Keep in mind though that applecare + doesn't cover lost/stolen. So if you think you might be prone to loss or theft, you may consider something like squaretrade. I don't have any experience with squaretrade but I read good things.

I DO have experience with Asurion. My (android) phone was having problems and they sent me a replacement with more problems. I sent the replacement back and re-flashed my android phone.

then i guess apple's website is wrong along with the executive relations people i have spoken too

How to get AppleCare+

Add it to your shopping cart during the checkout process when you purchase your new iPhone.
Buy it within 30 days of your iPhone purchase at Apple Retail (requires a Genius Bar appointment, inspection of the iPhone & proof of purchase). Your iPhone purchase date is the date we ship and charge you for your order.

I can add that I put the AppleCare + warranty on my 4s prior to delivery/activation. In fact, it had been a couple of weeks and they still let me do it. With my wifes iPad, they let me add applecare + to it over the phone and even retroactively changed my purchase date to the actual delivery date so that I was within the allotted timeframe.

for what it's worth...

One key difference is that VZW's plan includes coverage for lost phones, whereas Applecare + does not. It is a significant premium for that coverage, but with full retail being $650, I'm purchasing it.

If my phone breaks or I have issues, I could always "lose" it and get another (less cost of deductible of course) phone.

quoted from another user...I just did it and it now shows I have applecare+ on my order

"I did it to both of my iPhone orders. Just call 1-800-676-2775 and have them connect you to the online order team. It's possible for the online team to do it and not the service person."

i was able to add it to my 4s last year after the fact as well but from the way it sounded with the executive relations person i spoke with during my purchase of the 4S and a few weeks ago said that they are going to be more strict about the process this time around. I'd be perfectly happy if i didnt have to go to an apple store to get applecare+. Just stating the information ive been given by apple

Yeah, it sorta makes sense for those who fear loss/theft. Have you checked into squaretrade just to compare?

Personally, I always have a line on my account eligible for an upgrade. I think that's "loss/theft" insurance enough for me.

A few more points in regards to applecare+ vs Asurion:

-- As mentioned, my last asurion replacement was junk. I had a friend who had their android phone replaced 5x under asurion and each one had a different MAJOR issue. Verizon finally gave her a different model out of a new box as they verified each one had a bad problem.
-- AppleCare+ replaces your phone with either a brand new one or a refurb one (you'll get mixed answers when searching out this info). Best case of the two, it's brand new. Worst case, it's a refurb, overseen by Apple. I would prefer the manufacturer provide me a refurbished unit if this is the case.
-- As stated in this thread previously, no lag time between devices. You go to apple store, they swap it out for you. You're done. With Asurion, they ship you a new device so you have to wait for that (if your phone is unusable, you have to figure something out). They then give you about 4 minutes after you receive the package to send your old one back. They will charge your account for the full cost of a brand new device and it will sit in pending until they receive your old (presumabely broken) phone.
-- Applecare +, you get 2 "accidental" damage claims at $50 each. Asurion, you get two claims in two years (or whatever the website said) at $160 each.

That's ummm.... Insurance fraud, and potentially due to the value a felony. Not worth 500 bucks saved, to me at least. That is bonkers.

I actually got an email from Apple Sales Support the day after I ordered

"Thank you for your recent iPhone 5 purchase at the Apple Store.

We would like to let you know that every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a $49 service fee.

We noticed you weren't given the opportunity to add AppleCare+ to your iPhone. If you would like to extend your coverage for only $99, please reply to this email by September 21st.

After that date, if you would still like to purchase AppleCare+ within the first thirty days of receiving your iPhone, you can call AppleCare at 800-MY-IPHONE or visit an Apple Retail Store.

Thank you for shopping with Apple.

Sincerely,

Apple Online Store Team"

I wish they would just come out and tell us what the deal is... if they get X number of calls asking the same question, you'd think they'd put out an article or something that would describe the circumstances this time around rather than making people wait and guess...

I think they would be silly to not allow phone-in purchase of the warranty because: One, it would force people to look elsewhere for the warranty (like Verizon or Squaretrade) which would lose them a lot of revenue, and two, I can't imagine that a new device is going to be broken that quickly. Sure, someone could take it out of the box and drop it immediately but who cares? In the long run, Apple still comes out ahead. Heck, my buddy sat in line to get the first iphone and proceeded to drop it a few days later. He went back in and they gave him a brand new one. I understand that was a while ago and things have changed but it's worth noting that they at least did this at some point in time. I doubt there will be more instances of people trying to "game the system" by buying a warranty for their broken phone when all iPhone 5's will be brand new as of 9/21. I think they would end up losing more revenue by not allowing call-in warranty purchases... but we'll see.

