So.. is there anyone who knows exactly if I am still eligible to add AppleCare+ or not?

And assuming I am eligible, does it truly require a visit to the Apple Store and a Genius inspection? Or can I simply call and have it added? (I'll know the answer shortly as I am on hold with AppleCare, but wanted to check if anyone has any experience with this this year)

EDIT - Got my answer in case anyone cares, according to the rep I spoke with I have to in fact make a trip to the Apple Store and have the iPhone inspected.

Definitely an annoying process and insanely more difficult than simply adding regular AppleCare at the end of your first year of ownership. Apple doesn't even offer standard AppleCare anymore correct?

How to get AppleCare+

Add it to your shopping cart during the checkout process when you purchase your new iPhone.
Buy it within 30 days of your iPhone purchase at Apple Retail (requires inspection of the iPhone & proof of purchase). Your iPhone purchase date is the date we ship and charge you for your order.

Also states this as well......

If during the Plan Term, you submit a valid claim by notifying Apple that (i)a defect in materials and workmanship has arisen in the Covered iPhone" If its damaged at time of manufacturing, than it a defect in my opinion by the manufacture and should be covered which it is by the many that have had it replaced now. But later (Much Later), if not mentioned by the customer, than I would think not..

You can get AppleCare+ over the phone. I was told you could do so even if it is scuffed. They recommend reporting the scuff to them so you have a reference case number.

Over the phone is supposed to only work if you live > 50 miles from an Apple Store (they checked when I called)

That's not what I was told here in Canada. They insisted that I could do it anytime over the phone and did not mention the Apple Store that isn't too far from me. I even mentioned that I may drop into the store to do it, they reply that I don't have to bother and could just use my credit card over the phone instead.

I'd agree with that to a point.

If you unbox your phone and it is already scuffed and scratched, then that is a clearly a defect that should be covered (would also probably be covered by the standard warranty).

But scuffs that come after unboxing? I'd say that is not a defect.

Tiny scuffs don't matter. When the Genius checks it out, if it isn't physically damaged (meaning obviously broken)....they just check the water sensors to see if there is water damage. They might swipe through a few screens to make sure things work. That's what they did with mine this weekend.

No, Apple will not cover cosmetic damage as a replacement. But that doesn't mean that you can't start being "no so careful" with your phone. We are all human....if we don't baby it....something is bound to happen.

I don't know what's worse... the guy obsessing about scuffing his anondized aluminum, or the guy telling people to willfully damage their phones in order to invoke the replacement clause in AppleCare+.

Wow.

14 day return policy.. Out of box damage or functionality issues shouldn't be relevant to an Apple Care + discussion.

I have a really basic question, but I never had applecare+ and am curious.

So it does say that it doesn't cover cosmetic damage. What if the phone is dropped and there is a big crack or cracks in the screen, but the touch screen itself still works and the phone still functions? That would be purely cosmetic, but would it qualify for an exchange through applecare+?

As far as I know that's not really cosmetic.....sure the device works, but you have large cracks in the screen. I'm sure you wouldn't have any issue getting it either replaced or fixed for something like that.

I say fixed just because with the iPhone 4 the front was much harder to replace. Now with the iPhone 5, the whole phone is opened from the front.....I'm guessing this would allow Apple to start replacing just the front screens for large cracks.

If you drop your iPhone....just make sure it's dropped on something hard....and in water :p

I can confirm that you can get AppleCare+ for your phones by calling the AppleCare number. I just did it and I live in San Francisco.

One thing I have learned is when it comes to customer service Apple is usually one of the best. I had AppleCare on my macbook and starting having issues with hard drives crashing. It happened three times in six months. First two times they just swapped the drive out, on the third time they handed my a brand new macbook right off the shelf (my old one was a year and a half old at the time). I also know people that have gotten iPhones with scratched up displays replaced under AppleCare + for the $49 fee.

For the most part, at least at my local store the Genius Bar is pretty liberal when it comes to replacements and keeping customers happy, especially if you have AppleCare. Of course YMMV.

Was your iPhone delivered Friday or after?

I'm willing to try this again as I was denied today at an Apple Retail store. I had an appointment to fix my 4S broken speakerphone and after waiting 45 minutes after my scheduled time, I asked if I could have the inspection done to add AppleCare+ to my 5 on the same appointment and I was told no, I have to make a new appointment for this.

I'd like to get this done over the phone as my local Apple Store is full of arrogant employees, however Apple seems to be giving me the run-around.

That's BS. I took mine in and the inspection took all of about one minute for him to shine a light in the lightning port and sim card slot and push a few buttons. Sounds like a lazy genius to me.

If it is a minor scuff(without damage) with AppleCare+, you probably could use the automated advance exchange option. Just choose you cannot hear phone calls and keep pressing no to every IVR option and ask for a replacement. Once you have the replacement, send your old one back. You don't need to deal with any Genius. This is a simple warranty claim, and not a damage claim, so no $49 deductible.

Apple is no dummy. I cannot help but think they are smarter than this.

As long as Apple has been in business they've had every game in town run on them.

Perhaps after one "thinks" they've completed the transaction, they are charged back in the amount of $49.00.

Oh I agree, I definitely am not blaming Apple at all here. The issue is with my specific local Apple Store and the employees there, I've had some wonderful experiences with Geniuses when I lived elsewhere.

This is exactly why I wish I could do it over the phone.

A lazy Genius.....becoming all too common lately.

My store (and several online reports) told me that most "blueshirt" employees in the Apple store can do this. In fact I had an appointment for mine, but they passed me off to a salesperson....no doubt to free up the genius. In the end the Genius had to do it because the system wasn't accepting the serial numbers.

My phone came friday, i was able to add Applecare+ over the phone Saturday, no issues. CC charged, no need to bring the phone in to anyone. So calling seems to work!

We are talking about a minor scuff, not willful damage. They already exchanged thousands with this design/manufacturing defect for free. Unless they give free cases all IP5 owners, this is going to be ongoing problem until 5s/6.

When the total phone costs only $199 for material + $8 labor, they can afford to replace any phone which is not willfully damaged.

If they are in business, it is not up to the customers to do them a favor.
