the worthy updates will be seen in 2009 and 2011. anything in between is just a bump really.

The merom SR mbp to the current penryn mbp is a minor bump, the next montevina will be a big one and then a year later with the nehalem.

It's funny to see people that hasn't bought their MBP yet are suggesting to wait, while the people that just bought it suddenly switch side and tell people don't wait (so they will be on the same boat for the chance of not getting the redesign).

i bought my MBP last feb.. fresh from the update.
(after months of speculating, waiting, mock up designs, staying up late every monday etc) =( not healthy at all!!

it's inevitable that there's going to be an update before 2009.
i just don't think it's going to be this june.

the BUZZ is concentrated on the apple iphone.. ( isn't it obvious)
because it's the milking cow right now.

to think that the update/upgrade translate to a hardware Re-design is just wishful thinking
been there done that!
imagine the threads nov of 07 and all the mock up images....
and what did we get last feb? a little track pad and keyboard re-design

in short, if you need it now, buy now.
and there'll always be an update/upgrade no matter what!
that's TECHNOLOGY:D

I expect a new shell and some nice updates, a real update this time around rather than a bump. I am in the market for a new machine so thats what I am hoping for.

They will update MBP to the Montevina platform in June. They will also put a heavily underclocked 9600M GT in there. And the base model will have 128 MB of VRAM again. No case redesign yet.

Any source to this info?

Ohh i hope you're wrong. I'm only here for the redesign. I'll buy a memron MBP with a redesigned case anyday.

The only reason to wait for me is that a possible speedbump will be introduced with the upcomming WWDC in June. I think that when the montevina cpu's aren't introduced in june they'll be introduced later this year.

I do hope that the quadcore montevina finds it's way to the mbp in june this year. That opens my purse for a new MBP ;)

maybe a heavily underclocked 9800GT...isn't the 9600 cooler than the 8600?

Also...actually I don't care about a redesign anyway.

June update

Yeah... I reckon that there will either be a huge update or something really pithy like a small speed bump with the move to Montevina.

If the update is going to be large one I envisage a new case (which will also effect the MacBook, bringing all the mac portables into the same uniform line from consumer to portable to professional machines), and gain the same style keyboard as the MB and MBA. Which in a way will be annoying cause I don't think the black keyboard looks all that nice on the aluminium case... I have the new Apple keyboard and white on aluminium looks nicer. I think the MacBook will shed some weight and become an inch thick just like the MacBook Pro, which may become slightly smaller width and depth wise as they reduce the bezel round the edges. Also, there'll be the processor upgrade, but no graphics upgrade since they only just upgraded the graphics speeds. That is what I think will happen if they do a complete overhaul.

Maybe... just maybe... a MacBook Pro with MacBook dimensions. But unlikely.

If there is just a speed bump then yay, faster MacBook Pros in time for my birthday!

i don't think it's switching side..
and i don't agree that people are convincing others to buy now for the sole reason that they bought their MBP already and they wanted others to be in the same boat- that's just SELFISH

my recommendation, which most of the other forum members share is always:

1. Buy now if you need it NOW.
2. Wait if you don't.

we're mainly sharing our experience " been there, done that"
and to hold off for a purchase for months with no clear evidence of what you'll have next is " PATHETIC".

I put it this way for anyone considering buying one now or later.

If you want a computer now, go buy it and stop waiting. And stop regretting things and stop trying to go future proof--you can't.

If you like playing the waiting game, you will never win. I also feel this is a sign you don't need a new computer, so why bother?

the other aspect to consider is: do you want to put up with the inevitable growing pains of a 1st generation product?

as a low-intensity user who wouldn't benefit much from the proposed upgradesi in june (or later) and someone who didn't want to put up with any possible 1st gen issues of the new MBP, I opted for this current edition last month

absolutely sublime experience since then! :D

Sure your not just telling yourself that since you just bought a new macbook pro.....?;)

Haha! I guess it's hard to tell sarcasm on paper especially when you don't know it's author.

I don't really care about updates. I got mine 3 weeks before the new one came out. It was just luck that my first one was defective so I had to do an exchange one week in which gave me the second 2 week that released the Peryn machine.

I'm a buy-a-computer-when-need/want person, not a buy-a-computer-when-time-is-right.
