no really, we love all contributions.

And I love all contributions for me! Next time when you set up F@H type under name "Dreadnought", team "3446" :D For all my loyal subject, I will reward you! (don't know how, or when, probably never, but that is besides the point of becoming my loyal subject!)

i added my mom's 1.8Ghz p4, and my work 2.0 ghz p4 and they're both cranking out the gromacs (8-15 min/step when im not working).

You people at the top 200, watch out.. you're all in my sights. :D
(as long as the admin doesn't catch me not signing off for weekend backups.)

Glad to hear that you've added another machine. How many times has she asked why her machine has slowed down so far?

I guess those weekend backups aren't worth it, unless something happens to your machine and you lose your data. Be safe. The points will come.

actually, my dad just plays Solitare, and she types up stuff and plays solitare, so they haven't really noticed any slow down..

and my dept has our own backups on the server, and the server gets backed up daily.. so im good :)

Well, I'm glad there are backups. I just want everyone to be safe. I'd hate to see someone get hurt by folding because not only is it a pain to put things back together but people might say bad about folding too.

Finally got my P4 2.0 @work folding. Couldn't get it to work at first because of the firewall blocking the assignment servers... Know I have formatted my G3, put first classic on it, then os X and also installed virtual pc. Know I get the WU's through virtual pc, email the workfolder and the queue.dat file to my pc@work and that is crunching 24/7!! I know, it's a bit of work, but got my first Stinker and that is a 249 pointer! So probably this will give me at least about 50 points per day more.

on the contrary, it's pretty ingenious.....have you figured out how to automate the process?

Yep, ask a systemadministrator to open the firewall for the assignment and upload servers! :D First I wanna see if it has problems sending the results to Stanford. I that goes without any problems, I'll ask the IT department to open the assignment servers in the firewall. When I asked about it they said that they didn't have any problem for people to use their pc for folding, but they also didn't want to inspect it any further why I couldn't get through the firewall. Know, with some help from the board here, I know the firewall has blocked the addresses of the assignment servers. Probably the addresses to send in the results are also blocked. I know more after the weekend.

I just found my dual 2.0GHZ G5 had the OS upgraded, so thats why my production over the last 2 weeks dropped to 500 a week instead of 2000! I am getting it installed now and I have another dual 1.8GHZ machine my dad ordered coming in soon, it keeps getting delayed by apple... come on apple...

I finished my first WU (a gromacs) about 1.5 weeks ago. I am still working on my second one (a tinker). I would say my beige g3 is chopping through these things pretty well. it is taking me just a little over an hour to get .25% (1 frame) of it done. Im just about a 50% right now...hoping to get it all done pretty soon :).

Theoretically i could get it done in 17 days...but it will probly be more like 20-24.

At least the beige g3's....which have cruddy hardware parts (you can tell it was made when the migration from oldworld to newworld roms was going on)...has excellent cooling. My 500 mhz sonnet g3 proc in it is doing pretty well...actually i just opened it up and touched the heatsink and it is not "burning" hot which is a good thing :). pretty soon i am getting an emac however. Have any of you guys experienced any problems with emacs and the constant 100% cpu power? Last thing i need is an overheating proccessor causing the vaccume tube to explode

I just added a another as well.

I just got a dual 2.0 G5. It is folding for the effort. It has allowed me to be in the top 50 producers of the team!!! Much faster than my little 'ol iBook G3 600Mhz. (which is still folding by the way 24/7 propped up next to the A/C Vent :) )

After just under a week (think I started on Tuesday of last week) I have gotten to 3 WU and a score of 305 on a PC P4-2.2 that doesn't see much action any more.

Now for a question or two (maybe more). I have my partners (Teddy) PC that sits idle; can I add it using the same name that I am currently using? And is there any limit to the number of computers that I can have under my name?

The other question is about folding with my PB 12" rev. B. My operating temp (by Konfaulator Temperature Text) is generally about 125 to 130 degrees. I do plan on getting Applecare, so I expect to get at least three years out of the PB, though I would hope that I can see a total of 5 years. I would love to run the PB at night. Will I be doing more harm to my PB running it 24/7?

Also with my PB, how are points done when you start and stop? For if I do run overnight it will be for 5 to 8 hours. And not always, since I run DVD burns just before hitting bed. For what I was thinking was to run the stand alone folding program when I could.

Thanks for bearing with me. Glad to finally be part of the team.

Good for you!

Yes you can use his pc under your own name, you can add as much computers as you like under your own name! Don't forget to add every pc you got at work!

Folding on a laptop isn't recommended, because of heat problems. A laptop can't get rid of its heat as easy as a desktop. To keep a laptop cool there are special platform that let air go under it.

There is no problem here. Just finish a WU within the timeframe (mostly this is more then 20-30 days. Have you thought about the folding app of mc68k on your PB (in the FAQ section there is a link to it)? This will fold when only on idle cpu time. So it will be folding day and night, but only when the cpu isn't used for the full 100%. Next to that you can make it so that only (let's say) 50%, or any number, of your cpu idle power is for folding (if you get heat problems, lower the cpu intensity used for folding)

You're welcome and glad to have you!!

Hi Chip, welcome to the team.
You can use unlimited computers under the same username, as long as you own them or have permission to use them for folding.

Keep folding

Well I installed F@H on two more machines this weekend at my parents... a 1.8 G5 and some flavor of Intel. I couldn't get the F@H graphical client working on my work PC for some reason but the console client works like a charm. Yay! Now my procuction will be up a decent amount.... until I get my Dual 2.5 (or more)... then I'll hit the top 100 in no time... right now I'm slated for top 100 in a little over a years times...

With a dual 1.8 you will hit the top 100 soon! I know, I did it. Reaching the top50 after that took me twice as long! So, don't worry too much and enjoy catching up and overtaking!!

I wish I had a dual-CPU machine...
However, I'll have all of you trumped in 2007, when I buy my next Mac, if Mac OS Rumors' report on upcoming Macs is accurate...

If you're using the graphical clients on the macs, you might want to consider the console ones, which are a lot faster.
and I used mc68k scripts to install, so they run automatically in background (see the FAQs)

I recently switched my clients from graphical to console myself. I also used the mc68k scripts on my Mac, and used a Folding@Home FAQ I found on Google for setting up the Windows client.

Update: I've revised my prediction for passing 10,000 points. At the rate I'm going, I should be there by late July or early August 2004. I had 7499 points as of when I posted this (check my signature for the latest stats).

Well, I had a catastrophe last night and my dual G4/800 is done with folding (and other things) for the moment. :(
