yeah but at the same time it is pretty shi**y to buy something and it gets upgraded 20 days later, and you could have waited that time...

In that case, you just had unrealistic expectations. Some of us had been saying it for months; Apple was never going to introduce an aluminum-class Macbook at Macbook prices; they were always going to maintain that price separation. People here just kept repeating "$1000 Macbook Nano" to themselves over and over again, but that didn't mean it had a snowball's chance of passing. :D

I personally think that the Macbook will get updated to an Aluminium design. The reason the iMac got updated to an Aluminium design is because it's a cheaper material than plastic.

Also, all the people on these forums that say "macbooks won't get the Aluminium design because Apple want to seperate it from the Macbook pro", the iMac is a consumer line product, the Mac Mini is a consumer line product. They BOTH have an Aluminium design. The thing that will keep the seperation will be the integrated graphics, the smaller screen, the slower processors, etc.

Apple customers know what to buy when they want a Pro level laptop. They're not stupid. They don't think "oh that looks pretty, I'll buy that!"

It's amazing how obsessed with product cycles and upgrades you become when you enter the MacRumours world, isn't it?

Tell me about it, I came here a week before the SR update of the MB, been on the fence since. I was supposed to buy a MB back then... and now I'm waiting for the damn LED screen. Someone needs to give me a good kick in the behind.

Ha, very true, I've been reading the forums for a while, and I realized if I kept going to the way I was, I would never get one. But you just have to realize what it is you want, if it's likely to change soon, and how long you're willing to wait.

For ME, I'm not in a big hurry, and I really want an LED screen, so I'm willing to wait a while.

I doubt it; the MacBook is the ignored stepchild of the family....still no LED screen, still no backlit keyboard, still no decent graphics, still using plastic...

It is an entry level machine. ;)

When compared to PC notebooks of similar price (excluding the blackbook, as that is a simple color tax) the macbooks come out looking pretty good for the most part (before a dozen of you come up with 50 different notebooks that are cheaper than the macbook, please take into account weight, size, CPU speed, battery life, etc-no links to an 18 lb Dell behemoth that gets 20 minutes of battery life ;) :p). That's why the macbooks are attracting switchers like crazy these days.
I was thinking more in terms of a completely new machine. Not a refresh.

Forgive me, but I think the macbook air is that machine no? It's lighter, smaller, and all around a different product.

I think the macbook is fine. Personally I find it better than the MBP, but maybe thats just because i have a MB. I've been on my friends MBP though, and personally i just didn't notice a huge difference.

yeah for the kind of stuff I do in my MacBook a probably would not be able to tell the difference between. A mb and mbp. By the way this is my first post using my touch LOL I. Am amazed by it so so so so cool

Hey Guys. I think that the chances of upgrading to an Aluminum and LED display are huge. Apple is transitioning to more environment friendly materials all it's products, so I'm waiting.
Another thing I would be interested in having in the MB line is a multi-touch trackpad. Do you think, there is a chance to have it around may in the MB?
...Also, how big of a chance do we have to have Penryn chips in MB and MBP?

not sure about aluminum housing but LED and multi touch trackpad are highly likely.

I reckon the colour schemes of the new MacBooks will be the same as the current iPod Nanos, with the base colour and clickwheel/keyboard colour.
Maybe all Aluminium also.
Definate possibility in my opinion.

the original ibook was released in July 1999. 6 months later, February 2000 it was updated. 7 months after that it was updated in September 2000.

Case Redesign
Then 8 months later the brand new ibook was released, new case but still g3, in May 2001. Just 5 months later it was updated, in october 2001. 7 months and In May again, 2002, another updated was seen. 6 months later in November 2002 another update. Then the last g3 update came in April 2003, 5 months after the last update.

Case Redesign
October 2003 came the new g4 ibook, with a new case redesign, all be it very similar. 6 months later in April 2004 an update came. Then october 2004 came another, 6 months since the last. July 2005 saw the last ibook update, a staggering 9 months after the last update.

Case Redesign
macbook was released in may 2006. then 6 months after was updated in November 2006. Again updated in May 2007, 6 months again, and then November 2007, 6 months again.

So the original case lasted 2 years, roughly, when the new ibook was released. Then 2 1/2 years after that a new case was released again. Again, 2 1/2 after that the macbook was released.

we're now nearly into 2 years into the macbook. If you go by recent trends we should see an update of the macbook in may 2008, and a case redesign in November 2008.

just something i wanted to share, seen as alot of people have been talking about new cases for the macbooks. i don't think this is definetly what is going to happen, but just something i found interesting.

No offense to you guys^^^^ but you're asking for too much. ;)

Remember that the macbook is a consumer level machine. It won't get anything that would make it better than the macbook pro, so whatever you want to see in the macbook has to first be in the mbp.

LED backlit screens are the most likely candidate as it stands right now. However, they are still a costly part over standard screens, so it might take until later this year to see them in macbooks (the macbook air costs a lot more over a basic macbook, so that's why it can be put in there).

Multiple colors are a bit farfetched. The days of the clamshell iBook are over now I think. Apple seems to be sticking to a handful of colors, so if a color change is going to happen, my bet is that it would make the macbooks all black or all aluminum; colors like blue and red just aren't going to happen.

Aluminum casing probably won't come to the macbook line. Period. It would reduce the weight to the point where no one would consider the MBA a serious computer. For now (and likely the foreseeable future) it's going to be plastic.

Sorry to burst your bubbles. :(

I don't think it's fair to consider the upgrade from iBook to macbook a case redesign. The basic idea essentially remained the same (white and smooth with ports on the sides). Not much changed in the way of design. The blackbook certainly is a new color, but its design is also in the spirit of the iBook G4

Personally, I don't even want the Macbook to go aluminum. It's way too easy to dent and bend. I'd be happy if they'd just go back to using decent plastics in the Macbook.

iBooks were tanks. Macbooks are far too fragile, and their plastics are flawed.

So very very true. I think the Blackbook looks spectacular in comparison with the MBP. IMHO, the MBP isn't very pretty at all. I can't for the life of me understand what Apple is waiting for in terms of new type of plastic though. There's is definitively room for improvement there.

I concur. I threw my 500 mhz G3 iBook AROUND and it never skipped a beat. I guess the G3 Powerbooks were fairly well-built too.

The MBA is not a full featured notebook. So, no.

My point was that there is no space to fit a new machine in the current lineup. Where can one go? A faster, larger notebook? A slower smaller notebook? A more average notebook? All three bases are already covered.
