Was listening to the ATP podcast and Casey Liss mentioned that when he got his bill, his $10 Apple Watch addon turned out to be around $17, including taxes, fees and surcharges.

Has anybody seen this on their bill or in their account?

I don't know who his carrier is, so not sure if that's a carrier specific problem, but I doubt it.

Just curious b/c if a $10 plan really turns out to be that much, I would be hesitant to activate it.

Thanks.

WOW,
color me shocked. I'm generally not naive to not think about fees and what not, but for some reason I hadn't even considered that with the apple watch

It is not so much the Carrier but where you live. Lot's of chances to add additional charges. State, County, City, etc...

I would say the lowest is going to be 12-13 with 17 being on the high end.

There was another thread about this earlier this week. In that case the first bill showed that much tax because of the one-time activation fee. Outside of that it was running $12-$13.

Actually that depends on what plan you have, it is not an across the board for all T-Mobile customers!

Dave
True, but I’m pretty happy with my taxes-included T-Mo plan. Even if it’s just smoke and mirrors that I don’t have to see the itemized fees.

I think the TMobile One plan which is the only supported plan for Watch acts this way with taxes included

Watch is supported on other types of plans, not just the T-Mobile One plan. For example, I have simple choice and was able to add the watch for $10. Granted I haven’t gotten my first bill yet so I’m not sure what the taxes and fees will be.

That’s because you choose to stay on an older plan. T-Mobile doesn’t force you to move to the newer plans, even if it were to save you money. That choice is yours to make. So don’t blame T-Mobile if you are still paying taxes and fees.

That said, all new accounts are automatically added onto T-Mobile One with taxes and fees included.

Still. $10 or so a month just to leave your phone at home (which really, how many are actually doing that) and have shorter battery life.

AT&T forgot to apply the promo on my bill. I ended up paying $44 more for Sept 22 - Oct 31, so there is a partial bill for Sept. I have to call them up to add the promo credit. Also the tax and fee seems to be higher than normal. I don't know what's up with that either. I think I am going to stop the service after the 3 month free expires.

Not necessarily on purpose (sometimes I forget), or out for a run. I will leave my phone in the car if I just need to run into the store or something. Relatively small cost for the ability to do it, and have a “backup” cellular device.

They will credit you back the amount within 3 months or so. Not immediately.

Just got my first ATT bill for the LTE Apple Watch. In addition to the $10 monthly monthly fee and $25 activation fee, there is almost $9 worth of taxes and fees. I called AT&T, and after having to speak to a supervisor, I was told that half of the "taxes and fees" are related to the activation fee and half of those "taxes and fees" will be a recurring monthly fee, bringing the cost of the watch to over $15 a month, and the actually activation to over $30. That's beyond absurd! I'm having a difficult time believing it's true.

After reading this thread and speaking with a few friends that have the LTE. I'm getting the GPS version. I honestly think for me at least, the LTE isn't worth the extra $12 to $15. I am NEVER without my phone and will probably only use if ever the LTE function of the watch.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I really think this should have been a $5 addon by the carriers, possibly yielding a $7 to $7.50 final cost with taxes and fees.

I’m contemplating returning my LTE and getting the GPS, but the LTE does have double the memory, the ceramic back and the Sports Loop (I got the Nike with the Sports Loop). All those things may be worth the extra $70. I would just forego activating a data plan for the watch.

For me, it’s $10 a month to have a lifeline when I’m running outside, alone, and from November to March, in the dark. My choice of directions are left into a small city with one of the highest homicide rates in the state, or right into a sparsely populated area with woods on both sides of the road, no businesses I could run to, and bears. Worth it to me.

Not exactly that simple with AT&T: Bill Credit: Account and service on your line must remain active to get up to two credits ($30 service + $25 activation) w/in 3 bills. No activation credit if already waived. Offer Limits: Max. of 1 activation credit/waiver per device. One credit offer per eligible Apple Watch Series 3 activation. May not be combinable with other offers, discounts, or credits.

Thats the way I'm approaching it. I also think having the LTE flexibility may be useful at some point during the two or three years I expect to own this watch, and may also help resale. But that's all really just a shot in the dark.
