I recently have stopped being a total idiot using the version of AIM for Mac, and I have switched to Adium. I tried iChat, but it didn't quite do it for me... Adium seems less confusing and just sort of more... quiet. (which makes absolutely no sense b/c that duck quacks whenever somethign happens...). I have wondered if anyone knew of an application better than Adium though that would be good for Mac??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreiciated.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

i alternate between using both but right now i like using ichat more.

overall if i had to only use one i'd use adium, but since i can use both and have that choice, i switch off between the two :)

As nobody I know uses AIM I use Adium as my Messenger client. It's good, seems pretty stable, uses the OS X built-in spell check and I have replaced that damned duck with some decent sounds and a much nicer Application icon.

I've been using Adium for a couple of months now and have pretty much abandon iChat for the time being.

I've been using Adium because of it's tabbed IM format and it's ability to tune into lots of different IM protocols.

If I was going to be using audio and/or video chats I would go back to iChat.

In my opinion, iChat. I just like the interface, it goes with the rest of the Apple apps nicely. One downside to iChat though is no tabbed messaging....Hopefully in Leopard

Try iChat for a while longer. I didn't like it at first, but now I love it.

Once you have set up Adium it's a real pleasure.

Simple/easy interface and integrated spell checking.

By the way, I love that duck!

I loved iChat for all the reasons you do...

But Adium can be styled to look and even SOUND like iChat. And you get all the added features of Adium(tabbed windows, multiple clients, etc)

It's only missing video/audi chat(I still use iChat for this) and the "Current Song Playing in iTunes" away message thing.

:)

I rather find that with expose much of the need for tabbed windows goes away. I just let my im windows be all over the place lol and then bam! expose it and i can see then all lined up nice and neatly. Expose has done wonders for for messaging applications imo. I go crazy with out when i am using aim on pc's.

I always use Adium since I found it last fall. iChat is okay and I use it for video chat, but if you want IM to take up the smallest space, use Adium. I love it and reccomend it to my friends who use Macs. I love all the great freeware for the Mac.

i use adium, and i find that it integrates well into my system....its not constantly in your face like other clients, it keeps out of the way. ive styled it to look a bit like iPhoto edit tool boxes, and ive changed the icon to an AIM man, which flashes orange when someone messages me. i have done this because no one knows what the duck means, and this symbol is recognised easily. i have kept the iChat soundset, as it is also non-obtrusive.

very good IMO, but file transfers between my mac and my PC using friends over a 10MBPS connection are woefully slow for no apparent reason. can anyone explain this phenomenon?

I'm using Adium as all of my contacts use MSN. Really really like it (though I think the menu bar icon looks a bit rubbish).

oh yeah and file xfers almost never work for me on adium.

exactly. and untill that is addressed, it is iChat for me. I used Adium for a while and loved it, but a little ways back I switched back to iChat and have been very pleased. Seems a bit more natural for me. Not exactly sure why.

I am pretty sure it is down to the fact it is bulit on Gaim. The developers are well aware of the problem with file transfers but at the moment they cannot do anything

Another vote for Adium. No one I know know uses AIM, they're all on Messenger. Adium looks good and is very customisable.

true. Adium gets my vote also. Very cooool program imho

Haha, well in Adium just put

Now listening to %_artist - %_track or whatever to get that same functionality you sillies.

Adium - Edit - Insert Script (to see more)

I wish I could get my friends who have my e-mail address to stop sending me files over IM. It's really irritating. I'd much rather they just shoot me an e-mail. Ugh. Even on PCs I don't much care for it. :(

But I do understand that people other than me like it....

You don't like the duck?

They should send police around to your house to smash your mac for being such an unappreciative user.

You must love the duck... love the duck...

Haha. I'd so dearly miss the duck if I stopped using Adium. :(
I think the quacking gets on the nerves of those around me though... :p

I don't care for the regular duck icons but the Vector Duck Icons are pretty awesome.