I will say, on the flipside, it would be a great way to generate more traffic in the retail stores should they make you see a "genius" to purchase a warranty. More people in store = more chance to sell them more stuff = more revenue. I'm sure the market research people that work for or at Apple know the best way to proceed (phone-in or force in-store warranty purchase) in order to maximize profits.

yeah, it seems like a hit or miss whether or not you got that email. I ordered through the app and did not get it.

Not to mention I'm sure Verizon will blacklist the "lost" phone so it can never be activated again. lol

With that plan, viajy will have paid $10 * X months + $160 deductible for an iPod touch (old "lost" iphone that presumabely can not be activated again) and will get a refurb phone from Asurion that I can almost assure you will become an ipod touch (or less) within a certain amount of time. All the while risking insurance fraud.

May want to re-think that plan.

OK, Might as well throw my official answer from applecare into the mix here:

Just called and spoke to Jessica. She told me that while they do require you to go into a store to purchase the warranty so a genius can inspect your device, they do make exceptions to this rule. She mentioned (twice) that if you live more than 50 miles from a store, they can use that "reason/excuse" to allow the purchase of the warranty over the phone. She did mention having to call in and escalate to some other team and bla bla bla. Now that I think about it... I think I had to do that for the iPad but it was pretty seamless and everyone was really nice.

The closest store to me is ~70 miles away.

We'll see how right she is...

as I posted earlier, you can call 1-800-676-2775 and have them connect you to the online order team, and they will add it now since you do not have your phone yet.

Not sure who's upvoting this...

Please be sure to read the first post of a thread before replying. It may render your reply invalid.

I didn't think AT&T or VZW blacklist iphones, which is why risk of theft is high.

VZW's plan does offer an "extended warranty", it covers the same things Applecare does pluse loss of phone. But the service isn't received from Apple.

I've never lost a phone but am worried about theft (and loss in my wife's case). Apple + is cheap relative to VZW but its the phone going missing that has me worried.

That and diminished battery life...

Is there a difference between AppleCare and AppleCare + now? I always would buy AppleCare before my 1 year warranty was up and use it to get a brand new phone right before the 2 year mark was up.

What are people's thoughts on getting AppleCare or AppleCare +?

The Applecare+ covers 2 accidental damage replacements. Dont buy anything but the Applecare+

ahh...thanks. The title was misleading, but you can never add applecare+ through the carriers

ha! I know (now). Tell that to the CSR for verizon. I have a screenshot of a chat I had with one of their reps that said I would definately be able to buy applecare + during the pre-order process. lol.

That is what they told me as well when I was just looking into the iPhone. Two Verizon reps said I could, then I asked them to call Apple, and Apple said "No", have to bring it in....

Later I called AppleCare Plus line and they said I could call after activation of the Verizon phone, so these answers were all over the map. Called again today and talked to another Apple Sales rep for AppleCare plus and not to the regular sales department and they repeated that we can call it in after the activation.

good to hear. seems like the common answer.

I called Apple about adding it but they said I wasn't able to until after I got the phone. Then I recieved this email:

I replied to the email but they still haven't added it to my order.

EDIT: They have now replied saying it has been added to my order. It's not showing up online yet but I'm sure it will within a couple days.

This. I called the first time and spoke to someone about adding it and they said no. Called back and got someone to help with an online order and they processed it within 30 seconds. It is now showing in my online orders now.

Ordered 4:03AM EST 9/14 due to a crappy, slow, frustrating checkout experience so have a 10/5 delivery date, but I called Apple Friday evening and they added Applecare+ no problem, since it was impossible during checkout to do it.

Ordered my wife an iPhone 5 on Saturday 9/15 without AT&T upgrade pricing (ouch!) and then later decided we should add Applecare+ to this one too (more ouch). I wasn't able to call back until Sunday afternoon, but had no problem adding it then either.

If it hasn't shipped, AppleCare+ is easy as heck to add.

State Farm used to offer iPhone insurance for $40/year here. Several of my neighbors had it, though I didn't add it to my iPhone. These neighbors (some no longer in the neighborhood) 'lost' their iPhones. One of them filed a legit damaged claim once on a shattered screen (got $399) and then filed a 'lost' claim later on his wife's phone (that she didn't lose) and got $699 and then used an available upgrade on their account to get her a new 3GS and pocketed the rest of the claim. Another neighbor legit lost her iPhone in the grocery store and easily got the $699. Of course I recently tried to get State Farm and was told they discontinued new policies a year ago because of a large contingent of abuse. Yeah.. everyone I knew having a policy invoked it.
Applecare is the next best option
