Sad, he was only 50.

Comedian Bernie Mac died at Northwestern Memorial hospital early Saturday morning, according to Sun-Times Columnist, Stella Foster. He was 50.

Though the cause of death has not been confirmed, Mac had been hospitalized recently for pneumonia. Foster said that she received calls early Saturday morning from a close friend of the Mac family, confirming the reports of Mac's death.

This may not be true. No other news service has carried the story, and I also found this

Imagine this: Bernie Mac’s publicist has been forced to issue statements denying that Bernie Mac died.

Truth be told, Bernie is in “very, very critical condition” resulting from pneumonia. You can imagine that news in itself is difficult for the family to deal with… Now imagine reading headlines like, “Is Bernie Mac dead?” which is the headline at the Post Chronicle. I almost don’t want to give them the backlink because, from their text, they know that he’s alive… However, they’re tempting people with a false headline. argh.

Bernie Mac’s publicist, Danica Smith said. “It is a very horrible rumor… It is absolutely untrue. Nothing has changed from yesterday.”

ABCs NY station reported it. It's what prompted me to search online for a story.

Hollywood power broker Bernie Brillstein dead 8/8/2008, 2:07 p.m. CDT
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bernie Brillstein, a Hollywood talent agent, manager, producer and studio head who over half a century guided the careers of "Saturday Night Live" comedians and helped package a slew of TV and movie hits, has died. He was 77.

Unless they got the wrong Bernie

No confirmation other than a close friend?

CHICAGO (AP) -- A publicist says Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and comedian Bernie Mac has died at age 50.

Publicist Danica Smith says Bernie Mac died early Saturday at a hospital in the Chicago area of complications due to pneumonia.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but he had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently had been hospitalized and treated for pneumonia.

Mac had starring roles in "Ocean's Eleven," "Bad Santa," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers."

The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show," which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.
