Apple's cheapest product, the iPod Shuffle is also aluminium.
Somebody tell me why they'll use some ugly plastic for an iPhone???

You seem to have forgotten about the iPhone 3G and the 3GS being plastic, even the original iPhone had plastic on it and in my opinion these new cases or shells look way better than those did.

Blue please, still, I wouldn't trade my black beauty (iPhone 5) for this. Why on earth did Apple go with a glossy finish though? It's horrible. Matte is clearly better - HTC style. Enhanced grip and all.

Could be that the new iPhone finally has a removable battery, and that these are replacement backs that act as stylish bumpers at the same time.

I thought that too? The form of these back covers reminds me a lot of the Palm Pixi back covers, which were changeable (though a huge pain in the ass to remove), with the battery underneath.

It would be super un-Apple like to do though, so I highly doubt it. But wishful thinking...

No why would you think that? It looks exactly like a flatter iPhone 3G..

Can anyone explain what happens to the iPhone 4S once the 5S and the budget iPhone comes out presumably for $300-349? Carriers subsidize $449 for the 4 right now and will do the same for 4S, yet the budget iPhone will be cheaper and better (w/ 4 inch retina). And I don't see Apple taking $100 hit here, nor do I see budget iPhone being $449 because that just beats the whole purpose of budget?

Any reasonable explanation?

iPhone 4S will be discontinued

Because the iPhone 3G had that thick chrome trim, this doesn't. The color goes right up the plane of the screen, and even seems to hug it somewhat. That's closer to the Pixi I think. Also, those colors are almost the same.

Apple's lineup after the fall media event will be the following.

All devices with lightning connector and iOS 7. All features of iOS 7 will be allowed on these new devices. Except no camera filtering on A5 devices.

iPod Touch (Will have no major updates) - all with 4inch display:

16gb - ($199 or $229) - A5 - no back camera - no colors - 512MB RAM

32gb/64gb - $299/$399 - A5- colors - 512MB RAM

iPhone (all with 4inch retina display and all with LTE) -

Plastic iPhone - 16gb - ($300-$350) - A5 - 512MB RAM - colors - cheap back camera

iPhone 5 - 16gb - $550 - A6 - 1GB RAM - black/white - 8MP back camera

New iPhone -32gb/64gb/128gb - $650/$750/$850 - A7? (Quad-core) - 1GB - black/white - 13MP back camera - dual LED FLash - same form factor

So the US iphone contract priicing will be: $0, $99, $199/$299/$399

iPads:

iPad Mini - no retina sorry

16gb/32gb/64gb - $299/$399/$499 - with cellular ($429/529/629) - A6 - 512MB RAM - 5 or 8 MP back camera - little thinner and lighter

iPad 2 discontinued

Full sized retina iPad - new form factor duh - same retina display

32gb/64gb/128gb - $499/$599/$699 - with cellular ($629/$729/$829) - A7X - 1GB RAM - 8 or 13 MP back camera - weigh about 1 pound

This is what it is going to be folks, whether you like it or not.
Any questions?

Actually I think A5 will be discontinued.
It will be A6 across the board with A7 for flagship products. That's one of the reasons for going with plastic and cheap camera because it brings the cost down enough that they can put better internal components.

Maybe more like HTC's First.

Didn't the iPhone 3G and 3GS win a few design awards and get high customer satisfaction ratings?

The 3G certainly looked a ton better than most contemporaneous Palm (Treos were metal), Windows Mobile, and BB devices.

Plastic.

They don't want you to. This phone would be for people who can't afford a new iPhone 5. Not you, since you can.

I could see Apple taking 4S/5 guts and putting it into these plastic cases to make a "cheaper" iPhone... And the 6 being the premium glass/aluminum model.

Why do people with absolutely no clue about anything apple is doing post things as if they are fact?

I still don't get why there is no FCC stuff on there.

I these were somehow removable backs like a previous poster speculated, could the FCC info be on a sticker inside the phone rather than on the exterior? These don't seem to be interchangeable covers though....haven't the inside pictures shown screw anchor points? If it was removable, the guts of the phone would have to be somehow fixed to the display rather than to the back shell.

I think A5 will be the lowest in food chain, mainly for this and iPod

Remember, iPad mini has an A5 too

iPhone 4S will be discontinued

So are you saying the Budget iPhone will replace the 4S? The 4S as it stands right now will replace the iPhone 4, which costs $450 off contract. So if Apple does not release budget iPhone the 4S would cost $450. So are you saying the budget iPhone will cost $450? I think 99% of people can agree that the budget iPhone will cost much less than $450 (probably $300-$350). So how could a $350 product replace $450 product?

Apple isn't going to say, hey carriers, you guys are subsidizing our entry level products too much, we don't want $450, here take back a $100. My question here is what will replace the 4S since it will be discontinued because the budget iPhone is superior (to the 4S) and cheaper (because of 4 inch retina + a likely A6 Chip + LTE).

The only thing that makes sense to me is dropping the iPhone 5 to $0 on contract ($450 without), and releasing the 5S for a NEW low price of $99 on contract? What do you guys think? Any other way Apple can pitch this?

Can someone explain to me how just a plastic case is making this loads cheaper? What else will it be missing in order to make it a budget alternative?

A moulded plastic case is much much cheaper to produce than a machined aluminium case. The aluminium then has to be Anodised and dyed after machining, both these processes will require greater quality control than an injection moulded plastic item. The glass panels in the back of the iPhone 5 are made to very exact tolerances, this will also add to the cost.

The plastic phone will probably have a single flash and lower quality cameras to keep the cost down.

I imagine it will also have plastic buttons and probably not ship with a set of earbuds!

The lack of black rear panel is probably what disturbs me the most. After seeing all these photos I'm really worried this iPhone is going to be even worse than 5th gen iPod.

The 3G and 3GS had a plastic back. Were they ugly? I think not. This is a great step to adding some hardware variety. I'll be buying this over the 5/5S any day.

You don't think that this phone is, in fact, a decoy made by Apple?

I mean, I love the Nokia Lumia look with bright colours and personalisation.. but there wasn't half as many concrete leaks regarding the iPhone 5.
