It looks like they will do it and I’m pretty confident they won’t be advertised as anti-theft devices. Apple will prioritise personal privacy and safety over recovery of stolen items as it has in the past. You can’t give the general public the ability to track criminals without also enabling the vice versa. They *might* provide a ‘police mode’ where you could make your tag invisible to all but law enforcement agencies, but I don’t see it being likely.

In this thread pay particular attention to these three text strings in the list:
  • This item has been moving with you for a while.
  • The owner can see its location.
  • If this item is not familiar to you, learn how to disassemble it and stop sharing your location.
The first one could just mean 'relax, your wallet's in the car somewhere', but I'm not sure what else that last one could mean, other than, 'somebody could be tracking you, here's what to do'.

Interesting, thanks!

Someone could take your phone, wait outside for you to come and retrieve it and whack you over the head / rob you. You can make a bad use case for most things.

Physically assaulting someone in public is a far cry from subtly slipping someone on their person and then waiting until they are out of public view to attack. If this paranoia? Maybe? But I feel like criminals will always be criminals and not addressing obvious and easy to accomplish hacks because "you can always make a bad case" is being irresponsible.
