I spent the last year agonizing over which 30" display to get. We have all varieties at work in our design department, even the NEC wide gamut.

For proper calibration all of them, including the ACD, have to have brightness turned almost all of the way down. All except the ACD have sample flaws that clients don't notice, but the user does. This includes bad pixels, backlight bleeding around the bezel, etc.

The ACD is our client approval monitor because it has great IQ and looks like a million bucks--no display is close in sex appeal.

I just bought the ACD to go with my new (2009) Mac Pro. I expected to have to stress out over getting Apple to fix sample flaws, but I was very happy that the thing is perfect! Very close examination of backlight consistency across the screen with a solid gray wash shows a very slight variations, but not nearly as bad as the NEC which has stripes of variation across the screen on solid colors. This is typical of 30" displays and no one would ever see it on real images (like photos).

I love the ACD. It's like a piece of jewelry. The case is flawless and gourgeous. I don't play games on it but I have watched a couple of DVD movies on it and it looked great.

Also, the grittiness that plagues these matt large screens is much less than most other 30" displays. Small text over white (which looks nasty on the NEC) looks very nice.

Highly recommended!

is anybody using a 30" monitor with a macbook pro (specifically a early 2008 model with 2.2Ghz and 128mb nvidia8600) i want to know if it will have any problems pumping out the huge resolutions especially with things like playing 1080p content or some of the OS X effects. i don't game or do any pro video editing , just browsing and xcode and movies.

(sorry for highjacking the thread)

Dante - just wanted to say thanks for your intelligent and evenhanded comparisons above. I've been researching the top 30" monitors for awhile now, and found your comments very helpful.

Still torn between these two, but it helps.
