I think it's funny that after all of these years of people using computers as part of their everyday lives, this question still comes up. HDD and system vendors measure HDD capacity differently than the OS(except for OS X, strangely). This isn't anything new.

Continuing to sell the 16 gb at this point is just criminal

Maybe the people that continue to buy the 16GB option should be to blame?

Or, another option would be, the 16GB meets the needs of some people who don't need storage capability
Some use the Cloud and don't store things locally
Some don't care about photos or music
Some use it corporately and only need the phone/email/calendar

There is obviously a use case for the 16GB or people wouldn't buy it and use it

I have unlimited data on Verizon, so I store all my music, pictures, and videos in the cloud. I'm not a huge app person so I can easily make do with 16GB.

-5.58? The OS shouldn't be taking up nearly that much space. That's about 2GB too high. You should have around 12GiB available on a 16GB iPhone.

Plus, your math is a tad off. 14.9 - 5.58 = 9.32
Sorry! I thought it was 4.58GB, but just to be sure, let's do the maths again

64GB: 64,000,000,000 / (1024*1024*1024) = 59.6GB

My 64GB SE shows 55.7GB capacity, so 59.6 - 55.7 = 3.9GB (OS)

So the 16GB would be: 16,000,000,000 / (1024*1024*1024) = 14.9

14.9 - 3.9 = 11GB on the nose. Does anyone have a fresh 16GB SE to confirm?

Well, about 1.5GB too high then. That should check out. I was basing it off my 16GB 5s, which had close to 12GB available last time I checked.

Yeah 11-12GB give or take. Not a lot of room but I also know a lot of people that just want an iPhone for basic web browsing, streaming music and a few photos so it suits them. Obviously, starting off at 32GB would be best but it is, what it is.

I was expecting about 4-5GB not 9GB for system etc. If the system size is the same on the 16GB then I am really really happy about opting for the 64.
Which is why 16 GB phones need to stop being an option. 16 GB is for very minimal use.

But this minimal use does have a market. Some out there don't really use an iphone to its fullest. Nor desire to. Ever.

We have issued company iphones to clients who'd rather not have it. they would prefer a nice simple flip phone if asked (some have outright asked for them tbh). They just want a phone. Some rather not have a phone at all lol. issued a work phone responsible to answer it in a timely manner.

But to these minimal users we give 32 and 64 gb phones that are a waste of money. I'd rather we had a few 16's to save a few bucks for these people.

Other personal users I know...its a phone and IM and web mail checker device really, maybe does Skype/facetime stuff maybe and that's about it. No army of pics/vids. Or they backup and clear out as needed.

A person who wants bare bones gets that. And nicely priced. And apple has the lure to setup 32 or 64 sales (its just a few dollars more..c'mon, you know you want to lol). Some users win, apple wins.

That market is dwindling as the size of apps and media are increasing. The iPhone can shoot 4K video now ... and the quality of both photos and videos are increasing, not decreasing. 16 GB now is a LOT less space for iOS than it was a couple years ago ... and it will continue to worsen. Most people buy a 16 GB iPhone because it's cheaper without any knowledge of the storage size ... only to be later surprised when they get low storage warnings on their phone after using them for a bit. The cloud is not a solution for this as you can't run apps from the cloud and people have limited data plans and/or crappy data speeds depending on the area they are in.

And those people wouldn't be purchasing a 700 dollar phone.

Or get them flip phones like you just suggested.

And 16 GB is perfect for people that do almost nothing with their phones.

In what world is it nicely priced? The base model is 650 bucks before tax. The SE is the only phone where the price actually makes any logical sense for a 16 GB phone.

To be honest I am leery of iphones at even 64gb support for 4k. This really should be done on dedicated systems. IE...vdslr/vmirrorless or video cam. 4k can see file size shoot up. Having not seen the menu options not sure how much control to drop the quality for better file size. Even baseline 4k on data scales I have seen has it pulling in what I get doing regular video with Pro Res 422. 40-50gb an hour. this shooting 1024, 24-30 fps.

Which leads to catch 22 of drop the quality...and the vid can look worse for it. 4k can't correct for that..it will just be more colorful bad footage. Still bad footage. Post processing may not help either. Not saying this as an expert. Noob myself to video. Name a mistake and I have made it or have not made yet but probably will in time lol.

Dedicated systems you get memory options. SD card size to taste/need, in my case I run an external recorder with SSD's in sleds to change out.
