As had been said, Tile won't do this right now due to range, but Apple's would as the 'victims' phone would transmit onto the network the location of my AirTag.

Pretty sure they have said you will be able to turn off this feature in your phone if you don't wish to be part of the network, but I guess many will have it on to enjoy the feature.

No they won't - again it's not GPS and it's not got a mobile signal either, hell I don't think it's even on wifi. It allows you to locate a small item within a room with pin point accuracy, it doesn't allow you to stalk a girl across an entire city - although what's stopping you using a GPS tracked with a sim card for that? (Or a cheaper Android phones) those are things that could actually do it.

Yes it will allow you to track someone/something anywhere. Just like it's possible with Tile now. It's not GPS, but anytime it gets near an iPhone, that iPhone will share its location with the cloud. Tiles do this but only with phones that have the Tile app installed and running in the background so the universe of phones that will pick up a Tile is pretty small compared to every iPhone running iOS being able to pick it up and relay the location.

Works pretty much the same way, but now all iPhones can pick up AirTags instead of just phones with the Tile app installed and running.

I mean it's a pretty far fetched theory that you'd slip one of these into someone's bag when you could just follow them anyway. As mentioned a GPS tracker which would work better or an cheap/old Android phone which would also work better will probably be cheaper! But talk about an easy way to get arrested.

Another rumour on airtags... I believe that they exist the day Apple actually announces them, not sooner anymore...
Apple did the oopsie a few months ago in a support video on Youtube, they literally wrote "AirTags" in that video

It would be nice if Apple builds AirTag functionality into some items rather than make us buy a separate Airtag for them. Why not put it in the AppleTV remote and AirPod cases, etc so we don't have to then stick something else onto them? Plus it would get people introduced to using the AirTag ecosystem more often and make them more likely to buy AirTags for other things.

All seriousness, is anything more special on AirTags than what Tiles offer?
The biggest difference is that the finding software gets integrated into iOS, so that every iPhone is now an AirTag finder. Tile relies on people having the Tile app installed and running to make "Community Find" possible. Every iPhone is going to create a much bigger finding network.

That's pretty much why Tile sued Apple for anticompetitive behavior. There's no way Tile could compete with every phone having the finding software on it. Hasn't it been Rumored that Apple is going to allow Tiles to be findable with their FindMy software too? That would level the playing field for other tag manufacturers.

I'm actually thinking that may be why the Nomad case is squarish....maybe it can hold either an AirTag or a forthcoming Tile device.

The fact that it only tracks within the same room for a start...and if you're in the same room as her you could be following her anyway... It's not a GPS tracker.

As I understand it, that's incorrect.
Air Tags will use all and anyone's iPhone to create a massive network, so you could be tens, hundreds? pf miles away, and they would still be locatable via this new network.

As I understand it, as the owner of an iPhone you will have the option to opt out of allowing your phone to be part of this network.
But of course it's in everyone's interest to opt in, as it will then make AirTags far more useful.

If this is wrong, please feel free to correct me, as this is what I have heard from others so far.

Imagine I was some crazy nutter for a moment, who has an obsession with some female I saw in a club.

What I want to know, and perhaps someone can explain:
What's going to stop me from slipping one of these into the bottom of her bag whilst she's distracted and just waiting, then finding out where she lives as she drives home, and goes into her house/flat?

First of all, the kind of person who would do that, is already able to do lots of awful things without the latest technology. Second of all, the Find My code contains these text strings among others. We don't know what features they are in reference to, but they are probably relevant to your question:

  • This item has been moving with you for a while.
  • The owner of this item will be able to see its location.
  • If this item is not familiar to you, learn how to disassemble it and stop sharing your location.

Ah, that makes sense and is quite clever. If you've been "AirTagged" by someone you don't know, your phone will realize that there's a Tag you didn't personally set up that always seems to be on you or moving with you (as if it was dropped into your purse or tucked in your car). Then Apple will alert you and allow you to disable (I assume not "disassemble") it.

I guess you could still tuck it into an Android user's belongings and track them by relying on them coming into contact with iPhone users but it wouldn't be constant tracking.

I think they do mean disassemble. You won't be able to just turn off everyone's trackers on the train you're riding. You'll actually have to have the thing in your hands and either physically disable it of throw it out of the window.

I would assume you would just disable your phone from tracking it....not totally disable the device from being tracked by the owner or other people's phones. And Apple could put some logic in there that if it was traveling with both you and the owner of the device, then you wouldn't get that alert. So on a train it would probably also be in proximity of the owner's iPhone, so it wouldn't seem like someone was tracking you. And it could even be set up that if you have disabled it from your phone tracking it, if it keeps showing up near your phone by other people finding it, you could be alerted.

They already do....Every iPhone, Apple Watch, MacBook, AirPods, are in the "Find My" ecosystem already. You would then buy AirTags for things like your keychain or wallet, and I guess in this case, glasses too.

Granted the Find My system for AirPods at the moment, really sucks and can't locate them while they're in the case...

It will be a huge usability design FLAW if it doesn’t have a simple HOLE in it so that you can easily attach it to something without having to purchase a second attachment. .

Essentially when you put your laptop in "Lost" mode, it uses ultra ultra-wideband and will communicate with any other Apple ultra-wideband in range and use this device's network connection to report the location of your lost/stolen device. This is fantastic if a thief snagged your laptop and knows not to put it on a network but comes close to someone with an iPhone.
This is pretty much what Bruce Wayne does in “The Dark Knight”.

Well, except he basically got every phone to LIDAR indoor and outdoor locations to create a map of cities. Not quite the same, but there are parallels.

Anyway, carry on, citizens. 😜

Ah, this makes more sense, apologies I should have researched a bit more before jumping here to post. The shape of Nomad's key chain, my thought exactly., why square while most AirTag images I've been seeing so far are round.

But, it would be totally Apples’s standard mode of operation.

There are already products that can accomplish this. Creeps that would do this already have the tools. LOL!

Also, they could just do it the old fashion way... follow them. No technology necessary.

Honor system? 🤔
