Although this affordable "MacBook Neo" will likely be priced the same as the iPad Air, it will resemble the base iPad.

I'm afraid that, it will be
sRGB color, not P3 wide color,
12MP TrueDepth camera, not 18MP Center Stage front camera (maybe it is),
no True Tone.

And I'm afraid there won't be
Ambient light sensor,
"keyboard backlighting" OMG!

I hope I'm wrong, but I would have expected at least iPad Air performance.

Do you think this could be used as a second computer? I usually have my PC case on my desk, but sometimes I want to be mobile.

I may have exaggerated a bit, sorry, but my expectations for Apple are inconsistent... 🙂

I mean, we'll find out tomorrow. An A18 or A19 would be plenty snappy for many users, I wouldn't be super disappointed. If the price is right, those compromises aren't too terrible for the average consumer looking to do email and Facebook on their MacBook.
Is it good to access and work on a web server through Chrome (or Safari) for web coding?

Well yes.

You can do that just fine on a base M1 and the A18 Pro is faster than that. It will have limited multithread performance so your compiles may take a little longer.
I know, but many people say it's only for students. And I'm afraid Apple is focusing too much on fun instead of making it like the old Macbook. Of course, these may be exaggerated things.

It's guaranteed it'll come in the 8/256 config as the MBA has been rounded up to 16/512. A clear line in the sand between the posh laptops and the el cheapo notebooks for the peons.
I generally work on web development. I use browser developer tools a lot, and I don't think they're available on the iPad.

I don't consider this my main computer, but rather a secondary and mobile device. We'll find out tomorrow anyway.

And what does "only for students" even mean?
Probably if you're not a student then don't get one? That is, if you're enrolled as a student then get one. If you get one and you're not a student then you're an outlier. Then you should either become a student (enroll in your local community college for a single class is enough) or return the Neo to Apple. When they ask why, tell them you're not a student.

My final wish
  • ~2.2 lbs (1kg)
  • A18 Pro (actually really hope it is A19 Pro)
  • At least 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage
  • At least 2 USB-C Ports
  • Retina display
  • ~$749
The biggest wish is the weight. If it isn’t significantly smaller/lighter than the MBA I really won’t have any interest. I’d just continue to pay more for a MBA as the other features it has would offset any price savings at least to me.

"Why are you returning this laptop?"

"I am a student of life. Turns out that's not in the terms and conditions of the Apple Education Store."

I would be thrilled with this, no lie, and I'd be sorely tempted to get it to finally replace my 2016 12".

What I mean is, will it be childishly simple?
No, it will likely just be a low-spec regular Mac. You're not gonna want to use it to put together your next film project or work on your new neural network, but for most basic types of computer tasks, it'll be more than fine.

Besides, we'll find out in about 40 minutes mate.

Only 8 GB option available. Same weight as MacBook Air. Slightly lower resolution/screen size, smaller footprint (except thickness).

I am feeling sad about the weight 1.23 kg) and the RAM.

This might show the direction Apple is going in. They have been accused of being bean counters. This seems to be panning out.

The Neo must contain a lot of Air! I have no idea how they've managed to make this thicker than the Air, and the same weight as the Air, while using a 30% smaller battery... The battery is actually smaller than the 2015 Macbook (35Wh vs 41Wh). There must be so much wasted space in that chassis!

Was hoping for something super thin and light, but this ain't it 🙁

I guess I'm a peon and student for life at age 62.

I always buy the base Macs and have been going to community college for years taking aviation classes (ground school, visual flight rules, aviation weather, risk management, instrument flight, commercial and ATC comms).

I'm your perfect customer for the base A18 Macbook !
