Adium by far. iChat interface is just too bloated. I like Adium for the ability to customize everything.

adium for sure. every so often i get bored of looking at the same thing, so i change my wallpaper/colors, and when i do this, i always also customize adium to fit in with the design.

file transfers tick me off every once in a while, but i hardly use 'em (mostly i would just be transferring betwen computers, and i just use my network for that), and whenever i need to use isight, i just open ichat for that session.

the only peeve i have is that you can't completely turn the opacity to 0%, and when you start heading to lower numbers at all, the text gets really hard to read unless you spend some serious time finagling it.

There's an article in the current issue of Macworld, with extensive reviews of instant messaging programs for the mac.

I use Fire most of the time

Most of the time I use an open source application, Fire, available from: their sourceforge project page.

I like it far better than ichat and Adium. My contacts are evenly distributed across yahoo, MSN, AIM, and Google Talk so this is the client I use when I need multiple services logged in at once. Fire also supports tabbed browsing just like Adium and different "themes" for chat window appearence, etc... From personal experience (no guarantees you'll experience the same), I find that Fire uses fewer system resources than Adium.

I adivse you to also look at OpenSourceMac for a simple listing of cool open source mac apps just for fun...

Cheers!

macOSX-tastic,

How did you go about changing the dock icon? I like your AIM icon a lot more than the duck. (I realize you posted your message in Febuary...)

And some various questions for anyone:

How do you change the font on your away message and profile? I like to change them up a bit sometimes.

How do you add hyperlinks to your profile. I'm trying to create my profile from AIM.

Is there anyway to keep Adium or AIM running while the computer is sleeping. I like to keep myself signed on with an away message, but don't need any other function of the computer running. Right now I have the computer set to never sleep, but the screen saver comes on after 15 minutes.

I don't see this as either/or. I use both, and use them for different things. That said, I really couldn't do without Adium.

I prefer Adium, but when I have to transfer documents or items to or recieve documents or items from my brother, we always switch to iChat because of the stability in the transfer. I had Fire for a while, and I personally never really cared for it.

Steve

PS: If you are going to get Adium, make sure to get the SomethingAwful.com "smilies."

Metal Adium to the Rescue ;)

Although the site is down currently (should be back shortly), a friend and I have been doing builds of Adium called Metal Adium.

Basically we've taken the polished metal interface (save the sharp corners) found in current apps such as iTunes and iPhoto and given it to Adium.

It feels more like iChat, but works like Adium.

The download link will be borked for the next few days, but you might want to check it out when its back up. You can check a screen shot on Macupdate for now though...

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20912

Also, as others have said...in Adium 1.0 a lot of things will be fixed. The team is moving over most of the complex things within AIM (file transfer, direct connect, etc..) over to be handled by JOscar instead of libgaim. If you checkout the latest source from Adium's SVN setup, you can compile it and see for yourself the progress that JOscar has brought to all things AIM. It's going to be an exciting release.

i prefer adium, i only use ichat for video chatting. i love my hobbes icon!

I believe he is blue if you are away, yellow if active, and orange if there is an alert (like you have an unseen message).

So smart! I was just trying it while offline. Thanks!

Nobody in this thread has mentioned Proteus. Proteus is free, and even when it cost money I bought it rather than use Adium. Since then, Adium has gotten better, but the last time I used it for a few days I again switched back to Proteus. Proteus just has a nicer (default) interface.

ditto what mduser said - i used to use adium, which I liked. a couple of months ago, i tried proteus cause I heard it was free now and I love it. been using it ever since. both adium & proteus are much better than ichat for stand IMing - obvious video chat is a completely different thing (if you want to do that, ichat is the way to go).

I prefer iChat, because it flows with the OS, but i like Adium because of all its features and customizations.

I guess after all the Google SOC changes have been implemented and there's Auido chat and working file transfer I'll ditch iChat for good unless Apple gives me a good reason with 10.5 to continue to use both.

Even with Google's support, the Adium team is not particularly committed to a timeline for audio, are they? Don't get me wrong -- I adore Adium, and I respect the team gangsta'. I have just never heard them say publicly that AV is a priority to them. On the contrary I remember them saying it is not.

Audio support is being implemented within the SOC projects and it is timed for 1.2 to be implemented into Adium, so I suppose we'll have audio support rather sooner than later. Video is another thing though and for it to be really awesome iChat would have to support the protocol that googletalk uses for audio so you could talk to ALL Mac users.

this is gonna sound so stupid.... but how do i change my IM font/color in Adium? I tried changing it through preferences but all it did was change all of my buddies incoming fonts. And I tried changing it using the format menu on top but it's temporary- whenever I reopen Adium my font goes back to the default.
