I'd say its nice to have the dGPU and it will be a benefit if you do get a 4k monitor. I'd say mostly though its probably not needed so much based on your stated needs

In terms of portability, 13 inch model interests me also. Maybe I'm just *sold* to the hardware specs vs my real usage. I just hate how when in an apple store, itunes album cover arts lag when using scrolling down on the 13 inch but they are smooth in the 15 inch version. I thought of the middle 13 inch model with 16gb could be nice, but it's almost $2000 with tax here...my mind is like : $2000 without a dgpu wtf!

In terms of real life usage, how much faster will a quad core be in lightroom/photoshop? Just for like exporting pictures ....calculated in terms of seconds??

Also, will Apple ever support 4k@60hz or it will only be available for their monitor or it will be for all of them???

Also, as my computer will be my only computer, sometimes a little more power is cool to have.

Thank you

There's no way they can put a dGPU in a 13" because of heat constraints, unless you can break the laws of physics.

In Photoshop/LR, there's not much difference in exporting images. However, if you run VMs and do rendering, video and audio production, you'll see a huge increase in performance with a quad-core i7 compared to a dual-core i5/i7.

My rMBP does support 4K@60Hz, but only in Windows-Boot Camp. OS X doesn't support 60Hz yet because of driver issues (I have a 2.6GHz with 750M, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD).

Quad-core will have a noticeable difference in Lightroom/photoshop, especially during actual editing. Adobe software makes good use of multiple cores... if you hate beach balls, get the quad core. I still get them after I've done extensive editing, even on the top end 15", but not nearly as much as on a dual core machine.

No, that's not what I meant. I'm just saying that if you are using it in clamshell mode connected to an external monitor the majority of the time, it won't be as big of a deal as it would if you only used the retina screen. Mine is slightly tinted, but even, so I don't mind it a whole lot.

It's sad to pay a huge premium for a laptop and have to deal with B-rated parts and corner-cutting by Apple. Really angering.

Those specs blow the rMBP out of the water....and for a lower price too...but people would rather pay more for the apple logo...that or they don't like windows/have been 'trained' to say they don't like windows hehe

Yes I think so. I hate fanboy based attitudes, buy Windows as you hate Apple, buy Apple as you hate Windows

Why do some buy Apple? Well, if you buy PC 's wisely there isn't a quality gain with Apple, IMO the biggest non fanboy reason is OSX, being an alternative to Windows. OSX is often free, its made by the makers of the hardware, its all managed in house, little or no need for AV, and if you use other Apple gear, a nice level of integration.

I agree. I am trying to move from Windows to OSX, but Apple makes it hard when retina screens made by LG have retention issues, there is the tint issue, the new MBA has a PCIe but proprietary connector so I cannot now or in the future replace the SSD myself. I read other threads of issues although to be fair I cannot compare them to what numbers have no issues.

I finally gave in and got a late 2013 rMBP 15, i7 2.3 Ghz, 16 GB ram, 512 GB SSD, dGPU model. there's no issue whatsoever.

It all depends on what you're using PS/LR for. Simple clean up, i.e., exposure, white balance, or using various plug-ins or more in-depth work.

Simple usage of either app won't really show the benefit of a quad core but using some of the filters out there, like plugins from topaz or NIK and the quad core will be faster.

But but, are you sure you really don't want to buy another laptop you never asked for?

It has all sorts of extra things, like extra screen glare, reduced color gamut, reduced viewing angles, half the battery life, a half-plastic molded case with rough edges and poor finition, slower storage, a **** trackpad, and almost no software optimized for high-res displays.

I mean, you wouldn't just buy a Mac because it's pretty would you? Since good design/build quality and technical features are well known to be mutually exclusive, the Mac couldn't possibly be better in some aspects, so you would necessarily only buy it for the glowing logo on the back. Buy a Dell, otherwise you're superficial.

PS: Please consider the McAfee Antivirus offer from Dell's website. It's really a good deal I promise.

Can I ask where you got your avatar picture and if they make it wallpaper size? I love that picture.
