to work there. Who am I to judge them?

It's common knowledge that China has a bargain priced labor market. They can mass produce high quality products at a low price. You blame Apple for looking for the best place to manufacture?

If you know the cost argument, then what are you saying? They should pay people $10 an hour to put components together?

This is a damage control puff piece. Abc is owned by Disney, Bob Iger is on the apple board. (Steve was also on the Disney board and the largest share holder).

This will not have any damning info on apple or foxconn. This will show it in a positive light.

This won't be like a video version of the NPR report.

When was the last time you saw prospective factory workers in the USA have even 10% of the enthusiasm shown in this video?

Maybe the last product was made around the same time.

Gotta love that sweet smell of cheap labour whenever you open an Apple product.

No really, the smell is outstanding. It could almost rival that 'new game' smell.

Then begin investigating every single major corporation in the world as they have all likely had an employee kill themselves. You're nitpicking.

Um, no I am not. Save for the animal lovers that put the condition of animals over that of humans I agree with putting more eyes on these corporations. Especially if their workers are killing themselves within short time spans, or having anything suspicious going on.

Such as this poster said.

Or you can just live in a bubble never caring too much about what goes on outside of your house.

the processing facilities of a subcontractor who is processing chicken, cattle, pork for any big meat companies in the US market

or any of the subcontractors who are making toys for walmart, costco, target, etc for the US market

or any subcontractors who are picking your fruit and veggies that you eat every day

or any of the subcontractors who makes your clothing

...let alone the other computer manufacturers

if this is something you want Apple to feel "shame" about or get "blame", look in the mirror

There wasn't this attention on Dell, HP, IBM, or any other manufacturer and still isn't when it should be on the industry as a whole, not one company.

Agreed! But as others have said, putting Apple in the title will bring more attention.

why isnt there this same level of scrutiny of america's chicken farms?

Glad to see you care more about chickens than people. There hasn't been a large number of humans committing suicide at chicken farms.

I hope Nightline talks about the quality of life. Making $1.78 an hour seems about right, but how are they living?

There are more people per thousand committing suicide in the GENERAL U.S. POPULATION and CERTAINLY in Detroit after the auto manufacturers' failures closed down most of area communities. Perhaps you should do the math before following the press blindly. Our founding fathers believed a free press would initiate citizens to become educated FURTHER not to blindly follow the latest iStory. What a disgrace we have become.

I have to say, knowing how much Apple charges for their products, I am disgusted that they hire w/ a company like Foxconn that only pays it's employes $1.50 an hour. As much as I enjoy my Apple products, it makes me think twice about buying another.
People here would be even more excited about Apple as a company if they knew that the products were made right here in the USA. It would certainly help our economy too.

:apple:
Made in the USA

Looks awesome and has a great ring to it.

Is there a scandal I missed about poor working conditions and pay for chicken farm workers?

Or wait, did you just imply that a Chinese laborer and a chicken, about to be killed for our dinner, should be treated equivalently?

You and a few others completely miss the point about the chicken farm comment. I do not believe the poster of that comment was implying that chickens are as important as chinest labor workers. Yes, chickens live in brutal conditions, but it goes beyond just that. The industry providing you with the grub you stuff down your piehole on a daily basis is one of the filthiest and profit is the only thing important...not what you eat, what's actually in your food, or how it gets to your dinner plate. It's a good sign of times that people want to dig deeper into how their electronics are made but not their food.
