Hi all, today I was working on my rMBP, I wanted to take a photo of the screen and got my iPad with one hand, after several tries I finally managed to get a sharp photo and BOOM! The iPad dropped! = my hand was sweaty the iPad slipped and dropped right onto the keyboard, BUT before it landed on the keyboard the iPad hit the screen! :-(, as a result the screen started to flick and vertical lines appeared on the right side, I'm making a backup right now, I've been keeping this rMBP since February and now I will have to get it fixed at the Genius Bar, I don't know if the first year warranty covers accidentally broken LCD, any of you have experienced something similar before?, how much do you think I will have to pay for this repair?

Thanks in advance...

Just curious why the shot you post is inverted

When Apple changed my screen for flickering it cost £466 including 'hardware repair labour', that was still under warranty though so I don't know if the invoice is different if it's not covered by warranty.

It was taken with my iPad, so it is guilty!.

Since I can't find ANY cracks on the screen, you might be able to get a replacement for free ;)

The crack on the screen was notably visible if you look at the picture, but there wasn't any dent or scratch on the place, that's why I commented I believed the vibration could have caused the crack when the iPad hit the body, I don't really know… I just felt the impact when that happened, the iPad fell down on horizontal position over my rMBP.

One thing I realised was that the new screen was yellowish: the technician swapped the screen but didn't recalibrate the Color profile, the new screen was made by Samsung and the previous was LG, so I did some research on the internet and most people complained about the same yellowishness when changing the screen from LG to Samsung on their rMBPs.

I recalibrated the colour profile using the tool on "System Preferences -> Displays -> Color" to make the whites more blueish, but I realised that the profile listed as "Color LCD" is the stock profile MacOSX uses, so any new profile the user creates uses this one as a reference, that made me force the slider all the way up to turn the screen more blueish which was incorrect, so I was thinking about it and found that my rMBP was using the old LG Color profile file (.icc) and needed to tell it that the new screen was Samsung.

So I went to the path "Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays" and deleted the default Color file: in my case was named "Color LCD-00000610-0000-A00E-0000-000004280380.icc", I restarted the machine and VOILA!!!, MacOSX recreated this file for the Samsung default Color profile!, so the yellowishness disappeared!!! :).

When I had my LG screen replaced the Samsung was yellowish too and I had to calibrate it. Just read your tip and tried it, but the file Mac OS X recreated is the same old Color LCD-00000610-0000-A00E-0000-000004280380.icc. What's the name for the new Samsung one, or does the name stay the same but its simply recalibrated?

I have 15" macbook pro retina and i have apple care for 3 years and there was 2 pixels which were bright and did not display the right colours so i took it in and got it repaired haha :) i looked on receipt and it was £460 haha but it was free cause i have apple care so i paid for apple care straight off :)

Hi all again!, my rMBP is back from the Genius Bar! I'm writing right now from it

well, this repair was for free!!! :D, today I went to my Genius Bar appointment and told the technician the truth, I explained to him that I was not sure wether the iPad hit directly the screen or the crack was due to the vibration produced as the iPad landed on the keyboard, I asked him to check the keyboard as well but he told me not to worry about it because the rMBP's keyboard was strong enough, then we agreed the iPad had first hit the screen and then landed on the keyboard, I asked him about the cost and he said it would cost €600 including labour, he asked if I had any insurance I said not, fortunately they had a screen on the storage so the repair will take few hours and in the worst case within 24-48 hrs.

I went back home, then 2 hours later the technician calls and says my rMBP is ready!, but they had considered to make an exception in my case and the warranty would cover the repair!!!

When I went back to the store again to pick up my rMBP I thanked the technician for the prompt repair and asked him about why they had considered to cover the repair with the warranty, he told that his chief and the rest of the technicians were looking for visible signs of dents on the screen and the laptop's body and they didn't find any!, so they decided to cover this repair by the warranty , I don't know if in this case I was lucky but the I'm more than satisfied with Apple's costumers service!

That is awsome, glad to hear that. As some others have said, telling the truth in things like this is the best!

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. The OP got lucky and we are all happy him. In this case lying would have been obvious, but in many cases I bet it has a better average of success than telling the truth.

The old one (LG) was named as:
Color LCD-00000610-0000-A00F-0000-0000042803C0.icc

The new one (Samsung):
Color LCD-00000610-0000-A00E-0000-000004280380.icc

If you want I can upload to this forum my default .icc, and see if it works for you.

Thanks for the offer, but it's ok. I think I'll just resort to the calibration I did, which still seems to yield a better result. Plus, I once downloaded the uploaded .icc from another member and couldn't figure out how to get the system to list it in the display preferences, even though I placed it in the right folder.

I have the one-year warranty, if I got the three-year Apple care would this one cover accidental damage?, I was thinking about getting a home insurance to cover my rMBP because this one does cover accidental damage.

When I was at the Genius Bar waiting for the technician I could hear a girl next to me was explaining to other technician that her iPhone was malfunctioning of a sudden, the technician had already checked the phone in the lab and told her that they would change the logic board in the phone and would assume the cost, but they had found water inside!!!, the water sensor didn't report it but the drops were still inside the phone!, the girl didn't mention this!, technicians are not stupid!.

In the end the Color calibration is something personal, some like blueish whites some warmer whites.

There really needs to be a tech support Darwin Award for things like this.

That is too funny! "Darwin Award Insurance" - when you're not smart enough to know the difference between a good idea and a bad idea.

Seriously, though, I read through these posts and I am amazed at how people treat their expensive technology. They eat off of them, drink off of them, try to do crazy things with them. My God people, this is a $3k notebook! Try to treat it as such.

Then the enviable shock of the repair cost and belief AppleCare should include stupidity...

These posts are an endless source of astonishment.
