On AT&T-took a couple of tries to get it paired with my MBP via Bluetooth, but it works and I'm posting this through my tethered connection!

I got it working over the usb cable but do you have any tips for pairing a MB and the iPhone? I just cannot get the two to connect over BT!

Call me paranoid, but I'd watch your bill closely for a bit and maybe take it easy on usage. I would be fearful of this being a pass-through billing scenario similar to the way some of those paid ring tone providers used to bill people through the carriers. I know, AT&T doesn't "officially" support any tethering option so why would they have a way to bill for it, but this could be due to an obscure roaming agreement with a provider in another country.

Again, I hope I'm just being dumb & paranoid but alarms go off in my head when I see stuff like this.

theres another post outlining the actual language that you download, and the addresses all point to Cingular (pre AT&T) so i dont think its a roaming deal, i think someone just found a way to beat AT&T, Ill probably never use tethering but i must ask, is there a data cap for our AT&T plans? Im guessing this is similar to people using netshare?

There is a 5 gig softcap on our "unlimited" accounts, it's incredibly difficult though to reach that.

its a tease, unless you have prerelease itunes and a hacked carrier file those settings mean nothing

There are three ways of changing the ipcc info on your 3.0 iPhone.
1) Use the beta copy of iTunes - and a suitable ipcc file.
2) Use the *current* version of iTunes (after typing
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
into the terminal)
and finally...
3) Visit this site with Mobile safari and grab it directly onto your iPhone.

IF you go to the site with mobile safari there is no link for MMS, just settings that you are instructed to paste, well i dont have the fields to paste it in available on my phone, I wont downgrade to prerelease and i really dont know how to edit system files for itunes.

Yes but nowhere in that thread is there a way to ADD the mms settings without hacking the carrier file and downgrading iTunes. What needs to happen is mms needs to be done like tethering. Where you click a link and it adds an apn profile to your phone.

Hahaha I wish. That would make life so much easier.

WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS MEAN, PLEASE PLEASE EXPLAIN

Shh! Stop shouting! My poor virtual ears.

It means.
You find a suitable ipcc file. And install it on your phone by option clicking "restore" in iTunes.

"But the ipcc file is all greyed-out" you say.

Ah, but if you open Terminal (the command line)
and enter the command "defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE"
and then restart iTunes.
Then it won't be greyed-out any longer.

I don't mean to be funny, but why don't you just use the website method? That is the point of this thread.

Go to http://help.benm.at/help.php
and click on your provider to inject the ipcc staight into your iPhone's brain.

It's easier than messing around with iTunes. And the author is working on MMS settings too.

How do you actually start to tether though?? I went to the site and installed the new profile (i have had the adhoc profile before) but now what??? I went to bluetooth and tried to find devices, but it just kept spinning..

So once the profile is installed, how do you go about attaching to your macbook?
